@tempxanga thank you kindly. i don't mind negative responses, though -- this is youtube, and anyone can say what they want. kind of like democracy -- we can elect whoever we want, even if they are as dumb as a hammer, as vicious as a hyena, or as corrupt as dick cheney. freedom of speech....
Hello, I emailed you about your spikes, I am a big guy and these tiny lil 6in spikes suck, I need something nice and big like you got, how do We go about ordering these I would like to purchase them this friday 8/26/11, you can email me @ DustinWorker@gmail.com
@purejpm i don't really wish to join the old farts who bitch about the "young people today" and their attention span, but if you watch the vid till the end (all 63 seconds of it) you will see that the last throw comes from 7 feet. if that is not enough, one of my other vids show throws from over 12 feet. if you feel that it's still too short a distance, why not make a video yourself, and show us all how it is done? also, who the hell is "gut" you refer to? never had one come after me...
@kalevraa i did watch the video all the way to the end and it must be the camera angle because it looks like you are throwing from about 5 paces away..... i dont know about you be 12 feet isn't that long. i also make throwing spikes but i throw them from atleast 5 yards otherwise its not worth the time. Trust me if i had a video camera i would tape me throwing hawks knives spikes and shurikens that i have made. and i meant to say guy not "gut" common typo
@purejpm well, some things got cleared up. i normally throw from 12' and up nowadays, with 26' being the longest -- that's the end of my driveway. i am unable to video anything over 12' due to camera angles. i never view the spikes as defense weapons of any sort, even though i practice martial arts, and am a former infantryman. "in the battlefield" you use an assault rifle. in civilian life, you use your hands. use a throwing knife on a human and you will get very, very nasty for you.
@kalevraa ... and i was not speaking in literal terms of self defence, the point of these weapons was to fight and kill. Using and practicing with these weapons in ways that would have proven usless on a battlefeild is a waste of time
@purejpm ... using a throwing knife in a battlefield is a near impossibility, a fantasy at best, a suicide at worst, certainly at anything over 15'. given the fact that soldiers tend to wear body armor and helmets, it is also a dangerous fantasy. why not admit that it is just a fun thing to do, like archery, say, and drop the macho bullshit? i admit freely that i am a better smith than knife thrower. and if you don't have a camera, ask a friend -- i'd love to see your throws.
@kalevraa i am not talking about a real battlefeild i am talking about WHY these weapons are used and How they are used and What ther were used for, practicing with them for other reasons is pointless... i do aree that they are fun but when i do it it is from atleast 15 feet, gotta love a challenge... and i am working on getting a camera
@purejpm what about archery, then? bows used to be the primary weapon of war in both europe and asia. now, it's just a fun thing to do. i promise you, when i shoot my bow, i don't imagine i am fighting the french: nor do i wear a helmet or carry a pike like the english archers used to. and my arrow points are neither broadhead nor bodkin shaped-- they are target points. otherwise i would be spending a whole lot of time pulling them out of the target... :)
how big is your target I'm going to get some wood and try to make me one I'm trying to to figure out how many 4x4 I need. I liked your website the class seem cool wish I could aford that I sure would go I live in alabama. I'm glad I met a good friend like you
@nightwalker2830 about 26" x 30" is about right. it will take you about two 4" x 4" to make a decent target. cut them to 4" or 5" length, clamping them tightly -- then you can take true measurement of the total target size, and make a frame. remember to have a solid plywood backing. gorilla glue is weatherproof, but it expands and will tear your target apart if the frame is not solid enough. you can also use carpenter's glue. i used welded steel frame, but wood will work, too.
@nightwalker2830 5" long pieces of 4''X4", glued together, inserted in a welded steel frame, with thick plywood backing. you can make a solid wood frame is welding is a problem -- i tend to make things out of steel, but wood will work just as well.
@LastRealSamurai will do. although i assume that when you say "i bought some" you DON"T mean spikes made by me, right? the spikes i make are about 11 inches long which, after experimenting a lot, i find to be a very good size. i will shoot and post a throwing video within a week or so. thanks for posting!
have you posted the details of the spikes yet i might of missed that love to get some i bought a cast iron anvil for $20 i hope it will be ok for forging i dont have alot of money for a really good one
@270Gmoney well, if you don't like it, why not post a video of yourself nailing the target from a decent distance? i am more than willing to learn from you. as i have pointed out in my previous posts, i am a better blacksmith than a knife thrower, and likely to remain so. maybe you can help me improve.
@nightwalker2830 i will have all the details out soon enough. this is not what i do for a living -- i mostly forge big architectural items like gates. but people seem to like the spikes, and they are fun, so why not? i will make a few small batches a year for those as want them. more details later. cheers!
@cyberjackcyberjack err... it IS kinda close, but seems even closer than it actually is, as it was shot sort of from behind, causing a great deal of foreshortening. for example, the target is actually quite a bit bigger that is looks. i started really close up, maybe 3' with the backward shot, and kept stepping back, finishing at around 9' -- still kinda close. next video, with entirely newly designed spikes, has shots from 12-15 feet. i am a better smith than a knife-thrower...
@CerealMunchkin you are right, these were thrown from a fairly close distance. a video featuring more long-distance shots and a new spike design coming up, probably next month...
thanks. however, i really just throw them for fun; there is no "self-defense" component to this activity whatsoever. i might as well have been tossing horseshoes. more videos to follow.
actually it looks like he's thowing with no spin ie quarter spin. i am learning to do this myself and it's difficult but once you get it down you can pretty much throw any knife from any distance and it's more accurate, powerful, and mobile then trying to spin throw
by the way... this is not a competition. i am sure that there are many people out there faster, better, and generally way cooler than i am, with much better hairdos and a taste in fine wines. i just like making knives and pikes, and then throwing them. i am a much better blacksmith than i am a knife-thrower. so i will be very happy to see a video of your 22ft throw, and will applaud your achievement.
indeed. however, perhaps knowing how nasty planting one shuriken in the butt of another can be, i will be encouraged to be more accurate. if i post no new videos, it will probably mean that i haven't been accurate enough, and ended with a spike through my head...
thank you for your kind remarks. basically, i am still trying to figure out an "ideal" spike size and wight distribution, and also to make it aesthetically pleasing. next video will probably have other spikes, and from a greater distance.
he sucks i can do that with a banana

thank you. my spikes get damaged sometimes, too, when they hit each other. it's easy enough to fix, though. we'll see what the next batch will do.

that's why it's best to only throw a few spikes or knives.
