  • They have.o.k. energy, but these girls need to sing in key. Vocals need some work, but at least they're on stage groovin' and having fun.

  • Really makes me miss Heart...especially Ann Wilson.

  • @TheRefTX They still tour.

  • lol put the acoustic guitarest back into the dark, 1 ugly motha fucka

  • They missed a great opportunity to fill out the song even more with singing the background vocals at 2:13 during the bridge (seeing as how there are two of them with mics)...very good nonetheless.

  • shit this is good

  • this kinda let me down. I was expecting a super folky version. Still a great performance though

  • I'd be curious to hear this ensemble cover Rhiannon. Particularly Becky Stark, the singer with the long hair. Her voice is more birdlike than Stevie Nicks, but it might have something just as profound to offer.

  • Hilarious, in a very affectionate way. The song is soooo melodramatic and of its time that it was almost a parody of itself back when. But there's nothing condescending or snarky here -- is it possible that a song so obviously targeted at teenage male fantasies can be given a performance that's finally, good clean fun? That's how it looks to me.

  • @jeremiah123z It was being real before people had to be told to keep it real.

  • OK, they're not as "balsie" as Ann and Nancy but I still detected some chills at 2:41. This gang has fun! Wish I could see em live!

  • That was fucking intense!!!

  • They're having so much fun, and they're all extremely talented. <3

  • The girls' vocals are a little weak, but musically they are right on solid here. Great cover!

  • Obvously, doesn't compare to Ann Wilson's vocals-- but it is a pretty nice cover.. please tell the girls not to move on stage-- it became comical!! Still nice job Decemberists!!

  • 3:42 OMG, Angus Young!!!

  • a tuff song 2 cover but i'm happy 2c them do it.

  • Although it's one of the better covers I've heard, I don't think the girls have the right vocal range for the song. Just my opinion based on listening to Heart for 20 years. I still love the Decemberists though.

  • @AsheyCat strongly agree

  • one of the best cover i've ever seen!

  • Ummm. Pick it apart all you want. But there is NOTHING wrong with this performance. To the contrary...they are talented group of musicians going for a joyride WAY out of their element. And the result is just pure fun. The fans at that show certainly loved it. And I did too!

  • geeks can rock too!!!

  • 4.05

    They're cyborgs. I KNEW IT.

  • Very good cover. Only weak link is the second vocalist. Out of her range. Shouldn't be though.

Are these guys a local band? On a label?

  • @TheWitchOvAgnesi They began as an indie group from Portland on Kill Rock Stars. Starting with their fourth album, The Crane Wife (2006), they signed with Capitol. Seen here, they are on their A Short Fazed Hovel tour for their fifth album, rock opera The Hazards of Love (2009), with Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) and Becky Stark (Lavender Diamond) respectively, who played characters in Hazards. If you're interested in them, a good place to start would be their album Picaresque (2005).

  • @Selunei Not so much interested in this style of music to be honest (I mean what they normally play from what I've seen so far - Heart brought me here), but I was so impressed by this that I figured it was worth the query.

And while I probably should have checked Wikipedia were I not so lazy, I certainly appreciate your detailed response. But yeah, I'll check out what you recommend and see if it grows on me.

  • 4:10 Colin Meloy, Ladies man

  • If you aren't a Decemberists fan you wouldn't appreciate this nearly as much as you should ... rock on

  • I love this band. But covering Ann Wilson is never a good idea. You cannot improve on perfection.

  • I Love This Band SOOOOOOOOO Much!!!!!!!!!! The drummer is A DRUMMING GOD!!!!!!!

  • Shara Worden has the sexiest voice.

  • @sethwantsblood Yeah for real.

  • @sethwantsblood I agree.

  • Damn, after watching this video I realized that I have bits of my brain all over the room. Fan-fukin-tastic Decemberists. Fan-fukin-tastic.

  • @kikkiokioli If you read my post, you wouldn't have had to ask. There is a difference between "different notes" and "wrong notes". They could have done a different rendition. Instead, they tried living up to the original and failing. That is, they tried duplicating it note for note and missed half of them.

  • i think maybe they need new guitarists... ones who actually know how to play the song

  • they do know that the guitar was out of tune right?.... no?.... oh ok.. then yea, it is just crappy.

  • pretty bleh if i do say so myself

  • The Decemberists own an SG?!?!?!

  • This is a fun cover, no matter what anyone here says. Glad to say I've seen them perform this live and it was AWESOME!

  • We've got 22 Gaga's fan here.

  • Becky Stark and Shara Worden are the volaists.

  • I like this band but damn, this is sad.

  • my face just melted

  • Ok sorry, but this was not that good. All of the guitar parts were wrong, it lagged, and the vocals were flat. I like this band, but they should to stick to their niche. Wait a minute... The video just got worse as I was typing this.

  • @nanooman so basically, you're asking for a note for note duplication of the original or else you won't enjoy it.

  • best cover eva

  • I almost feel dirty watching this. :)

  • hehe, sheer joy! laughing to tears at how awesome that was! Anyone getting picky about technicalities don't know how to have fun! Well done.

  • i love these guys........... but that intro was almost a damn shame....... ive your gunna cover them exactly like they are....... atleast do it right...... wish they where as good as her......

  • it sounds very good. Great performance!

  • can anyone please tell me about the female vocalists singing here? they're not a part of the decemberists, are they? or are they just instrumentalists? thx in advance

  • toooooooooooooooo goooooooooooooooooooooood!!!

  • I thought the girls were brilliant and seemed to be having fun as they were performing (amazing vocals btw) but at the risk of sounding like a dick, I could play the acoustic intro better than that.

  • that would be Colin Meloy, you probably know him as 'The Greatest Lyricist Of The Worlds History Meloy'

  • Who is the first singeR?

  • This is so tame compared to when I saw it live.

  • Saw them do this in concert. It blew my mind.

  • I love the women singing, damn fine, but I don't know their names

  • They closed the show I saw in Kansas City with this song. @Edazon92, at least when I saw them they played the entire intro that Nancy Wilson plays in the Heart version. This performance also seemed understated to me, but only because in KC Shara Worden _peeled the paint_ off the walls her voice was so awesome!

  • That's a great cover right there fans!!!

  • Their acoustic guitarist really sucks......

  • @OrgodemirDQ7 Their acoustic guitarists is one of the best songwriters of our age...listen to any of their albums and, lyrically, tell me if the Jason Derulos and Britney Spears of the world have even a pinhead's-worth of talent compared to Colin Meloy.

  • @Handslide19 Not that I don't love the Decemberists, but obviously Jason Derulos (sp?) and Britney Spears have something appealing or they wouldn't be so successful. And I don't want to be sucked into this debate, because I think music should just be enjoyed, but Nancy Wilson is an INSANE guitar player.

  • @OrgodemirDQ7 How so? He is playing this pretty spot on.

  • @Edazon92 He didn't play about half of the notes in the intro. The rest is mostly strumming. He can strum, but I mean the individual notes. It is like he left them out to make the song "his own." I am a guitarist myself and I understand that, but the things he leaves out bridges the sections of the intro. It all seemed kind of random.

  • @OrgodemirDQ7 Well it's a shortened video, the whole intro isn't even there and to be honest I'm not really hearing missed notes in what little is actually in the video.

  • @Edazon92 listen to any cover of the intro that is halfway decent. You will hear the notes. He doesn't "miss" them as in playing incorrectly. He misses them by not playing them at all.

  • Great song, but I think Heart may've done it better... Oh well, the Decemberists still rock.

  • You really need to like this band to like this band.

  • I'm embarrassed for the whole band. If you can't hack it, don't do it. I've heard bands cover this song well. And then there's this one

  • @luccyy0480 does a cover have to be exactly the same as the original? what's the point of making the bloody cover if you're just going to sing eeeeeexaaaaaactly like the original.. some improv doesn't hurt

  • @Mersadlpool I think you have a point IF you were covering a song to sell it, and trying to capitalize on selling the same song, but if you play a song in concert cause you love it, and it would be a fun change of pace, why not honor the original with a great rendition? Seems logical and their not making their own version to sell. This song was pretty awesome live. SW was amazing to hear sing, she made my jaw drop.

  • @NMAfreak i must agree with that, but the decembs are something different.. they don't play in the usual way, they had to change some things in order to make the song more playable for them, and plus, i bet none of them actually practised this song very much before the concert, they did, but not in a way to know every chord right

  • ugghhh!!!

    the guitar playing *barf*

  • there has NEVER been another female singer with a voice even remotely CLOSE to Anne Wilson's voice. it was so incredible and magnificant, that i wouldn't honestly appreciate anyone else trying to cover, or imitate a song Anne's done. regardless, those that try will have some big shoes to fill!! so keep on trying ladies!!!

  • @kittiekatchoo Agreed, although if anyone comes to mind, it would have to be Alison Mosshart.

  • this song is hard to do for females...this is awesome!!!!!!

  • 2 Decemberists < 1 Ann Wilson

  • Ann Wilson should get a free dick punch for each member of the band and an extra one for whoever's idea this was - and Nancy should get one for that acoustic intro. Fans of this band may like it but fans of Heart probably won't. Watch any of the high quality versions of this song here on youtube - this doesn't even capture the basic spirit of the song.

  • Ann Wilson should get a free dick punch for each member of the band and an extra one for whoever's idea this was.

  • why is the guy on the acoustic standing in a shadow? but I love the electric riff, its one of the things I warm up with every time i pick up my guitar

  • @yourhybridtheory, it's good that you like what they do on albums, but don't let this be your song to judge how well they do live, watch some other videos. They are epic and amazing all the time, live or recorded. Watch anything live from the hazards of love tour (probably not called that) but anything live from that album is awesome. Percussion everywhere. Absolutely fabulous in every way.

  • Jesus Christ, that guitarist is awful.

This does the Wilson's absolutely no justice.

I love what the Decemberists do in the studio, but they are far from impressive live.

  • @yourhybridtheory I'll admit that the guitar work on this particular performance of this is less than the Wilsons - but whose isn't? But you're talking out of your arse calling the Decemberists a bad live band overall. That statement is a joke.

  • SHARA WORDEN <3

  • I saw Heart live 3 times in the 70's when they were peaking.

    This is pretty cool.

  • Oh dear...

    That's all I can say.

  • This is a disgrace.

sorry Decemberists fans, but this is HORRIBLE,

  • lame ass intro im 14 i can ace that solo not swet haha

  • @Techy1996 It's a shame you can't spell, though...

  • @Techy1996 cool story bro, but its a sort of personalized version of the intro. you are probably one of those people who can play, but they cant PLAY.

  • Vocals suck so hard compared to Ann's.

  • Colin sure looks like he's having fun =D

  • not bad at all ... but Heart rules !!!!!

  • Very good, everyone in place, I even think I heard a B-3 sound out that keyboard player. Like the disco beat with the hi hats later on in the song. Like to see the drummer crash 2 cymbals at the same time. ...he's keeping perfect time.

You girls move around nice, alittle more wouldn't be bad. ...that's what keeps Mick Jagger in shape, lol. Anyways, sounds great, drummer tim andrew, naugatuck, ct

  • I saw the Decemberists play this in Portland, their hometown at a venue where Heart was playing in a few weeks. It was an awesome homage from one Northwest band to another. So much fun.

  • it's an alright cover

it's just a little to soft for my taste :)

  • Damn...solid solid cover. Just discovered the Decemberists through a buddy....great job!!!

  • Becky is so cute. She looks really shy when she's singing.

  • No one covers the acoustic part at the first..boring.

  • People paid to see this? Horrifying...singers out of tune, not sync'd and awkward. Guitarist made many mistakes and was not even close to the riffs. Wow. Ann and Nancy Wilson are pros. Please don't play their songs and hack them like this.

  • her legs.. are soooo shiny...

  • @wutuworry

    She has stokings

    :D

  • yearofsundays-" this is one of the most intense, passionate songs ever written" ?

k ,it looks to me this was just the decemberists having fun in their encore with a song they probably grew up with.i don't think they were trying to knock heart off their stratospheric perch as the greatest rock band in the history of the universe, jeez

  • I love Heart and this guys did amazing. Ann and Nancy would agree, no doubt.

There are some truly horrid covers floating around but this ain't one of them.

  • @ccipollini1984 You need a quick trip to your ear doctor!

  • @dgb111

excuse me, it's my opinion and I think they were good, so back off!

  • Long haired girl, what the hell was that ?

  • @catormis she never moves

  • She dances like 'Josie Geller' from Never Been Kissed at one point. Simply fantastic :D Amazing voices!

  • ... my god, she's so awkward.

oh but it's still a great cover.

  • Becky is so friggin cute!

  • When the hell did the Decemberists learn how to rock?

  • Man! Heart Purists sure aren't any fun. But that was great! It's a sentiment to the versatility of The Decemberists. Awesome.

  • Nice....

  • wow, They sound just like heart, great work amazing cover :O

  • meh....

  • Wow. This seems to be a very polarizing cover. A lot of people love it, a lot of people hate it. I personally like it, but I was never a hard core fan of Heart.

  • @Candypirate11 same here.

  • Wow! like the vocal trade off! Check out the SKYROCKETS from Austin version. Girl plays the guitar as well as sing the leads. Thank you HEART for the timeless song!

  • umm...not even close. But a good effort.

  • Wow, this is one of the most well done covers I have ever seen

  • @berylliumshiver Except the lead guitar...haha

  • When did Heart fans become so bitter? Jeez. This is a great cover!!

  • Brave and hilarious! living out their childhood hairbrush is a microphone fantasy.. I love it!

  • shame on you, decemberists.

  • short haired lady = very awesome..

long haired lady = very bad...

    Guitar intro= very bad...

    bassist and drumming= very solid...

    Guitarist= very decent...

    Heart playing this song= Uncomparable

  • @PedullaMan21 I agree a bit but i'm sure the singing part we both couldnt do any better :P

  • @PedullaMan21 Thats it.

  • @PedullaMan21 I DISAGREE THIS WAS JUST FOR FUN NOT SO THAT THEY WIN MORE FANS. SO FUCK OFF

  • I'm not trying to sound like an ass, but that was a pretty bad cover. The intro sucked, the lead guitar sounded like he'd never heard the original before and played random notes through the entire song. The second singer, whom I have no cares to learn the name of, has no stage presence, she couldn't hit the high notes, she prances around like the one uncoordinated girl in every high school, and at 3:07 she just looks retarded. Only the bassist, drummer, and the first singer were somewhat good.

  • the chick with the long hair kinda sucks lol

  • @twigagawizard Incorrect.

  • The real problem, is that this is one of the most intense, passionate songs ever written, and this performance has absolutely no soul. They made it silly. It's like a talent show at a Renaissance Fair.

I actually looked up the video because several friends of mine suggested I would love The Decembrists. This is a bit of a deterrent.

  • nice song

  • How fantastic is this?

  • Wish I had been there!!!

  • Shitty guitar intro doesn't do justice to the song, but singing is very good for a cover.

  • Great nod to the coolest women in rock. I am sure that A & N would appreciate this cover from a fellow NW band. Rock on!

  • damn. this is a great cover. wow.

  • Not bad at all, but nothing beats the original.

  • For all you haters, sorry that the Decemberists are smarter than your favorite band, suck it

  • @Nemomeansnoname Couldn't have said it better myself. You nailed it. Fuck you haters.

  • great preformance....check out my cover of the rake's song, also check out bland too, let me know if it sux lol

  • soooooo rad.

  • unfortunately the original pwns this

  • i agree with disgrl4 - they butchered this song.

no one can do it better then heart. i didn't even listen to this cover the whole way though...the guitr intro way WELL off aswell..

  • @ShellyHorses I bet every member of the band would be able to spell "guitar" though.

  • @neoregulus777 genuine error by me, never realised that

  • Genius! Just like everything they do!

  • this is only good, the band is good but the vocals... its tough covering something you cant beat

  • MORMON ROCK!!!! SO HOT RIGHT NOW!!!

  • long hair chick= fail

    shara = creamy trousers

  • Colin is fucking insane in this video. He's jumping around the stage like a maniac and I love it. I can't wait for them to come to chicago... unless they already did...

  • They were already there for Lollapalooza in August, and they were INCREDIBLE!

  • @Browncoat1138 they were in Chicago three times last year. I seen them do Hazards of Love start to finish at the Riviera, it was phenomenal!

  • I love The Decemberists, I love Heart, I love Crazy on you. Surprisingly I don't like this at all.

  • Comment removed

  • pero estoy en acuerdo (con frankificationify)...longhaired chick's voice is just not right for this song (awful, really). Though, to be fair, Shara would probably suck at tradit. country

  • why didn't anyone mention that shara (my brightest diamond), singin lead, isn't a decemberist...oh well, someone probably has, I'm just not gonna take the time to read all 112 comments

  • who could hate this song?

  • @tangleresilient I love the song, but I can't stand the cover.

  • so wrong and yet, so right.

  • Long haired one no bueno in this song.

  • Awesome, i was there, they rocked so hard

  • IMO, certain songs shouldn't be touched and this is one of them. Nothing can ever compare favorably with the original. I hate it when American Idol contestants take on Heart songs. Also, the two ladies are very off pitch when they hit the high notes. They are kinda cute - in an 80's sort of way - and I'd probably enjoy them otherwise, just stike this particular tune from the set list.

  • Fun!

  • man practice the intro...really bad

  • they dont care, its a fun song to play and perform...doest need to be perfect,i hate this song, but this is awsome

  • Damn I thought this was recorded in the 70s until I looked at the title better. I guess that's the look they're going for.

I think this was an awesome cover. There is only one Ann Wilson, so of course the original is the best. But I think this sounded great!

  • so it wasn't perfect! It's still fun! It still sounded good! It's still awesome! jmo

  • I didn't really like Becky when she was singing. I mean I love the Decemberists but I don't think she did a very good job for this song.

  • agreed.
