Terrific. Frank and Tim could never get Moses Gunn's character to confess though they believed him to be guilty. It turned out that no one was ever convicted for the murder of the little girl which happens in real life homicides. Extremely well-written and acted police drama.
Just re-watched this episode on DVD for first time in 10 years. Even more intense than I remembered. Incredible acting from all three men. And this case would continue to haunt poor Bayliss for the length of the series. I love the sequel episode "Requiem for Adena" in the 4th season.
It's a shame that NYPD Blue got all the attention in the early 90s because Homicide was so much better -- the writing, acting, and character development was so much better.
This episode is particularly great, deservedly winning an Emmy (and I think a lot of other awards) for Tom Fontana, who basically ran the show throughout its run (until he left to do Oz and the show slipped).
It's impossible to put this groundbreaking and TV making episode on a sliding scale but it stands with a small handful of dramatic episodic's best. I might also include Star Trek's The City on the Edge of Forever and Mad Men's The Carousel, a few others. But Adena, which so artfully envelopes several awful real life events and sets the tone for such a superior series -- watched it many times and it always puts me on edge and deflates me but always leaves me thinking about morailty at play.
well i do have a question. since you know Homicide,,what song is played at the end of the homicide movie-the scene involved G passing thru the squad room with Adina dancing around him, he joins a poker game with deceased cops......do you know?
Ther song that plays over the closing montage is Smashing Pumpkins' "Crestfallen". I'll have to look at the earlier scene to see if that's what you're indicating.
i remember watching HLOTS when it originally aired in 1993 to 1999 and thinking it was probably the best tv drama I had ever seen. They've been rerunning it on cable lately and I just caught "Three Men and Adena" last night. Amazing. Sad that Moses Gunn (who played the suspect) died 9 months later.
Do you think the suspect did it? If so, I think it was an accident. He truly loved that little girl.
this was a good one but the one with the two mothers in the waiting room having no idea that one one son killed the others son is the best.......that or the one with robin williams
Oh man, I had forgotten how much I loved the original opening credits. They weren't flashy or Hollywoodish, but they were artistic and kinda creepy. Little details like that made the show awesome.
I think along with OZ, Homocide are the greatest TV drams ever. I can see why The Wire is lauded as such by others, but for me I have to agree with gillianseed as brilliant as it is I some times find myself bored and my mind wanders somwhere else when I am watching it. It dosent grab you by the balls in the same way Homocide and Oz did. That Homocide was network tv restraints, and still managed to reach this level of brillince says a lot.
thanks for posting, what a series, i still remeber the first time i saw this episode. I knew this series was going to be good from the begining, some of the episodes were very controversial yet some were very funny and some like this one were very sad, this is by far the best drama series i ever saw. I'm getting all of the episodes on dvd for my personal gift this christmas.
the final season was nbcs fault but still had a ton of awesome stuff

According to Wikipedia, *real* police units use this episode of Homicide to train detectives in methods of interrogation! How cool.

Btw for anybody who wants to know, the song playing at the beginning (on the TV) is "Surround" by Bleach! :)

This show was terrific for 6 of its 7 seasons. The final season was a sellout.

You disagree? I welcome conversation, especially about so potent a piece of drama.

The song that plays oover the final montage in the TV movie is Crestfalen by Smashing Pumpkins. Is that what you are referring to?

Those are decent episodes, but the absolute best has to be "Colors" from Season 3.

hlots is just as good as the wire, it was just under network tv restraints, the same people who made homicide are making the wire

Homicide:Life on the street is the best cop show ever.

i beg to differ. the wire is the best cop show.

Sometimes I actually find the Wire rather boring within some context compared to the quick-tempered cinematography Homicide carried.
Both are AWESOME shows though.

The Wire is not just a cop show even though I agree it is better. But let's not forget HLOTS was on NBC while the Wire was on the more open on HBO.
