This is good if you don't have Photoshop or Sony Vegas. 3ds Composite feature is not as powerful as those 3rd apps, but it's good enough for amateurs like me, plus I have more control over the composition of 3D graphics rather than just images.

Firstly you can't really compare it to photoshop because this specializes in video not still images, secondly sony vegas is for editing, not a compositor so it wouldn't be anywhere near as good. Yeah, I got it. It's really nice. I think though some features are disabled for student version, cause my friend said for AutoCAD student version, there are some features disabled. So I'm assuming the same for 3Dmax.

@TCzelusniak This is basically the same kind of tool as After Effects but it focuses more heavily on film workflows like dealing with massive resolutions and High dynamic range footage from end to end of a compositing pipeline.

@11newells The two products do different things. Matchmover is specifically for tracking moving shots of live footage and feeding back camera and scene data to 3ds max. COmposite is for putting together the final shot including CG footage and live action.

I must say, we tried this software for several months. Found many limitations in the software. Mainly the ability to see parts of the UI since they are hidden under various locations.

No modern compositor works in the workflow composite is providing. For real power and ease of use do yourself a favor and check out Nuke or Fusion. Even houdini (an FX tool) has better composting and ease of use. Nice try Autodesk, put kill the dead horse.

But it lacks if you don't know how to code, skin, or make models for it, in which case youll have to find sites with things you can download for it.

@steamisM50 Sorry Im kinda new to all this stuff. I've used Vue 8, before but not 3ds max or Maya. I've heard a lot of movies are going to Maya not 3ds max but Maya is harder to use. I want to go to school for animation im 15 years old now.

What do you recomdend starting out on? I've had some practice with animation on other programs and i've used both but 3ds max I new what i was doing but Maya I didnt. If i were to start 3ds max would maya be an easy switch?

As for which is better to learn, I started with 3DS max, and got real well at it, and now, after watching random training videos, learning a few hotkeys, Maya was EXTREMELY easy for me to pick up, because I knew all the modeling practices already.

Reason movies pick Maya over 3DS max, is being Maya has a better workflow for animation than Max, but they are closing the gap.

I am as well 15, and started when I was 13.

@Clambercty Also,choosing among the 2 programs(there's more) is up to your preference.If you feel more comfortable with one than the other,you may want to go for that one.I use 3DSMAX and I've found it very easy to use once you get passed the basics.
