  • this game is fucking awesome

i played this, and beat the game when i was 10 yrs old

at first, the game is really hard to get into, and understand the game mechanics, but once you figure out how to play, and get the summoning abilities, this game owns

one of the best rpg games ever

  • Played and worshiped this game as a child at launch, I now recently have downloaded it for the PC and I can see that in my youth, I had good taste. I'm absolutely loving and being engrossed by this game. The lore and writing is definitely my favorite part of the game. A gem in the rough, for sure

  • @FugaziCharon you are a living example of something I've been believing since the PS2 generation ended, and that is that those who grew up on the PS2 do not know quality lol. I'm sorry if this offends you in any way, but this game is garbage, it was garbage when I first played in years ago and it's still garbage now.

  • I never managed to get past Pjilan or whatever his name was.Too reliant on my summons i guess.XD

  • This reminds me of dragon age!

  • That guy needs to clip his finger nails

  • I used to play as the chic with the hood. I'd put the hood on to become invisible, sneak around my enemies, and backstab them. Good times, good times.

  • This was the first ps2 game I owned. I loved it. The only bad things I didnt like were load times and sometimes it was unclear where to go.

  • do the characters talk in this game?

  • @ladygodia Yep they talk..

  • this game was freaking awesome, great story and one of the best plots ive ever experienced in playing games. music was epic aswell... really bad this game never sold much... played it on pc in german lol... The demons sounded really evil :D

    good times

  • @DotaHelm the pc console was better is just in the ps2 version is is just a waste

  • The PC Version from this game is freaking great, its one of my favorites PC Games. These seems kinda slow and the graphics suffers a bit, i would say pick up the PC Version.

  • I dont see why they dont upgrade this to the new consoles, and maybe add more options to it. Still got a good story line maybe work on its background a little but still worth to play if your like into stories.

  • It might be big back then, from today's perspective it's just poorman's Dragon Age.

  • @urban22s You visited a Summoner video to say that? You're still a virgin, just a angry one. Pocket pussy's do not count my friend lol

  • this was one of the first games i had for ps2 :3 ill never forget all the nights and days i spent with my bro to finish the damn thing XD pure awesomness !

  • this is one of my all-time favorite games. the story for this game was second to none. the mythology was incredible. and the music was freakin' AWESOME.

  • Yes, it's me again! Anyway, I think your definition of underrated / overrated is wrong. You think of it as sales. If a game sells a ton that doesn't make it overrated. If a game gets good feedback when it sucks, that makes it overrated.

  • I love this game. Although I hated that sneaking mission in the castle XD

  • Great game, huge and dripping with atmosphere - I liked Summoner 2 as well

  • Is there any cheats on the game ?? PC version

  • @SlipknotRocksSIC Sorry, it doesn't matter. A good game is a good game no matter how old it is. Contra on the NES was made over 20 years ago, but still a great game. Old is nor an excuse. That's why this game fails. Funny Easter egg in the game, but game play is awful.

  • @SlipknotRocksSIC No matter if it is the first or last PS2 game, it still isn't good. There are PS1 games better than this game. A game should stand the test of time, and this one does not.

  • This was a simply awful game. Not an underrated gem IMO. Janky combat, poor framerate, and poor AI. In the light of all the other great RPGs, this one doesn't hold a candle.

  • @jedahdoma

name a rpg better than this?

  • @Tinhh mass effect :P

  • @Tinhh None except mayyyyyybe Golden sun 1&2 for gameboy advanced

  • @jedahdoma this game suffered from some clunky dialogue and controls, I agree, but the combat system and the music were excellent. the game oozed atmosphere, and these things made up for its shortcomings I think.

  • I miss this game :( That was my first ever RPG. This game have my respect forever.

  • ahhh man i miss them random encounters

  • this game was a lot of fun. when i bought my ps2 this was one of the 3 games i bought. first time through it was a hard game. everything was new and different. second time was easier because i knew what i was doing and have a better plan with my skill points. 3rd time was super ez because i read a guide and used backstab the whole time to kill EVERYTHING in a hit or 2. i never used the summons though, felt they were pretty useless. funny, a game called summoer and i didn't use the summons

  • One of the first games I got for the PS2. I remember both loving Lenelle for being both large and lively, and frustrating due to getting consistently very, very lost (the map became my best friend).

Of course, remembering this, I have been inspired to start another game of it...

  • yeah, same here. it was cool because i never played a game with such a big city in it. it was interesting, but like you said frustrating because you would get lost so easily. or it would be a hastle to go there to talk to a person, just to have to go right back out, that could take over 10 minutes.

  • This game had an awesome soundtrack. the music set the mood for me

  • Definitely one of the best games I ever played, but I would have really loved if you could keep playing after you finished the story, see the world returned to itself, or even just wander around as it was.

  • i remember playing this game. i fought bosses like this: i paused the game, opened my inventory and used a lot of spell tablets on them. :D

  • I just bought this game at a flea-market today. I loved the sequel; I can't wait to play this one!

  • Was this not a launch or near-launch title for the PS2? Fun times, though the sequel was definitely better. The guy who used martial arts attacks... awesome.

I wouldn't consider either a classic though as I don't think they've really stood the test of time. Unlike, say, the Baldur's Gate series on PC.

  • by the way, the d&d video in the credits is hilarious!

  • This was the first rpg that I bought for ps2. it was one of my favorites. after losing my ps2 and the game, I spent a few years looking for it, describing it to people. Nobody knew about it. Recently I've found the pc version for download. and Ive been sucked back in again. Those who find this should get it. Summoner is a collectors item that is definately overlooked.

  • It's a fun game, for sure.

However, I think Summoner 2 was leagues better in every way.

  • If you like ths you might want to try Neverwinter Nights 1&2 and Dragon Age Origins. If you don't mind 2d there is also Baldurs Gate 1 & 2 (not dark alliance the PC games)

  • I do need to go back and play a lot of the older PC games that I missed. I never had a PC growing up, so I missed out on a lot of great PC games.

  • Yep alot of the greatest games were for the pc , and not alot of people hear about them. I hear the Gothic series is pretty good (3rd was taken rather badly), and Risen that just came out is also good (tried it myself). There is the Witcher too(I haven't finished it yet). Yep lots of games and it would take a while to name them all.

  • @teh2Dgamer Luckily I have kept evry PC game I have bought since the early 90's! Over 600 Big box and DVD boxes on my shelves!

  • @HardWarUK How do you get them all to run? Some old PC games I own, won't run from crap on a newer OS. Dosbox? Or do you have older computers running older OS's?

  • @teh2Dgamer See my message I posted to myself accidentally!!

  • @HardWarUK Ok cool. I have Dosbox, but am really not sure how to use it, but what's virtual PC? Some of my older games run great on XP (which is what I run on my home computer), but others either don't run, or run horribly. The original Alien vs Predator on the PC bogs down to 1 frame per second at times, and is nearly unplayable. Quake, and Unreal, however, still run great. Unreal takes a little more tinkering, but the entire Quake series has no issues.

  • @teh2Dgamer Virtual PC is a free utility from Microsoft that simulates a older PC, but you have to 'install' an OS like Win95 or Win98. You can get these old Operating Systems for $10 or so on the web, and after setting up Virtual PC and installing, say Win 98, you have a fully working 10 year old win98 PC inside your XP modern PC! You install a game into it in exactly the same way and if the Virtual PC is powerful enough to run it, you will have a working win95/win98 game!

  • @HardWarUK Wow, thanks for the info man. I'll have to look into that when I get back to AZ.

  • @HardWarUK DOSBox for the older DOS games and Virtual PC running Win98SE for the Win95/Win98 games that aren't happy with XP or fast PC's. Quite a few run in XP with VDMSOund and some just run in XP without any problem. Some work but just need a slowdown program like CPUGrabber to slow the PC down.... There are the odd game, like Star trek Generations that won't run the cutscenes in XP, but the game runs fine, or in Virtual PC, where the cutscenes work, but the game is choppy!

  • I remember seeing this at Babbages (now LameStop) in 2002. It was 7.99 for PC. Didn't expect much out of it.

Next thing i knew, i was up until 5a.m playing online during summer vacation.

  • after watching this vid, i tried out this game for about half an hour... but i just cant seem to get into the game! i didnt get "sucked in" at all

  • Boy I sure did. I guess you've gotta have a taste for it.

The game does have it's annoyances for sure. The load times are a big one. It's kinda slow going at first too.

  • I remember the first time I beat Pijian... Flece and Rosalind were both dead and I was Joseph and on my own... I just kept running away from him and healing myself.

    GOD, i love this game.

  • My frav game ever! Came with my ps2 years ago and played it for 10 mins and didn't like it. Then tried it again a few months later and realy got into the story line, plot and characters and couldn't stop playing it. I'd rather give up all my ps3 games including my frav, call of duty 4, than this game lol

  • u eva played second summoner both great games

  • Yep. I actually played the second before I played the original. I've even got an underrated gems vid for the sequel up as well.

  • Finally another person who likes this game as well as me this was the first game I got when the ps2 came out in the uk, still as good as ever.

  • I got this game ages ago, but long after launch. I remember it being absolutly awful.

  • I think it looks good for a launch game. And the models look great too

  • the combat style reminds me of knights of the old republic, and in terms of graphics ive honestly seen much worse looking games on ps2 after the release year than this

  • I've got a good amount of RPGs in my PS2 collection, but I've had a falling out with them. IMO Final Fantasy VII is when RPGs started to die. The whole genre has lost it's charm, and instead of charm. They've become a little too overdone in the storyline elements. For some reason I really haven't been able to play a lot of 3D RPGs.

I like storylines in my RPGs, but when everything's trying to be an epic overproduced ordeal, it gets a little old. Sometimes it's better to keep things simple

  • You can thank Final Fantasy VII for that

  • I like FFVII, but unlike most RPG fans, it wasn't my first RPG, and though it skyrocketed the genre into space, it also made for future more mainstream style RPGs without any charm, and that were watered down.

  • I'm okay with that

I won't flame you for liking something that I don't like

Heck, even I can enjoy FF7 if I ignore the story and influence it had on the franchise and gaming as a whole

  • gave ya 5 stars. :D and ill sub too

  • I think this video would be twice as good with a little commentary.

  • I let the gameplay speak for itself. There is absolutely nothing more annoying then trying to watch some gameplay of a game, and having some ***hole ruin it for you by running his mouth throughout the vid.

I don't have the equipment for commentary, and I know better than to think that anyone wants to hear my voice.

  • No no, you are right teh2Dgamer. No commentary is needed at all. The gameplay totally speaks for itself, and besides, when it is a game I have never heard/seen before, I want to be able to hear all the sound effects and stuff.

  • Screw commentary. Besides, you want comments, check out the huge text besides the video. He didn't type all of it for fun.
