You know if you want to make this actual combat (SCAish/LARP) ready replace the form board used pickle barrel. Go on to criagslist and search for "plastic rain barrels" or "pickle barrel" and you should be able to find some for 15 to 20 bucks. It only takes one to make this (depending on your size).

@indymogul if you're still into this kind of thing, it's much nicer to remove the paper from one side of the foamcore, roll it paper-down (foam up) over a coffee-can (or some such item) and re-face the foam side with fresh paper, using pop rivets (or brass tacks if you don't have a gun), neither of which would have pushed your budget over the $50. The fastener poking through would also have given you a good place to tie onto, if you didn't just rivet straight through the fabric (using washers).

It's funny that I've been doing martial arts for years and what we use for full contact armor looks a lot like that but we use costic chemical barrels to make them... the barrels actually have a proper bend so they fit rather nicely and the plastic is rather thick and will stop a blunted sword (highly not recommended for actual sword play! but when tested on a pel actually worked!)
