This car has no place or market in the US outside of super-dense cities like NYC. The one and only advantage is that you can parallel park in smaller spaces...or park 2 in a normal parking space (good luck finding other smart cars). Subcompacts and compacts like the Fiesta, Focus, Cruze, Cobalt, Accent, Yaris, Fit, and Elantra offer SO much more car for your money, can fit in any normal parking space, and still manage to get over 30mpg city and somewhere in the neighborhood of 40mpg highway...
I own Smart fortwo passion coupe with navigation and it's the best car anyone can drive it goes actually not bad at all in any area and I don't ever have to worry about parking or about the fact is my car too long to drive just to say it rules the streets today.
Smart Fortwo isn't a good "reviewers car", so to speak. The transmission is not as horrible as most first time testers make it out to be, you just have to learn to use it. Now, I'm not saying that the transmission is perfect when you get used to it, but it's not really that bad. The Fortwo is an excellent city car with excellent safety, for a such small car.
In the uk anyone will ride your bumper or cut u off what ever car your driving, dosen't make any difference what so ever, people just don't care and have me first attitudes here and fcuk u lol.
I've just bought a 2007 ForTwo Passion and from my experience, I think this video is spot on. BUT I still really love my car! It excels in British town, which have narrow, congested streets, where speed and power aren't important, but parking and fuel consumption are!! My last car was a 2.2L gas guzzler which cost an arm and a leg to run. I'm pleased with my choice.
@yousuf510 Hey sunshine, don't scoff. Just do the maths. Petrol in the UK is £1.35 or $2.16 per litre (highest in Europe). Which is $8.17 per US gallon. A car that does 30 mpg and on a carbon based road tax of £300 per year ($480), that starts to add up. Small cars make sense over here.
@mrfakecom Smart doesn't make sense in the US. You said rubbish, must be from UK, Smart should stay in Europe. People in the US drive bigger cars and its simple phisics, a 4000 pound car hitting a 2000 pound car, the big car will be jostled around violently but the smart will go flying. Smart hitting a 6000 pound SUV, forget it. I can't wait till these pathetic excuses for cars get removed from the US market.
please watch a crash-test of a Smart car.....it's not a plastic toy car.
Not only in the US there are idiots who drive huge cars with to much horsepower, here in Europe sadly enough there also a lot of idiots who drive cars bigger then their ass allow them to.
Sometimes i have to drive my boss his car, a Range Rover, it's ridiculous big.....it actually has a camera to make it easier to park.....it easely consumes at least 10 liter in 100 km.....
@mrfakecom I'm American and I agree with your post 100%. Most Americans don't understand necessity and will drive anything that's spoon fed to them via Hollywood or TV.
@mgibbs88 The death of the SUV is steadfast, the new Explorer will be on a sedan chassis, the new Tahoe/Yukon and Ranger will be on crossover chassis.
Simple physics eh? Since you're a physics professor I guess you know that every car is built exactly the same way with exactly the same safety features and that cars will crash at a perfect angle at a perfectly matched speed.
Using physics is an excuse, this is the real world, the smart performs well here.
@mgibbs88 Why doesn't the smart make sense here? Have you tried to park an Excursion on a crowded city street? Have you lived in a bustling city and had two choices of transport, one being full size suv and the other public?
Apparently not.
The fortwo is a CITY CAR, meaning built for the city. Don't expect it to shine on the highway because it was built for the city...
Boy this nasty little bastard holds nothing back on his opinions, and that is what they are really. I will tell you he is so dead wrong it is not even funny. I think that the Smart is a perfect little car for in town driving and holds it's own very well. For one, it is a blast to drive around town, and even though the tranny is something to get used to, it will not take long to get accustomed to. You can drive it as a full manual if you like, and it is plenty safe. Stick with your Miata fool.
I drove a round trip to Calgary from Vancouver (Canada),approximately 2100 KM. It ideal sustain highway speed is 70 to 75 Miles per hours and speeding up to 90 for short period of time is a easy job though not recommend for long sustain drive.
The Smart Fortwo is a Drivers car. If you seriously hate driving then stay away from it because you'll hate it. For someone who claims to ride a motorcycle this guy doesn't seem to realize you gotta treat the Smart like driving a Motorcycle.
and much like a motorcycle you gotta get used to the transmission otherwise it will be shaky like its about to stall.
Oh well can't please everyone. I love my 2009 Smart Fortwo.
I have owned 2 Smart cars in Europe and purchasing another one in the US. I think that this review is pretty rubbish. The car is great for cities. The car is not great for long commuting or on highways. With that said, I have driving from Barcelona to Cannes in a Smart car and had zero problems.
@nerdgirl His review of the Smart ForTwo was primarily for drivers in the USA. Experiences driving a small car in Europe are going to be different. In the USA, the smaller the car the less of a human being you are considered to be. The less valuable your life is considered to be. People in big vehicles will run you off the road if they can get away with it and think nothing of it. The danger is real. It sucks and it is wrong but it is true.
actually 2 weeks ago i bought my second fortwo and its lovely, the 2010 feels more secure at high speeds and its not hard to get and maintain 100 mph
as the car is so light it really brakes well so i really agree with the guy who said that this car is a car that you hate or really love
ahh and the gearbox is rubbish but intelligent people could easily get used to it, the same as the braking
It's a great car, and the new one is an improvement over the old generation car... every car has it's positives and negatives, and that's something you have to keep in mind. Some people get it, some people don't - the ones who don't go off and buy other vehicles that suit their neds better. :)
He brings up a great point at the end. As someone with 245 000 km on his smart, every day I've owned it I've put up with impatient drivers who absolutely insist on cutting me off or tailgating. When I hold 135 km/h on the main highways here in Canada, I can beat all other traffic with ease, finding gaps to slip in and out of (you have no idea how much the BMW crowd hates this!), but then some idiot in a Caravan parked in the left lane doing 10 over the speed limit wrecks that.

the other day i got in a smart for two.. it sucked. the interior sucked. i am 6 3' and i had to put the seat all the way back to get in. and when i got out the rail the seat rides on i cut myself.... this car FAILS.
I looked at the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, and the Smart ForTwo. My wife and I ended up on the Smart ForTwo decidedly that is was good handling, easy to drive and fun. I wanted something that didn't feel like I was punching the clock to go to work, even though this class of car has low pickup. It is fun, and the manual mode of the transmission is easy, like a lazy mans standard automatic. We enjoy the ride and have minimized our eco/economic footprint.
The pickup is not too bad, just don't pull out into highway traffic expecting a burst of speed. I still don't know about those headwinds and handling he's talking about and I live in the windy city. 0-60 is much like the Civic Hybrid.
I briefly considered this car last year. It has kind of a cool eco-vibe that gets you a little bit of cred here, but not much.
What it came down to was if I only had room for one car, do I want this? I know the company drove it coast to coast to demonstrate that it is a "real" car, but really, would you want to do that? Me either. For about the same money I bought a loaded Pontiac G5 that gets 6.5L/100km on the highway, nearly as good as the Smart, and it's a damn sight more comfy too.
@manitobasuntanner Really? they really bad mouthed it badly in the crash tests...Thats cool that its safer then they give it credit for! I hope your mom is ok ^_^
"The 8-foot, 8-inch vehicle received the highest rating of good in front-end and side-impact testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, helping address some concerns that consumers may be more vulnerable in the tiny two-seater."
Crashing into walls doesn't prove anything. When a car is coming towards you at 80mph you're going to be in a hell of trouble. Imagine being in this car while someone is coming at you 80mph? The insurance institute for highway safety can suck my dick because they're wrong.
You never went to college did you? I can tell you didn't. You do not have to answer. Are you defending your empirical conclusions or your sense of personal identity as an American. lol. You entertain me with your weak sense of identity.
Did college teach you to believe everything you read? Is the car best in its class of size 1? What tests were performed? Does the Insurance Institute really care about your safety?
Do you understand physics? What happens when objects of differing mass strike each other? Does the less massive object experience greater acceleration than the greater? Can rapid accelleration cause your brain to impact your skull? Think first.
"The 8-foot, 8-inch vehicle received the highest rating of good in front-end and side-impact testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, helping address some concerns that consumers may be more vulnerable in the tiny two-seater."

u know whats funny my friend hit a guy in that car and he has brain damage its small and wont protect when it comes to the time it need to its small. go ahed think what u want but when it comes to that day dont blame anybody else cause u wanted to be in a small car
Whoops, I was thinking about the Yaris crash, OUCH!!
The Fit, on the other hand, is bigger with 4 door and more room so it's a IDK why they compared 2 door subcompacts with a 4 door subcompact. The Fit's test was quite impressive.
You're happy with a Fit and I am with a smart so we're both happy!
P.S. LOL when he said it scared the crap out of him.
The problem with this car... it does nothing for those with small dicks... they still need their large SUV and 4x4.. This review has to be paid by large american companies... it is not truthful.. Too bad the planet is dying because of people who need large vehicles to feel like men..
If i didn't know better i would bet this guy works for GM. I have seen alot of reviews on the smartcar and never heard anyone as down on it as this guy. If this car was so bad why does it sell well in Europe? I rather be in a roll cage that a smartcar has than a SUV which when rolled over the roof crushes down flat. New cars and SUV these days are made out of tin foil and most accidents they are totaled. No wonder there are so many airbags. There are many happy smartcars owners, decide4yourself
Lots of small cars like that in Japan. In Toyota there are parking spaces on the street that have power outlets to plug electric cars into to recharge.
I have a gasoline car but it is only 650cc :-)
The aggressive driver problem he talks about isn't a problem in Japan.
Can see some car and train stuff on Japan on out site.

What guy would be caught drivin this piece of $hit. I'll keep my 4-wheel drive truck thank you. I'd like to see Obama and his fam in this sardine can. How gay would he look drivin this death trap.
@drealm LMAO! I always thought women mostly drove 4X4's in America. Oh well, either way, the car isn't bad. Not good for rural areas, but great in the city. And it's great in the snow!
ok how long they been makin these? A couple years?? And this guys all this sucks, that sucks. I'm sure the Model T sucked at first too. And if everyone had one, wrecks would be like bumper cars.
is a nice little car but seems over priced and not really practical for todays roads and traffic chaos i had a mini cooper mk2 that went threw a big pot hole which shook the left wing off had to sellotape it back on heh but yeah could see this car rolling over in the same circumstances
oh yeah the summer is here, i love the summer i dont like the weather but i like the fact that you can go out more and feel really happy .idont know what it is but i always feel very positive in the summer.hooray for summer..
COMMENT PART 3: i've had a few situations where people put me (and themselves) in danger because of their opinions. i drove a honda accord before the smart.. which i loved, and i do not have a single regret about getting the smart. it's a fantastic car... and i always get 38-41 mpg.
COMMENT PART 2: it is very different from most cars, so you have to LEARN how to make it do what you want it to do. i've never had an issue accelerating on on-ramps or merging in traffic with other cars.. i've also never had a problem or complaint about the braking "issues" he talks about. the ONLY downside and the ONLY time i've ever felt unsafe in the car is in situations where people on the road make assumptions about the car and take those assumptions out on people driving the smart car.
COMMENT PART 1: i've been driving a smart car for the last 7 months. i drive it at least 90 miles per day (to and from work) on the highway. granted, what he states about the cross winds is true and very noticeable when you first start driving the car.. but the longer you drive it, the less you notice it and you stop feeling like you have to overcorrect so much. the transmission and acceleration he talks about is pretty ridiculous...
why dont little people drive these? :O no seriously! that would be like perfect for them! im not trying to be mean, i just think it would be safer or something
what bothers me more than the size is the transmission in this car ..if its bad when u buy the car new how long before you need repairs ? how bad of a used car will it be? i know they wanted to reach more people by having an auto or close to it but this was a bad idea...better start using automatics.orig was a swatch /mercedes project by the way.
I'd buy one of these if a diesel engine and manual transmission were offered in the States. It's unfortunate that they chose to offer such a terrible drivetrain as the only choice for the US market.
I could forgive those shortcomings if this thing got over 60mpg but I can find allot better cars that get same MPG as the smart car. I expected better MPG from this tiny vehicle.
who gives a shit if you like it, or not. You will get one, or get thrown in federal prison for violating Obama's new presidential order to the masses. Also, from now on, you must all change your underwear 3 times a day - and you must wear them on the outside of your clothes so the underwear-changing CZAR can check.
The problem with this car isn't that it's too dangerous (think motorcycle or ATV), it's that it's WAY too expensive and the gas cost is WAY too high (premium only and 33MPG). If people could think of this as an upgrade to their golf cart just for errands, it would make sense. But the price would need to be halved and the MPG doubled - or electric.
But you can get more miles buying one because you will do more public transportation and bicycling just to not use this very bad car. I see no goals: Not enough economy in gas, not safety, not looks, not practical for use. Not smart choice.

You never went to college did you? I can tell you didn't. You do not have to answer. Are you defending your empirical conclusions or your sense of personal identity as an American. lol. You entertain me with your weak sense of identity.
FutureStudy 2 years ago
Did college teach you to believe everything you read? Is the car best in its class of size 1? What tests were performed? Does the Insurance Institute really care about your safety?
Do you understand physics? What happens when objects of differing mass strike each other? Does the less massive object experience greater acceleration than the greater? Can rapid accelleration cause your brain to impact your skull? Think first.

It's just cute. For the price of this car, you might as well get a Honda Fit.

Watch the Fit's crash test SnMagnifique, not so pretty
Neonspinnazz30 2 years ago
I have a 2009 Honda Fit and the crash test ratings are better than the Smart car. So yeah, it's better.
SnMagnifique 2 years ago
Whoops, I was thinking about the Yaris crash, OUCH!!
The Fit, on the other hand, is bigger with 4 door and more room so it's a IDK why they compared 2 door subcompacts with a 4 door subcompact. The Fit's test was quite impressive.
You're happy with a Fit and I am with a smart so we're both happy!
P.S. LOL when he said it scared the crap out of him.

The problem with this car... it does nothing for those with small dicks... they still need their large SUV and 4x4.. This review has to be paid by large american companies... it is not truthful.. Too bad the planet is dying because of people who need large vehicles to feel like men..
sigmet61 2 years ago
what about the women who drive these suvs? are you calling them cross-genderizers?
leloodallasmultipass 2 years ago

COMMENT PART 3: i've had a few situations where people put me (and themselves) in danger because of their opinions. i drove a honda accord before the smart.. which i loved, and i do not have a single regret about getting the smart. it's a fantastic car... and i always get 38-41 mpg.

PackageSeverance 2 years ago
COMMENT PART 2: it is very different from most cars, so you have to LEARN how to make it do what you want it to do. i've never had an issue accelerating on on-ramps or merging in traffic with other cars.. i've also never had a problem or complaint about the braking "issues" he talks about. the ONLY downside and the ONLY time i've ever felt unsafe in the car is in situations where people on the road make assumptions about the car and take those assumptions out on people driving the smart car.
kleamil 2 years ago
COMMENT PART 1: i've been driving a smart car for the last 7 months. i drive it at least 90 miles per day (to and from work) on the highway. granted, what he states about the cross winds is true and very noticeable when you first start driving the car.. but the longer you drive it, the less you notice it and you stop feeling like you have to overcorrect so much. the transmission and acceleration he talks about is pretty ridiculous...
kleamil 2 years ago
Why 33/41? I think a Civic or similar get better mileage.

kikiladyvideos 2 years ago
what bothers me more than the size is the transmission in this car ..if its bad when u buy the car new how long before you need repairs ? how bad of a used car will it be? i know they wanted to reach more people by having an auto or close to it but this was a bad idea...better start using automatics.orig was a swatch /mercedes project by the way.

Smart For Two my arse - Dumb for 1.
DofaDofah 2 years ago
The problem with this car isn't that it's too dangerous (think motorcycle or ATV), it's that it's WAY too expensive and the gas cost is WAY too high (premium only and 33MPG). If people could think of this as an upgrade to their golf cart just for errands, it would make sense. But the price would need to be halved and the MPG doubled - or electric.
chuck2205 2 years ago 3
But you can get more miles buying one because you will do more public transportation and bicycling just to not use this very bad car. I see no goals: Not enough economy in gas, not safety, not looks, not practical for use. Not smart choice.
