@bedsitsongbird33 Thank you....I had been toying with this one for a short while before I recorded it (mainly because I couldn,t get the vocal how I wanted it) but the guitar (1964 gibson j50) plays and records like an absolute dream.....Roy harper Eh???? hmmm I love Roy harper stuff......thanks...Kev
@onewomanandsomesongs Thank you again Janet..... I love this song and I tried my hardest to get the vocals somewhere near to the original (but without any great success).....but I enjoyed myself doing it.......kev
Thanks again Gus......I love the original of this song....I also love the guitar I played it on....1964 Gibson J50 .....I really struggled to get the vocal anywhere near to how I really wanted it to sound...but I guess most of us are never truly satisfied with our version of someone else,s song (mostly because we do too much comparing).....Kev
Nice and regarding the advice , just can say that didn't noticed any timing mishaps but let me tell you that guitar sounds excellent and very a- la Stills, real fine
Really like your version of his Chapman classic and the pictures conjure up the darkness of this piece.I`ve seen Mike play this many times live and he always plays it slightly different.
If you get the chance to see him live it`s well woth it....he`s just turned 70 a few days ago and still tours the uk /states and europe, check out his website for dates.
@samkeziah Thanks Brian ... I haven,t seen Michael live for years but I,ve always liked his stuff...I look forward to hearing your version my friend...Kev
Very nice piece Kev ,, a couple of disturbing pictures here & there ,, but it kept me captivated until the end ,, watched it 2 times now so you must have something good going on here ,, cheers ,, dave :)
@reprac9 Thanks Dave ...I enjoyed doing it...I was just trying to fit the pictures to the song.....some of them worked others I,m unsure ..but it helps me to learn how to use moviemaker....thanks again my friend...Kev
Managed to get here, finally! Glad I did anall'. I know you say you 'arent sure about the overall sound'; but from someone who *isnt* that familiar with Chapmans stuff..this sounds top-notch, to me. I mean both vocally and guitar wise. The *sound* is good quality imo- but I have the 'benefit' of 'original ignorance'. And its natural *you're* going to hear the errors (you say exist- I can't detect) Im the same on my stuff. BTW- did u realise that last pic- means Elvis is alive and well in Hull?
@ianmcgeachy Cheers auld lad...It was Harry Lansdownekid who got me started on this and indeed pointed me in the right direction with guitar playing...but I,m comparing it to the original which flows beautifully and not disjointed like this version...I took the picture of Elvis when he was pissing off with our lass on the back of the Harley...(cheeky bastard brought her back again said "thankyuverymuch but he couldn,t cope with the nattering))
@sbbinahee Thanks Paul..... I wish I could do it a tenth as good as the original (but I,m getting too bloody old to sit practicing these days....if I can,t get it somewhere near in a couple of run-throughs I usually discard it but I like this song so I did spend a bit of time trying to get the vocal right (because I don,t posses a naturally great voice like you do)...thanks again mate...all the best ..Kev
Excellent stuff Kev ~ Love the Guitar picking on this ~ your voice is perfect for this song....... Great video as well ~ Superb sound quality ~ A great start for the new year (Happy new year Kev) ~ Your pal Geoff
@williheckaslike Thanks Geoff ...I struggled to get the vocal right-ish and the guitar timing is a bit dodgy here and there but I just wanted to get a workable version to play live as and when the opportunity arises...The original is fantastic ...you can listen to it n the Michael Chapman website.....all the best mate...Kev
This is very good, I agree with karlake about the jansch/ beefheart sound and I would love to hear you do gimme dat harp boy, can you play a harmonica? I was hoping for more electric stuff when you did the bo diddley cover but you seem to have gone back to the acoustic again (although I do like acoustic stuff).Chris
@TheJohnmartynfan Thank you Chris, I have thought about gimme dat harp and yes I can play the harmonica 9well good enough to suit me anyway) ........I intended doing more electric stuff but my gear isn,t permanently set-up so its a bit of a bind setting it all up before I record (I usually lose interest in recording by the time I have got it all set-up.......with acoustic all I do is plug in the mic and interface and off I go (although sometimes I do use a pre-amp as well).......kev
Great cover of a great song! Very nice picking on the guitar and the talk-singing is perfect! It sounded a bit like Bert Jansch meets Captain Beefheart, and that would be something. Was it recorded on "reaper", great sound! Absolutely great! -karl
@karlake2 Thanks Karl,,,that is a great compliment for me because they are 2 of my favourite musicians (I was sorry to hear the captain recently died)....I have been meaning to attempt a beefheart cover for months maybe "gimme dat harp boy" or "sure nuff and yes I do".....and yes I recorded it in reaper ...a single take for guitar and vocals then another vocal track at the end on top just for effect ..Have you tried it yet?
@bpvdd ...Thank you Bernard...it turned out better than I expected (even though the guitar work is a little "patchy") it can use a bit more work I think....Kev
Hey, Kev. Really great job and don't worry about the lack of gravel - there's loads here. Sounds spot on to me and loads deeper than us nancy-boy tenor types can reach. You'll be gigging down the costa again soon I guess.
Beats me how you got that pic of me and my two mates at 4.26 , though. Obviously, I didn't clock you otherwise I'd have waved. Thumbs and regards.
@raffaport Thanks Graham ...this is the first version I did that didn,t make me sound like the singing nun...and the sooner I,m back in the sunshine the better I will like it.... I did let onto you when I took that picture but I think you were too pissed to notice and you did have a "sticky bag" in your hand at the time ...but you certainly scrubbed up well for the new video ..the transformation is amazing
@Lansdownekid Thanks Harry ..its mostly down to you that I have played with this at all ...If you hadn,t tabbed it I possibly may not have bothered .....I was going to add a vote of thanks to you in the description but our lass had my dinner ready just as I was writing the description....but I intend to correct that forthwith....Thanks for everything...all the best...kev
@mvo5720 That is nice of you to say so Mike ...but I just can,t get my head around the overall sound of it... I suppose I,m comparing it to the original and my chances of getting anywhere near Chapman,s version are very remote indeed.....especially the voice cos he sounds like he eats gravel for lunch washed down with a quart of bourbon and a couple of cuban cigars
@normaninhell Now then me auld mucker...still alive then? ...hows the album going?? We could get the Cementhouse sessions up and running again ...I,m still waiting for the tapes from the last one .. I could have done with a bit of input from a man of your vast experience is it worth working on or not???? ...Anyway you don,t live far from Chapman now. I could always do with your voice adding to a song or three and perhaps a bit of Harp? I was gonna ring you but can,t remember why
You are awesome! Truly. :)
