  • i just dont understand how it works because the wind always changes, ok duh thats how it works it changes the position of the keel with the vane but how to you set the course?

  • You set the course first. Then you activate the vane to steer that course. It can't change course; it only changes the heading relative to the wind. A big wind shift can set you way off course. Many boats have been lost because the vane steered the yacht onto a reef after a wind shift while the captain slept.

  • @newpage123 In the open ocean the winds are steadier in force and direction than coastal winds. This is how these are usually used, but they could be used in finickier winds with more attenton.
