Jason Becker is one of the best shred/neoclassical guitarist, but accept this that geniuses like Bach or Paganini are 99999x times more mature,advanced, genius and creative and they play totally different and mnore mature genre - classical, they wrote hundreds of compositions and no one will ever reach their level! The difference between Becker and Bach/ Mozart etc is that most people can appreciate the original classical composers. Most non guitarists just simply don't want to listen to people like Becker because it bores them stupid after a few tracks, even a lot of guitarists get bored of this real quick. I had perpertual burn back when it was released 20 some years ago and have heard pretty much all his stuff since then, I'm certainly not judging him on one track, or even one album. I still think he's a great guitarist. I studied piano to professional level and played 'shred' guitar for 20+ years ( including Beckers stuff ), and compositionally Becker doesn't come close to Bach. Study some of Bachs orchestral works and you'd see the difference. Paganini maybe, Bach, no.
But the main difference is that mainly it's violinists ( and guitarists ) who now study Paganini. Cellists, woodwind, piano players generally study the true great composers like Bach / Mozart etc who could compose just as well for an entire orchestra as they could for individual instruments. Composing for an orchestra is a different league entirely than a few guitar / keyboard tracks. In future, guitarists will still learn Beckers stuff but that's as far as it will go.
Mozart was composing at age 5 and was already a prodigy on both piano and violin, and by his teens was regarded as one of the best players in Austria - aside from his abilities to compose. Beethoven was also regarded as a virtuoso player who composed and performed some of his most complicated pieces despite being completely stone deaf - thus being totally unable to hear what he was playing / composing. Bach was also regarded as one of the best organists of his era.
Yep, but no-one outside of a small group really cares about them, because in all honesty they aren't that accomplished. In 50 years Orchestras will still be playing Bach / Beethoven / Mozart etc, Beckers work will be forgotten by everyone except a percentage of guitar players.

Have you studied some of the great composers works? Mozart and Schubert each composed over 1000 works, symphonies, several choral works, string quartets and other chamber music.The complexity and scope of these compositions outweighs Beckers by a huge amount. Becker used arpeggio sequences over 'traditional' chord progressions in most of his tunes. Take the arpeggios out of his playing, and there isn't a whole lot left. He did a couple of great tunes, and a lot of forgetable ones.
I used to be really impressed with Beckers arpeggios, but after I'd learned them, I realised most of them were formulaic - major arpeggio, play 3 steps down arpeggio, move 2 step up arpeggio, play 3 steps down, 2 up. Swap to relative minor chord, repeat pattern. Switch on an arpeggiator in reason and it will come up with pattern exactly like this, and this formed the basis of most of beckers tunes. The only parts that really stand out to me are the opening to altitudes and opus pocus
@jakethegimp2 some of his songs did do this...mostly his work when he was very young, like 17......some stuff got more complicated- listen to electric prayer for peace, river of longing, black stallion, jasin street, of course serrana (which has a few interesting changes in it and all the cacophony work. it was amazing wat he did in his short period of time of playing....also try to learn his exotic arps and learn serrana, ur fingers will fall off!!!
