Halloween was the original New Year's. Samhain was the Gaelic word for November, and there was no ultimate god of death that release evil spirits unto the word. First of all, the Celts were not a single people, but a group of seperate groups with almost nothing in common and no common language.
Second, the word "Samhain" is the name for the celebration, not a particular god.
Third, Halloween is a Christian holiday. Catholics, in an attempt to make Catholicism more tolerable to the pagans, adopted many pagan holidays. Easter, Christmas, AND Halloween. It is basically the same as Fat Tuesday because All Saints Day comes right after Halloween on Nov 1

Bwahahahaha, What a complete load of crap. It is a Christian guys view. For one thing, Celt is pronounced with a K sound, not an S sound. He needs to get his money back from the college that gave him his degree. He is so wrong it is actually sad. One more thing, all christian hollidays are purposely celebrated at the same time as old pagan celebratiobns. The church that would become the catholic church, wanted to convert jews as well as the pagans into the christian faith. So they wanted there to be something for them to trasition into from there customs. Pagan customs mearly follow sesonal changes in nature, nothing more.

Halloween was the original New Year's. Samhain was the Gaelic word for November, and there was no ultimate god of death that release evil spirits unto the word. It was just because that was when the line between the worlds of the dead and the living were thinnest then. Bonfires and dressing up in costumes were meant to scare the evil spirits away. In a sense, the evils were the harshness of the winters to come in symbolism.
