Ironic how Henry wanted the glory yet all he was ever known for was his wives and obsession with obtaining a male heir. Yet Elizabeth, the daughter he scorned, became one of the world's greatest monarchs on her own accord and achieved the glory Henry only dreamed of.
They took some liberties with the timeline and Elizabeth's age here--Elizabeth was only eight when Kitty Howard was sentenced to death, and it had a lasting impact on her to see how she was rejected. Her father's treatment of his wives was one of the reasons she decided never to marry, and let her husband have that kind of power over her.
I love that curtsey the actress playing Elizabeth does, before she leaves, and her look. That is pure Anne Boleyn magnetism--and you can tell the actress had watched Seasons 1 and 2!
I love that look on his face as Elizabeth bows and walks away. You can see clearly that he's reminded of Anne and he's not sure if he should be amazed or annoyed by it. Ha Anne is not easily forgotten and Elizabeth has all of her mothers charm :)
Well I mean it's not like they had fans back then. They were in these dresses, and it's blazing hot out, plus it being hot out there was probably no air coming from the outside
@brandie7654 The UK is bitterly cold most of the year, and mild for about 3 weeks only. I should know from living there for years. When I see the pretty dresses from the series I am reminded of my wedding gown: warm and toasty from the waist down and freezing around the shoulders and neck.
@bexie1992 My bad luck then -missed all the warm years. Or rather, maybe I am not used to the cold. My hubby can walk around in 18 degrees because it feels warm to him but I am still going around in a jumper! Now last year was warm but, again, I was stuck overseas :-/
does anyone notice how Lady Rochford looked as tho she was uncomfortable, i mean Elizabeth was her niece, and im sure the whole anne thing was flashing back in her memory, maybe thats why she was a little " hot"
Elizabeth was just like her mother, controlled, witty, smart and oh that smile..anne gave birth to the best queen of england. Liz never ahted her father and anne also have that to credit because she never gave liz or brainwashed her to ahte henry, but instead deep in her heart anne only wants best for liz.
@chykim1: "I'd like to give you these...they are of not much value...but they'll remind you of ME." LOL. If I were Elizabeth, I'd say thank you, then bitch-slap her, for sheer fun.
@ChartheShark: Yes, I've often wondered what Elizabeth I really thought about the fact her father had her mother killed. After reading through different interpretations of Elizabeth I's life, I've come to the conclusion that, Elizabeth probably reasoned to herself that it was the machinations of other people in court that turned her father against her mother. Given the life-endangering politics in her family and the royal court, she suppressed the rest of her bad feelings, poor brave girl.
@brendalizruiz Elizabeth I did not look like her mother. She had her father's red hair and pale skin. It is known she capitalized on how much she resembled Henry to silence those who at the time thought she was not Henry's daughter.
I love how Elizabeth has Ann's smile in this one and the way Henry looks at her like his seen a ghost. This is one of the epsoides were u see that Henry does in his own way love Elizabeth. But he would never admit it because if he did then he would have had to admit that he loved Ann just as much.
If you look closely at Henry after he introduces Elizabeth, you can see he has tears in his eyes. It looks like he is reminiscing about Anne and thinking how much Elizab reminds him of Anne. The way the camera zooms in on his face tells us the story & makes it obvious. Not only tell from his body lang but also you can tell he is proud of Eliza in his voice. But Henry being himself is far too egotistical to ever admit the fact. Henry does <3 his daughter and deep down he his proud of her.
His Majesty King Henry VIII never denyed he was Elizabeths father. all he did was deny that she was ligitimate so instead of being Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth she was only The Lady Elizabeth
I like this scene very much because I think that in this we can see like Henry sees Anne Boleyn in her daughter Elizabeth. She reminds her, and i like that because Henry loved Anne so much and he knowed that she was a very great woman and know that elizabeth is like her mother.
@MarinaMaxwellYuy Whether she was one of the greatest is debatable. Contrary to popular belief she wasn't exactly to the friendliest queen nor merciful. Ask the Irish how good queen Bess was towards them. That being said I hope I do not get beheaded at this years ren faire lol
@NoSenseization I know that Elizabeth was not a very friendly queen, I know a bit about what happened to the Irish under her reign. What I meant with my comment is that Elizabeth became somehow a legend and it is quite funny to see howm uch Henry was dissapointed while Elizabeth fulfilled his dreams.
@hothotheat3000 u may be right however, I think the reason is the look that she had. When her mother was with Henry she had this look that 1 couldn't stop looking at, and it seduced Henry, she also had this elegant way of speaking, and Elizabeth just did both of those things, and 4 a second she reminded him of Anne, and he felt a tad of sorrow.
He looked at her like that because she turned her back on them when she left the room. YOU DON'T DO THAT TO ROYALTY. You walk out bowing and facing the king until you can't see him anymore. Turning your back is a huge sign of disrespect, hence the sound effect when she turned.
Another historical mistake.. Elizabeth was only about 7 when Henry married Katherine Howard. But I kind of like how they made her older which reminded Henry of Anne.
Isn't Elizabeth supposed to be 8 years old when she met kitty?? or am i wrong because i do remember reading that elizabeth was 8 and this elizabeth luks like she's 13 or 14... correct me if i'm wrong.
@SsQuadProductions If you watch the show, then you will know that it is not reality, they have dramatically condensed the timeline of the Tudor history to make this show into 4 seasons. The timeline is not accurate historically because of this and many things are dramatized. If you are watching this hoping to get accurate history and timeline, don't bother because it is still very much a fictional historic drama and portrayal of the Tudor era.
...this shows how adroit Elizabeth was and how foolish Bloody Mary was....Elizabeth could do what was politically correct while Bloody Mary couldn't, she had to live up to her principals which Monarchs can't always do, and why we remember the daughter of Catherine of Aragon as a Serial Killer and the bloodiest Monarch England ever had!...
well, who cares about that kitty girl anyway :P it's obious that he's looking at his daughter and thinking about anne and how much elizabeth reminds him of her!!!
@jessyyy999 Anne Boleyn was my favorite Tudor wife as well, but let's face facts. Anne was probably miles away from Henry's heart and mind at that point in his life. His love for her ended when he realized she wouldn't give him the son he coveted. It's so silly when people say things like Anne was his true love throughout his life when nothing in history shows this as fact.
I love the delicious irony of how the Tudor period strived for male heirs, and yet the women of that time period are the most remembered. The Six Queens, Mary I, Elizabeth I...the list goes on and on.
@iluvwinterweather Yes, the irony of it all is what fascinates me the most. He wanted a son as heir, divorced and ruined one wife and murdered another in his quest for a son, yet his two unwanted daughters took over the throne, one of whom became one of -- if not *the* most famous queen of England, possibly more famous than Henry himself. Today his wives get more attention than he does. I'm sure he's still turning in his grave.
I did find it interesting enough that he married Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard, cousins. Elizabeth's stepmother was her own cousin and than she became Queen herself. Guess the Boleyn/Howard clan was the most victorious family out of the wives.
i think Henry looks at her because the way Elizabeth bowed was kind of the way Anne would bow and leave the room. like Henry is still kinda haunted by Anne looking at Elizabeth.
How old is Elizabeth portrayed in this episode? I know it's the same season as when Henry dies, and Elizabeth was supposed to be 13 or 14, but is she 13 here?
@squirrelflight5 Technically, at this time Elizabeth was around seven or eight. I don't get why they aged her so quickly, but here she's portrayed to be around 13 or 14.
@squirrelflight5 Well actually she is supposed to be 7. She was born in 1533 and Henry married Kitty in 1540 so... 1540-1533=7. But yeah, she looks like a 13 years old girl.
@stokrotka1011 history shows that he loved jane and anne th most because when he beheaded anne he regreted it and was very sad but when jane died he was a reck he cried and cried so he love them both
You know what I've noticed, Elizabeth was the only child of the King born during the reformation process. Mary was before, and Edward was after, this episode which would be 1541, making her eight years old, means the reformation was eight years ago, lol.
no, it was elizabeths bow and smile, she did it identically to anne, like her mother, the fact that eliz. bowed and smiled at that moment EXACTLY LIKE anne did was probably a deliberate thing the directors put in to dredge up anne . he wasnt thinking of anne at all untill eliz. did that, the sight and memory it dragged up probably took him off guard. but if you look at old episodes and compare annes bow and smile and elizabeths right here, you'll see it.a mini mental land mine detinating.
I've noticed Henry staring at Elizabeth after she left. Probably because he regrets that it was his fault she never knew her mother. Through the whole series I was wondering when he would say that he still sees Anne in her. I was actually thinking he'd say it to Charles Brandon half way through the season but it turns out he says it to Anne's ghost at the end - go figure.
Catherine was very friendly with Elizabeth, and this is mentioned in the serious Elizabeth R. Her death affected Elizabeth greatly. Anne Boleyn was not Henry's soul mate. That is 20th century talk. Anne promised sons, she didn't give him any. Henry was first a King, and his duty was to give England an heir. Everything else was secondary. Marriages were politcal for the most part. Not romantic.
@Saffron49 yes but Anne Boleyn was just a girl, a commoner, an aristocrat. She was not a royal princess! This was an unusual and rare marriage for a King: to marry for love and not for political reasons etc.
@ekateri28 Just to point out that you can't be a commoner and an aristocrat at the same time. They're opposites. The Boleyn family were quite prestigious in the upper class society of the Tudor period.
I believe that the glance that he took at elizabeth meant that, he could see all the amazing things that anne had---that made him want to ditch his wife, ditch his kid and ditch his religon. ........thats some pretty powerful shit.
It's funny how Henry wanted a son because he wanted a strong, powerful heir. He did end up getting his strong heir, but it wasn't a boy. It turns out that a woman wasn't to weak to be a great ruler after all.
i thnk he killed anne because he he believed that she really did all those things thats why he looks at elizabeth like that in this scene he remembers anne and everything that happened
I'm strongly convinced that Anne was Henry VIII's soul mate. They were soo alike, both very clever and ambitious...It was probably not the right kind of love, but they did love each other very much.
@ProfessorEdelstein actually there is. Because Eliazabeth and Catherine were already family, Catherine instantly took a liking to Elizabeth and very often shared dinners with her.
Whilst I am definitely anti-Anne Boleyn, I definitely believe that Henry loved her for a time and was not driven by his lust for her, but his love... However, he grew to hate her when he found that all of Anne's promises were lies. Honestly, the way Henry stares after Elizabeth at 0:59 makes me think that he was thinking about Anne.
I think Katherine of Aragon was the love of his life. He was married to her the longest. He wept when he found out she died. If event one of Katherine's baby boys had lived he never would have divorced her.
He didn't love Anne people, he lusted after her, and when she couldn't give him the son he wanted which he didn't get from his other wife Catherine, the lust went away, and it went to Jane. The only reason he liked Jane was because she gave him the son. Anne was the first to be really lusted by the King, Anne played a game of: Anne become Queen. That's all it was lust, not love.
@mckfrr That doesn't make sense for a King who practically slept with the entire country's women (a whoremonger) and all of a sudden sees Anne Boleyn and he lusts over here when she plays hard to get? Give me break! Why put your kingdom on the line, make so many enemies, put England upside down, and give Anne EVERYTHING she can possibly desire for the sake of LUST? I don't get it...
@ekateri28 I get it perfectly. He wanted what he couldn't have. What's the fun of getting something that is easily accessible to a KING? All he had to do was snap his fingers and he got what he wanted. Anne did not do this. Of course he went out of his way to get her! The challenge itself must've been invigorating. Of course, once he had her... Well, you know the rest of it.
I always think of Anne Boleyn as the one he loved the most, afterall he divorced his wife of 20+ years, completely broke with his church and defied his people to marry her. I also think she was probably most suited to him, Catherine of Aragon was too old and perhaps too motherly. Jane was his attempt to get as far away from Anne (Anne was fiery Jane was a bit of a drip). And Katherine howard was his mid life crisis. The other two were just companions.
I don't think Anne was his soulmate. I don't think any of his wives are to be honest - he treated all of them pretty damn badly.
I like the actress who plays Kitty, she comes across very childish (also like the indulgent look Henry gave her) which is a pretty faithful portrayal, I think. From what I've read Henry sort of treated her like a pampered pet, so it all fits.
I think the way he looks at Elizabeth and the other reminiscences of Anne are mainly to hint the idea that he doesn't just miss her, but he feels guilty for what he did to her.
I liked Kitty! I honestly think that Henry was often reminded of Anne through her sometimes. BUT Elizabeth reminded him of her the most. That look he gave Elizabeth was like if he was seeing Anne in her place instead of Elizabeth.
God forgive me for the following: but I think the actress they got to play the Lady Elizabeth looks like an albino who kind of looks like she could actually be black...but with weird crimped ginger-like features.
Ironic how Henry wanted the glory yet all he was ever known for was his wives and obsession with obtaining a male heir. Yet Elizabeth, the daughter he scorned, became one of the world's greatest monarchs on her own accord and achieved the glory Henry only dreamed of.

which episode does henry see elizabeth after he shunned her after anne's death?
squirrelflight5 1 year ago
How old is Elizabeth portrayed in this episode? I know it's the same season as when Henry dies, and Elizabeth was supposed to be 13 or 14, but is she 13 here?
squirrelflight5 1 year ago
@squirrelflight5 Technically, at this time Elizabeth was around seven or eight. I don't get why they aged her so quickly, but here she's portrayed to be around 13 or 14.
iluvwinterweather 1 year ago
@iluvwinterweather Yeah, probably just because she look the part or something
squirrelflight5 1 year ago
@squirrelflight5 Well actually she is supposed to be 7. She was born in 1533 and Henry married Kitty in 1540 so... 1540-1533=7. But yeah, she looks like a 13 years old girl.

Catherine H and ELizabeth had a g ood relationship. She considered her a sister.Mentioned in Elizabeth R.
Saffron49 1 year ago 2
You know what I've noticed, Elizabeth was the only child of the King born during the reformation process. Mary was before, and Edward was after, this episode which would be 1541, making her eight years old, means the reformation was eight years ago, lol.
mckfrr 1 year ago 2
no, it was elizabeths bow and smile, she did it identically to anne, like her mother, the fact that eliz. bowed and smiled at that moment EXACTLY LIKE anne did was probably a deliberate thing the directors put in to dredge up anne . he wasnt thinking of anne at all untill eliz. did that, the sight and memory it dragged up probably took him off guard. but if you look at old episodes and compare annes bow and smile and elizabeths right here, you'll see it.a mini mental land mine detinating.

She certainly looks like she could be Jonathan and Natalie's daughter. She has her eyes and face-shape and his mouth and nose.

I've noticed Henry staring at Elizabeth after she left. Probably because he regrets that it was his fault she never knew her mother. Through the whole series I was wondering when he would say that he still sees Anne in her. I was actually thinking he'd say it to Charles Brandon half way through the season but it turns out he says it to Anne's ghost at the end - go figure.
chocolatefountain95 1 year ago 8
Catherine was very friendly with Elizabeth, and this is mentioned in the serious Elizabeth R. Her death affected Elizabeth greatly. Anne Boleyn was not Henry's soul mate. That is 20th century talk. Anne promised sons, she didn't give him any. Henry was first a King, and his duty was to give England an heir. Everything else was secondary. Marriages were politcal for the most part. Not romantic.
Saffron49 1 year ago 7
@Saffron49 yes but Anne Boleyn was just a girl, a commoner, an aristocrat. She was not a royal princess! This was an unusual and rare marriage for a King: to marry for love and not for political reasons etc.
ekateri28 1 year ago
@ekateri28 Just to point out that you can't be a commoner and an aristocrat at the same time. They're opposites. The Boleyn family were quite prestigious in the upper class society of the Tudor period.
Sirea0 1 year ago
@ekateri28 He married her for a son hunny. Had Katherine's son lived he wouldn't have gave two shits about Anne.

1536anne 1 year ago 3
I'm strongly convinced that Anne was Henry VIII's soul mate. They were soo alike, both very clever and ambitious...It was probably not the right kind of love, but they did love each other very much.

That look Henry gives at 0:59 says "I miss Anne, you are so much like your mother, something tells me you will be queen" all at once.
I'm just not crazy about this actress as Elizabeth. She's very stiff.

I read somewhere that Elizabeth did like Catherine Howard very much. I think Elizabeth became fearful of marriage when Catherine was beheaded.
chinagrrl 1 year ago
@chinagrrl Actually there very little evidence that the two actually met, although Catherine Howard did send Elizabeth som trinket in a letter once.
i think you may be right about the turning off marriage thing though.
ProfessorEdelstein 1 year ago
@ProfessorEdelstein actually there is. Because Eliazabeth and Catherine were already family, Catherine instantly took a liking to Elizabeth and very often shared dinners with her.

Maybe Catherine favors Elizabeth because she is the daughter of her cousin, Anne Boleyn.

look at henry's face! he will never forget anne! ;)
xodannieox01 1 year ago 2
Whilst I am definitely anti-Anne Boleyn, I definitely believe that Henry loved her for a time and was not driven by his lust for her, but his love... However, he grew to hate her when he found that all of Anne's promises were lies. Honestly, the way Henry stares after Elizabeth at 0:59 makes me think that he was thinking about Anne.
EnchantressLaina 1 year ago 4
It's kinda sad how Henry looks at Elizabeth as she leaves. She really was the only thing he had left of Anne.
kriscutie109 1 year ago
I think Katherine of Aragon was the love of his life. He was married to her the longest. He wept when he found out she died. If event one of Katherine's baby boys had lived he never would have divorced her.
TudorRose85 1 year ago
He didn't love Anne people, he lusted after her, and when she couldn't give him the son he wanted which he didn't get from his other wife Catherine, the lust went away, and it went to Jane. The only reason he liked Jane was because she gave him the son. Anne was the first to be really lusted by the King, Anne played a game of: Anne become Queen. That's all it was lust, not love.
mckfrr 1 year ago
@mckfrr That doesn't make sense for a King who practically slept with the entire country's women (a whoremonger) and all of a sudden sees Anne Boleyn and he lusts over here when she plays hard to get? Give me break! Why put your kingdom on the line, make so many enemies, put England upside down, and give Anne EVERYTHING she can possibly desire for the sake of LUST? I don't get it...
ekateri28 1 year ago 4
@ekateri28 I get it perfectly. He wanted what he couldn't have. What's the fun of getting something that is easily accessible to a KING? All he had to do was snap his fingers and he got what he wanted. Anne did not do this. Of course he went out of his way to get her! The challenge itself must've been invigorating. Of course, once he had her... Well, you know the rest of it.

it's amazing that Elizabeth became a good and beloved Queen. her father was a monster.
TheLeaveTaking 1 year ago
I always think of Anne Boleyn as the one he loved the most, afterall he divorced his wife of 20+ years, completely broke with his church and defied his people to marry her. I also think she was probably most suited to him, Catherine of Aragon was too old and perhaps too motherly. Jane was his attempt to get as far away from Anne (Anne was fiery Jane was a bit of a drip). And Katherine howard was his mid life crisis. The other two were just companions.
Greya77 1 year ago 2
I don't think Anne was his soulmate. I don't think any of his wives are to be honest - he treated all of them pretty damn badly.
I like the actress who plays Kitty, she comes across very childish (also like the indulgent look Henry gave her) which is a pretty faithful portrayal, I think. From what I've read Henry sort of treated her like a pampered pet, so it all fits.
Somnorexic 1 year ago 36
I think the way he looks at Elizabeth and the other reminiscences of Anne are mainly to hint the idea that he doesn't just miss her, but he feels guilty for what he did to her.
FantasmaLuna 1 year ago
@FantasmaLuna
I think so too, but the fact that he had her buried in an old arrow box is sickening.
princessewhiterose 1 year ago 4
I liked Kitty! I honestly think that Henry was often reminded of Anne through her sometimes. BUT Elizabeth reminded him of her the most. That look he gave Elizabeth was like if he was seeing Anne in her place instead of Elizabeth.
