I inherited this old, cracked, worn-out 45 from my older brothers in 1965. It skipped 3 grooves so I never knew about an entire half a verse of this song until hearing it just now.
Listening to it now 40 some years later, all I can think of is what jug of tainted moonshine or batch of skunkweed growing behind the barn ever caused someone to dream up this great old song.
Little known to others who have heard Sheb sing is that he also was a bronc rider:) He was absolutely one talented dude, acting singing and rodeo, now what else can you do with one life:)))
This song is true. Sheb and my Dad used to watch their Dad's come home after a night of being out on the "town" when they were boys in Oklahoma. He was just Sheb and used to visit us in Alaska where he came up with the character "Ben Colder". He got off the plane, looked at my Dad and said, "I've never been colder in my life!" His sense of humor was his personality and he wouldn't have been Sheb without it.
Had an old 78 RPM when I was a kid in the late 50's. I believe it was Sheb Wooley, might have been his alter-ego, Ben Colder. It was on the MGM label. (I remember the yellow and black with the lion.) One side was a song called "Are You Satisfied?" and the other side was "Humdinger". Remember both tunes but can't track them down anywhere. If anyone can post one or both, I'd be very grateful.
Thanks for uploading this hard to find gem. I haven't heard this in maybe 50 years. I used to like Sheb on Rawhide (Pete Nolan), and I think he was also in High Noon. I agree with someone else who said that he wasted his time and talent messing around with his Ben Colder character.
Love this song!! In 1995 I made a sweeping statement that Kountry Korn music would be the next hot thing for trendy music collectors. Then when the movie Pecker came out in 1998 (w/ Paul Evens,Leroy Pullins . .etc), I thought 'That's it! my prediction was correct!'. That was about all that happened. It's still very hard to find the vinyl though.
Sheb used to come stay with us up in Alaska. He and my Dad were raised together in Oklahoma and I was privleged to have know him. This song was TRUE. My Dad and Sheb used to LAUGH at things that happened in their childhood. They also shared a blind mule. The stories were as wonderful as their friendship. Gotta admit, as a child I was confused when Sheb would visit and do radio spots as Ben Colder. "How can he be sober one minute then drunk the next?!" Sheb was the best! He is truly missed.
every time my dad is drunk he calls my cell or the house and plays this on or machine lol listening 2 a drunk sing it is kinda funny til its ur own father
I bought this on a 45 way back in 1962 on the MGM label. I always felt Sheb could have been a pretty decent country singer instead of messing about on his Ben Colder persona.
Does anyone remember "The Dobro's Coming Back Again" by Sheb ? he done it as Ben Colder, I had the record years ago.

A #1 hit for the late Sheb Wooley on the Country & Western charts. It was the 53rd #1 C&W hit in the Rock Era.

So, did Johnny Cash make a hit out of this tune with his "A Boy Named Sue"? Or am I just seeing things?..

The background singer that does the low Youpapadooba part sounds a lot like Red Sovine.

I think Taylor Swift should put out a version of this song. Old school style. That would be awesome! It would rocket to number one!

Isn't it funny that this is the one country song which was never covered by any of the pop singers? Can't you imagine Perry Como singing this?

Sheb, old by that time, plays a Cavalry Sergeant in _Silverado_. His line:
"I had a gal do that do me, it didn't make her my wife." is a keeper.
This song, too, is a keeper!! Thanks for reminding me -- I hadn't heard it in 30 years!
