For one thing the "coldness" of the album which is a feature of the album. The perfect vocals... The finer lead guitars and the subtle music arragments. There will be temporary fill in musicians on the tour tho. Katatonia will still go on. Thank god for that. They are one of Swedens most talented bands!

One of my favorite "bands" is "The Fall of Every Season" but nobody seems to know about them. Those that do say that Katatonia and Opeth are far better... I highly disagree. Opeth is amazing. I'm trying to get into Katatonia now since it comes so highly recommended. It's alright so far. However, from what I've heard up to this point, I wouldn't even consider this the same genre. This is like ultra heavy rock with metal aspects. I love the clean vocals too, but I'm looking for Melodic Doom metal.
check out katatonias earlier stuff. Pick up Brave Murder Day, its an excellent album and Mikael Akerfeldt from opeth plays on it. Its also more doomy, its great stuff.
Well, they get their metal influences from their old days. Katatonia used to be a death/doom metal band, but Jonas changed his vocal style in time for their 1998 release. The growls were having a negative effect on his body.
Opeth tends to switch vocals mid-song, but with katatonia it's never mixed, which is why you probably don't seem to like it.
I think I might give that band you mentioned a listen :P
just try their older stuff. from their very first release until the 'sounds of decay' EP, might be what you're looking for. and they're very personal all-time favorites to me)

Tonight's Decision is probably my least favorite of their albums, though to be fair it's also the one I've listened to the least. This may actually be my favorite album as a whole, but my favorite Katatonia song is either Gateways of Bereavement, Dispossession, or Unfurl.
Yes, this is the album Katatonia changed their sound into something more simple and less Doom but the guitars are still sharp enough and the most important is that the feeling is still the same.

The extreme contrast of the video is what makes it good. Not many people realize how powerful images like that are because we're so used to discernible color and shades. I do admit that walking corpse detracted from the effect though. It's too much of a juxtaposition.

Listen to them and tell me if the mood is the same...
Katatonia belong to a group of bands i call Atmospheric Metal...
with Paradise Lost, Moonspell, Tiamat (not early), Sentenced etc.
Anyway, i believe that Katatonia's best work is Tonight's Decision.
What do you think?

Tonight's Decision is probably my least favorite of their albums, though to be fair it's also the one I've listened to the least. This may actually be my favorite album as a whole, but my favorite Katatonia song is either Gateways of Bereavement, Dispossession, or Unfurl.

Believe me it's an excellent album.
The first one i've heard from Katatonia.
Yes, this is the album Katatonia changed their sound into something more simple and less Doom but the guitars are still sharp enough and the most important is that the feeling is still the same.
"For my demons" and "Right into the Bliss" - check them out..

Lololololol doom is bigger than you think, Cathedral has also changed in their style of playing doom metal. Where their old realeases were more dark, gloomy and brutal, their new style is more old school in the vain of Black Sabbath, Pentagram etc.
The old Katatonia was death/doom, they were forced to make a big change at Discouraged ones. Which also was an atomospheric doom metal album.
The point is: there are lots of sub-genres in doom, just like in death,black etc.

The extreme contrast of the video is what makes it good. Not many people realize how powerful images like that are because we're so used to discernible color and shades. I do admit that walking corpse detracted from the effect though. It's too much of a juxtaposition.
