Something went badly wrong in sub-continent social traditions. The horrific caste system, honour killings and the like really do beggar belief.

People are much the same the world over - that is to say, mostly morons. The same brain dead simpletons you see furiously waving American flags, if born in the middle east, would be burning them.

These world wide morons, have the capacity for kindness or outright evil, depending on life experience and surrounding culture.

So, while I often lament the corporate monoculture which seems to be slowly overwhelming us all, I sometimes take a break to be thankful that at least it tends to obliterate some of the more horrific excesses of regional culture while it is at it.

Perhaps we will all be able to keep some authentic form of our own regional identity in the years to come, while at least being free of the miserable trap these identities usually become in their most isolated forms.

Specific religious beliefs can't be singled out on this issue. Throughout the India-Pakistan-Bangladesh part of the world, there are still problems with horrific treatment of women, regardless of the prevalent religion.

Such things are rooted in dysfunctional traditional culture, which is manifested in most religions.

Traditional Christianity is similarly hard on women, though it tends towards a kind of repressive fear, rather than the outright aggression it reached Islam developed.

There is nothing in Hindu scriptures that says that women who are married should be treated this way. I am AMAZED that instead of blaming the male chauvinistic piggery that is so prevalent amongs our men, you would blame Hinduism for that??? If anything, if we treat each other with kindness, including Hindus, then this culture of filth and 15th century behaviour would end much sooner. Blame ourselves! Pakistan has been a HUGE failure, is this why we separated from India?

most of the customs were derived from hindu culrure mainly dowery and desire for boy instead of a girl and girl is considered as curse in ur favourite hindu society and by the way u should read news reports about girls burnt in indian ciommonly for not bring enough dower ok pakistan has been failer but what about ur favourite india? it will fall into many parts in result of more then 15 freedom movements .and 60 percent poverty rate ...sooner

Don't assume anything about me, India or Hinduism has no personal affinity for me. I just find it interesting that after partition, we continue to blame all of our problems on India or Hinduism, and yet, let midieval mindsets reign over Pakistan. Female infanticide was very common in Arab culture as well and so is dowry. Instead of pointing fingers at others, lets free ourselves from dictatorships, from male chauvinistic pigs, from religious fundamentalism, from ignorance, from hatred.

And stop with your broad generalisations, culture is never stagnant. Girls are also considered curses in our wonderful Pakistani culture, and if India is so bad, how come in all UNDP Indices, they routinely rate well above Pakistan when it comes to women's rights? Again, free your minds, and save this country, not by hating India or Hinduism, but by cleaning our own closets. Hatred for others is destroying us from within.
