this piece is incredibly beautiful, bravo maestro, bravo orchestra, Stravisnky would be really proud of you (I bet he is jumping with joy in his grave). :D
It's interesting. This is the only recording I have ever heard where the triangle holds through the grand pause at the end. Does anyone know what thats all about? Artistic decision? Mistake?
i don't know if it's the recording quality or what, but the strings are so much clearer here than they are in any other recording of this piece that i've heard.
@TheKevinV08. I think you don' t have the right to speak about that... If you become such a good conductor we will talk further.. Its ridicoulous what you' re saying... Look at the finishing chord, he has everything so perfectly under control, at such a difficult point in the piece.... So don' t talk messy like that...
@bbassjee My apologies bbassjee, But I believe you interpreted the comment wrong. And I should have also made myself clearer when commenting. I meant to add that it was a really creative cue. In reality, I admire this conductor, his expression, his demeanor, his creativity in conducting. This was the first video that really got me into the world of music. By the way, I do also aspire to become an orchestral conductor in later life. My apologies again for writing an unclear comment.
@pimponthetimps It is absolutely perfect! The massive tension the brass builds before the ultimate release of the final major is simply.. numbing!! I seriously freeze after this piece ends.. My brain restarts...
@rachmaniralf the firebird suite on Disney Fantasia is similar to that, although not as slow at the end, check it out as it beautifully compliments the music!
WOOOOOOOOAW!!!!!!!!!!! Check out the viola that POPPED out and scared that CRAP out of me at 2:02!!!! I've only seen things that those at string pop concerts with a soloist on stage in new age clothing jumping up and down like an idiot. WOW!
Stravinsky...One small motif taken to great heights! This is pure genius! He was way ahead of his time (this was composed between1909 and 11910 and premiered on June 25, 1910). This composer is copied and imitated in countless movie scores with his complex rhythms and 'colors'. No one has come close yet in this age of matching his brilliance! MAGNIFICENT!
MTT's interpretation leaves me totally cold here. Some parts are taken way too fast, and he goes for choppy phrasing that robs the music of beauty and emotional impact. At least the orchestra plays well, although I doubt they were thrilled with his interpretive choices either.
@b286guy Have you every heard Esa-Pekka Salonen with the LA Phil. do The Firebird? My favorite interpretation by far.... From what you said I think you might like his version.
Although I do throughly enjoy MTT's take on the Lullaby!
@MichaelRHolloway Yes! In fact, there is a fantastic LA Phil/Salonen recording of The Firebird posted on YouTube. It's a brilliant, luminous performance. The same can be said of their CD release featuring The Rite of Spring, recorded shortly after the opening of Walt Disney Hall. I wish I had been at those concerts!
No, it's there. You can make it out at 2:04, and at 2:44. Up the back next to the trombones. Alas this movement has precious little for the tuba to play. >:(
@HitThatRowdy96 -I LOVE how the strings are playing the same note in the same register as the triangle there at the end...it just amazes me and gives me goosebumps every time :)
@Senshiboi99 Is there really a need for an explanation here? The cue that MTT uses to cue the trumpets and Timpani at 1:42 vaguely resembles a baseball player's swing while batting. Get the point? :)
As an aspiring student conductor, I've always looked up to Tilson Thomas' conducting style, as it was easy to interpret, easy to understand, but looks very graceful and patronizing at the same time. It's great to know that all conducting motions actually have metaphorical meanings behind them!
Bear in mind Stravinsky made 3 versions of the suite...1911, 1919 and 1945.
For example the score I have does not have the timpani playing as it does here. Mind is the 1911 version, MTT/SFSO may be playing the 1919 or 19545 version (which do differ)
Well, its a great performance, not my personal favourite however. But, one thing its good to say about the SFSO... That amazing brass section is simply breathtaking... one of the very ex-libris of that orchestra! Thanks for posting this performance!
What makes you say this? An interpretation is exactly that, someones way of producing a piece of music. I am not qualified to pass judgment on his conducting ability or his ability to interpret a score, but I find this interpretation very good.
you need to have a model to compare this to. This version find lacked energy, balance, power, among several other things that put this orchestra a tier under some of the US or European orchestras. LA Phil had good delivery of Firebird performances, so I suggest perhaps you could start with that and work your way around the coast or region.
I must agree with dasteufelhund..the LA Philharmonic performance that they released last year with Esa-Pekka Salonen as the conductor is probably the best recording out there. Much better balance, much more power, much more energy. The Firebird is Salonen's signature piece. And it's the complete 1910 version. :)
It's a custom-made viola. The player worked closely with the manufacturer, and they cooked up this shape that took modern acoustic knowledge into account.
Up until the guy retired from the SFSO recently, the instrument was always a signature sight onstage, and sounded amazing as well!
there's differences between the 1919 suite and the actual ballet. i can't tell much difference, but most likely they're playing a different version you have with you.
