The way these comments are displayed is confusing to me! I thought it was doubled! Actually i was a bit worried i offended you. Some people can be touchy on the subject of Miles Davis. However I agree with you. I think miles' strongest gift was his focus on simplicity. His sound was as uncluttered as his music. Certainly modern musicians in general should be looking at that. I appreciate the care in your responses. I'm moving into NY this week. I look forward to catching your group.
@sfbassist - thanks for listening, and thanks for your comment. it was intentional. i was looking for a more expansive, open & airy sound than a traditional quartet sound, but i still wanted to use a chordal instrument on certain things. monder's playing lends itself to this anyway, and yes, he's quite definitive wherever he is, but ben street & jeff are also sensitive listeners with distinctively 'open' sounds; it worked out mostly because of the immense musicianship of all three guys.
@taylorhaskins, You get all the harmony you need without the density of a piano. Its a very interesting approach. I wonder if you might tackle one more question?
This may seem naive.... But is the "Miles Comparison" unavoidable when hearing new horn players? I don't think you sound like him, nor that you are trying to. Somehow I find myself listening for his sound with trumpet players. Yet other instruments seems less "hero-sentric". Is it something miles did? Or is it a trumpet character?
@sfbassist it's something miles did. no trumpet player will ever escape it, and really shouldn't. we all need to forge our way through it, because he simply revealed to us the true role & nature of the trumpet in modern times. it's far too deep for me to go on about here, but it hope that makes some sense...
