Manned flights into orbit are worth the human effort. It is called exploration, a classic human survival trait. If it is cost effective meaning the most value per unit of expenditure, then cost is not a problem. Blowing up or disintegration of orbiters and the negligent homicide of crews, is not effective.

Even at that speed it would still take 4 years to reach the nearest outside star and many more years to reach an earth like planet. Then time dilation means time on earth has passed by much more. It is scientifically and practically impossible for us to go anywhere.

@DLPBurke Relativity is only good for comparing atleast 2 intertial frames of reference. A field may violate this law by being inside 1 frame, and a sufficiently short period of time under the Plank Time may violate this law no matter how many frames.

Writers of Science Fiction knew more than half a century ago that payload and crew would be carried to LEO by two different kinds of rockets. Additionally, different rockets should be used to reach LEO than those used to transfer from LEO to elsewhere in the solar system. For the latter plasma rockets look promising thanks to their high specific impulse Hopefully, with constellation program, NASA will get back on track.
