It seems funny to me that someone has been hurt or killed by almost all the assassination targets right before Altair gets them (ex: Tamir stabs his blackmith to death, Garnier has the patients' legs broken, etc.) but this is the first time Altair shows any sign of sympathy for them. I guess his having to re-earn his rank has given him a new perspective on life and death.
