I am a student of De La Riva and he puts the far foot on the hip all the time, it is a great control point, though not the only one. One thing that could be addressed in a follow up video is breaking grips before passing. I have seen many videos about passing the DLR guard when the opponent has only his legs in place. When a DLR/open guard player has powerful and strategic grips as well as foot placement, a lot of the passes that are shown become MUCH more difficult, in my experience.
@LionPrideBJJ grips dont usually matter for this pass, defending it is not grip based it is hip based, i just watched a black belt i wont mention beat two de la riva backbelts using this pass. just sayin'
@kenprimo Wait, that's impossible! Everyone knows DLR "backbelts" are not only extremely good-looking, but invincible! ;) I use this pass frequently myself, it is a great method of defeating the DLR hook, and I agree that defending the pass once it has begun is hip based, not grip based. My point is simply that initiating this pass (or any other, really) against a well-established open guard game usually requires the top man to break grips and acquire posture... (cont.)
@kenprimo In your vid, you begin with a tall posture and both of your hands free. If the top man is able to start from there, fantastic. If not, a few things have to happen before he can leg drag. I know you know this; I just think there are some people out there that might not. In any case, please stop showing everyone how to pass the DLR guard. ;)
This a really crappy De La Riva. I have never seen anybody put their foot on the person's hip. You are suppose to put your foot on their knee and your toes are suppose to be pointing away from the guy's body.
@Kubrickswookie no dude , you only move ur leg to their knee/toes the moment your sweeping . otherwise it will be too easy to defend. if you place your legs on the toes ,i'll simply move my leg back and step over . and if on my knee ill step to the side and shove ur leg between my knees. leg on the hip means control!
are u putting pressure to his left leg with your right leg as you pass the guard? And also, will it be harder if he grabbed your right ankle while you're passing?

the best jiu jitsu is SIMPLE ! nice stuff !!
but usually when ppl do de la riva, they got a good grip on one of your sleeves, i think that stops your technique...
