GREAT video ( now a lie of course ) and btw I waited just last night at MIA for a friend's Delta flight from Atlanta that was supposed to be in originally at 9pm, he landed at 12:25am...they suck.

If NWA wasn't bought buy Delta, they would've been bankrupt anyway, they were THIS close! I love NWA too and will always be my favorite American airlines, but Delta didn't kill people, they just bought a troubled company in order to expand. That's business, and airlines goes under that category. I agree Delta should have NWA's logo somewhere on the plane but it's not like they're criminals, they saved the employees at NWA by buying their troubled company.
@kakajax The thing is, it wouldn't have even been that hard. Have the Delta widget rotated 60 degrees, and suddenly it's the triangle pointing to the northwest. This is better than the final nwa livery that pointed to the northeast half the time.
It's just so heartbreaking. I have rode this airline since I was a small child. I never thought that it would have fallen. I just found out that Northwest Airlines is no more ;( I always drew NWA Aircrafts. The sun will never set on Northwest Airlines.
Yeah NW is gone sadly but whenever I see a Delta plane with N---NW or NB or US I know under that delta skin is something more majestic... Godspeed NWA and Thanks for your amazing service!
Hello from an ex Olympic Airways cockpit crew, we had the pleasure of having 6 of NWA's B720's,look at 2.03, back in the 70's, bought by Onassis second hand....good times....
remembering a few pillot names that brought and flew the planes in Greece until our own people were trained...cpt Landis ,Jimmy Towell, and many others .Excellent airmen with tremendous amount of humor....
Northwest will be remembered, among other things, for its pioneering flights across the North Pacific to Asia. Seattle was kind of a "second home" to Northwest as it was the starting point for many of those trans-Pacific services, not just to Asia but also to Hawaii.
Airlines, In a few years i plan to fly along side my dad for Delta airlines. And carry on the Northwest airlines tradition. Because northwest airlines will never die. It will live on through its people who worked so hard for so many years. Long live Northwest airlines.
My grandfather and father both flew for Northwest airlines. A few weeks ago me and my grandpa were walking through Minneapolis St. Paul airport, we sat in our seats waiting for our plane. I looked at him and i saw tears in his eyes. I asked him what was wrong. He said it is not the same, not seeing the red tails anymore. That it is almost like a part of him left when Northwest Airlines left. I have never seen a man with more passion for the company he worked for. My father now flies for delta...
In the 70's and NW had a root between Newark and Norfolk. I remember a sun burst logo on their planes then. I was standing in the aisle bent over talking to a relative and they were ready to get under way. The stewardess passed by grabbed my ass and kept walking.I looked behind me quickly and a sailor was hiding his face deliberately because he didnt want me to think he was the culprit. I was 20 something and sexual harassment was not an issue. It was an education! Thanks NW!
@MFfan310, I agree. Northwest also a great working partnership with KLM, and that partnership lives on, too, as KLM works with Delta in many parts of the U.S.
My first time on a plane was a Northwest Orient B-377 Stratocruiser (the double decker you see in the video) in July 1957. Travelled 21,000 miles in Northwest Stratocruisers. Also was on Northwest Orient DC-6B, DC-7C, Lockheed L-188 Electra, Boeing 720B and then more modern planes...to over 2 million travel miles. Will miss Northwest
Yep! Owned our own Aircraft and Facilities! Paid Cash! Insulated from everything but greedy Executives and their leveraged buyouts! Makes me sick! And then all the Bankruptcy Court did is give them a fresh start at another Compay to ruin
I miss the red tail, and how the pilots would give out little plastic wings. this is the airline i grew up with, as i live in its hub in minneapolis st paul. Now i hate delta. don't buy tickets from delta. Use AirTran or American, but not delta!!!!
I grew up in NYC hearing the call of the Gong in their radio ads...and never planning on it, I wound up working for them as a young man, leaving after 19+ years. Breaks my heart to think that through fancy financing, they were "bought" with their own money, and the Red Tail flies no more.
Northwest airlines was the main reason I wanted to be a pilot. I always had a smile going through any airport and seeing the distinctive red tail among any aircraft. Northwest will always be my favorite, no matter what. Northwest will always be missed. I -3 NWA
I believe this video is from one of the northwest managers meetings I attended, a couple weeks before merger announcement. Will always miss NWA, Delta is absolutely horrible to it's employees and passengers.
I have some great memories of Northwest, including one of the first commercial flights I can remember (just after I turned 5), my first (and only) 747 trip, two of five trips to Europe, our first (of what would become 11) trips to Puerto Rico, the first trip to Florida after our family bought a new vacation home there...all on the red tail.
One of the greatest airline vids around! Thanks so much for posting it!
NWA took me around the world some 11 times before it merged. Still miss the red tail every time I fly across the Atlantic and onwards. Somehow, Delta is not the same...
Fargo North Dakota is not the same its sad to see the red tails gone and a great gruop of employees who have been replaced by contractors who care nothing for there job.
Thank you all my great friends from NWA. Our worldwide partnership has been the greatest in my carreer til so far. The fantastic combination of Red and Blue will always will be in my vains. It will never fade, it will never die. We were the pioneers of that unique Transatlantic Alliance.
Even know I'm from Delta, I feel so sad that NWA is no longer. However we now make a great team. The NW agents were a great addition to our team. Welcome to all NWA employees! Not all cities are merged yet, but in TPA, we've merged and we're one big happy family!
I've never flown NWA. But since I'm a child, I fly Air France to Tokyo many times a year. And each time I arrived into Narita airport, I could see dozens of these red tails, and for more than a decade, I could feel the power emaning from NWA, even though I've never flown them. Each time I left Japan, I used to go to the observation deck of Narita's Terminal 1 at early night, and I enjoyed watching NWA jumbos.
And I will miss them forever since they're a part of my memories, my childhood.
Delta has no respect for the people who worked for Northwest Airlines and the people who frequently traveled on Northwest Airlines. What I mean is, they have nothing in the livery that really resembles any part of NWA! No nothing! I mean, the UsAirways and America West merger kept AWE and the callsign Cactus. CO and the United merger will have the name United and the logo of CO. But nothing, nothing at all to resemble a little bit of NWA. Delta is horrible!
@PilotX95 on the contrary, i flew a northwest flight with my brother once and the ppl were very nice and helped us get to our gate (Now granted, I'm not a human GPS system who knows her way around an airport and gets very nervous around crowds easily. i'm disabled. my brother seemed to know his way around sort of...i had to sway him to "pull over and ask for directions" b/c he kept leading us in the wrong direction but with the help of a kind NWA crew member we were lead in the right direction)

@PilotX95 I completely agree. All I can say is this: When the anniversary of the merger comes, they sure better bring back the old livery on a few planes. I would especially like to see it at MSP
I will miss the red tail - I still remember when I was a kid 1970´s to 1980´s NWA was a regular visitor in HAMBURG/Germany .... I was so impressed by their beautiful colorscheme and this huge 747! They are history now but they will live on in my memories....
@ie210 my valuable assets you mean unions and debt? then yes. delta is a non-union company. still is. northwest was union. they had an election for union or non union. the employee's of both voted non-union. pan am was bankrupt and and delta bought them. delta paid off all of their debts, both domestically and international. so by doing that, delta deserved the right to paint over pan am's livery. think twice before you speak of facts you do not know about.
unless your a DL employee, ill shut up. Delta was non-union until the merger with NW. Then everybody was unhappy with the union and voted against it. No, there was no election, they overthrew the union. Then Delta fought and cut employee bennies. And delta did pay off their debts, TO GAIN PA'S ASSETS. company takeovers are not charities events in which one company pays off another guy's debt. They occur so that they can take whatever good is left of the two companies.
@ie210 true, no election was held. i was just using layman's terms. you seem to be knowledgeable in the situation. about the pan am thing, i was attempting to make the most positive outcome of the situation known. You're right about the assets, but it is what comes with bailing someone out of bankruptcy. by the way, i am the son of a DL employee. i dont know 100% of whats doing on, but i know more than the average person. i just try to defend delta because people seem so quick to hate on them.
@ie210 I like delta because I tell them I have 40 year employee seniority and they treat me very well. :) plus I have a lot of patience when I fly standby. Honestly my favorite airline was continental. I'm a little saddened by the fact they merged with united. I haven't had great experiences with their gate agents in o'hare.
One time a Delta plane landed on a taxiway at Atlanta and one time a Delta Plane tried to takeoff with one engine because they forgot to start the other!
Delta sure does a great job at covering this kind of stuff up...
at 2:56, it sounds like that lady is about to cry! Man, I miss sitting at Milwaukee Airport and looking at E Concourse for all those Red tails! NWA had the whole E concourse, so it was fun to sit there and just watch all those amazing red tails! I truly wish i had a chance to fly them, but I never will now. I miss their Boeing 757's flying in, but now its just the Airbus's and Boeing 737's.......I miss you NWA! I truly miss your Red Tail at KMKE!!!!!
Good job Steenland! It only took you roughly 5 years to assassinate a once proud airline that took nearly 80 years to build. You sir, are one fine leader of men and women. All sarcasm aside, you are an embarrassment.
I just wanna say that I interact with flight crews from Pinnicle Airlines which is party of NWA our of Memphis TN frequently and they have to be the most rude and threatening people I have ever delt with. I would take my comments to NWA directly but it would effect the business that I am in. The Minneapolis crews are very friendly and kind but the Memphis people are true bastards.
All I can say about that is the MEM crews have been in limbo since the NWA-RC merger. They probably see the proximity to ATL and feel threatened again. They are great people in MEM and I wish them the best. Now we are feeling the squeeze-out in MSP. I can relate. Good luck all.
I am a NWA employee who is now with Delta and this honestly chokes me up sometimes lol. NWA was great and though a lot of us do not agree with what has happened. Like the video said this airline will live through the people that have made it one of the greatest. True the name of Northwest is no longer around, but the people of Northwest will remain and keep the new Delta going just as strong and make it better than it ever was. We just have to have the faith.
@VFA103JollyRogers good union yes i was nw now i am dl and we are going to do everything to get the union in 2 delta cuz with out union delta is gonna suck it does suck already
@X46RAPTOR Well, now Continental and United are going to merge, but this will be different, it will use the Continental logo but say United Airlines on the side.
I just realized something. At 0:25 The First Officer looks alot like my grandpa when he was younger. I'm not totally sure but i will have to check with him and see. I am looking at a picture of him and they look almost the same
We can thank Regan for many things Sadamm, WMD's, and the end of NWA. Its' called deregulation. Keep voting republican and quit the crying. NWA management and unions sucked anyways!
I flew for Western Airlines. It was a dark day when Delta took us over. Flying was never the same again. My career was 31 years. The good years were with Western. I was never so happy to take off a uniform as I was after my last flight. Good luck Northwest! Good luck AFA. Go UNION!
Goodbye northwest. I still think that they should have kept northwest's name during the merger. It really sucks to see such a great airline go. NW is the reason i wanted to become a pilot. My grandpa flew with them for 30 years. He says everytime he is in the airport and dosent see any more red tails he gets choked up. Thank you northwest for doing all you have done to help the aviation industry you will be missed.
It was a great career!! Spent nearly 2 decades at F.Att. for NWA. Great memories when flying still was a privilege and a thrill.. THanks for this video
Good Bye Northwest Orient! Another Great Airline passes away due to Wall Street Greed! Join Eastern and Pan Am in knowing you will never be forgotten! Good Bye Red Tail! What a wonderful final tribute! Well done to those responsible for this video!
Even though Northwest (as an airline brand and operating certificate) will be no more after December 31st, I have always had a soft spot for the "red tail".
With their 80+ years of history behind them, Northwest's place in the history books as one of the legendary American air carriers will forever be assured. The brave actions of the crew of Northwest Flight 253 were a fitting close to this great airline.
As the video says, the sun truly will never set on Northwest Airlines.
Northwest Airlines was a great airline for management. They would board managers and their families before old time employees could even think of getting on an airplane. And, with Northwest, they let their managers know that they were, truly, a superior species to the rank-and-file. Delta Airlines has this egalitarian thing going on that is sickening. What's the matter with honest elitism?
I never did like the term merger. This was an acquisition pure and simple. The sun will set on NWA in two weeks. I will personally miss the Red tail. Goodluck to all those affected by the "Merger".
@tomcatpilot1 Amen to your respects to TWA. I was born & raised in St. Louis up until I was 16 & if we flew anywhere it was on TWA. TWA was one of the best airlines ever to take to the skies, IMHO. Customer service was king. If only that gutless corporate raider Icahn hadn't destroyed TWA from the inside before he cut & run. I miss TWA tremendously & I know that there will be many who'll miss not seeing NWA aircraft flying as well. Take care.
HAHAHHAHAA....Or Dont bother too pick up a bag after it fell out of a cart..but the dirver behind him will get it..oh wait, NVM..maybe the other driver will!!!!
I worked for Delta from 1998-2008 and loved it. Took a package when they started offering them to pursue a new career (kept my flight benefits though). I still have moments that I miss working for the big "D". But, I still keep in touch with my Delta family. Good times and GREAT airline. I hope NWA employees will be as happy with their new family as I was. It's sad I know. But Delta really is good to work for.
One of the GREATEST aviation ICONS in history. 82 years of pioneering aviation around the world. Expert professionals.
It is too bad that money grubbing dirty lawyers took hold of this great company. These people are nothing less than enemies of all that is great in America.
The Great RED Tail's greatness shall NEVER dim! (no matter what they call it's new company)
Trust me NWA is Still NWA. The call sign is Still NWA.. and if you look Carefully on the newly painted planes, under the registration number it says " Operated by Northwest Airlines"..
I used to own my own business jet, but with a 3 hr range, getting to Asia was out of the question, used NWA and loved it. One day while landing in NRT from a trip to BKK I sat in back of a flight attendant who was from Seoul, she was facing me. We talked ... It happened! I gave her my card and begged he to call, that was in 1984. She called, 6 kids, four grand kids and 24 years later, Just the light of our lives, my beautiful little flight attendant from NWA. We plan to fly into the sun !
Check the public records....money was exchanged; therefore an aquistion was in place. Delta purchased NWA with NWA money. Thank Mr Anderson and Mr. Steenland.
As a former TWA Flight Service Manager, I used to fly on NW to MSP alot to visit home! The f/a's were very friendly, the gate agents were very funny, and basically NWA was THE airline of Minnesota! I'll miss NW deeply! I don't fly DL at all. I'm an Amtrak guy now. GOD BLESS NW!!! You will always be a part of minnesota and my heart! :)
I've flown NWA for 20 years..... I will always use my NWA gold tags til the end! Delta S^^^s!!! breeze way please!
I will miss NWA just like TWA!!!
I would like to thank all the Gate agents at Northwest and esp MCO!! even tho you will wear their colors we will all know your Northwest.... by the service you have given all of us over the years!!! Thanks again!!! NWA Loyal Customers!!
Beautiful video, got a little choked up. As a pre-merger Delta Flight Attendant, I am so excited to have all of the NWA guy and gal as my new flying partners!
I will miss NWA for the history of what it gave when you think of the great circle route you think of NWA, but I think this is the best of both airlines and DL will become an elite Airline.
I wish it ended at 3:22 and i'm not exactly certain if this will be the best change but we'll see how it plays out. im just not ready to lose an airline this great
harvey, its a change for the better. I guess you'll just have to wait till were eventually hired by Delta. We will always remember NW, but DL will keep her in good hands!
i searched NWA as in the par group and this came up :/

And I will miss them forever since they're a part of my memories, my childhood.

delta stinks. of all the airlines to buy out, why did they buy a good one instead of a boring, lame one
ned987 1 year ago
Delta has no respect for the people who worked for Northwest Airlines and the people who frequently traveled on Northwest Airlines. What I mean is, they have nothing in the livery that really resembles any part of NWA! No nothing! I mean, the UsAirways and America West merger kept AWE and the callsign Cactus. CO and the United merger will have the name United and the logo of CO. But nothing, nothing at all to resemble a little bit of NWA. Delta is horrible!
PilotX95 1 year ago 11
@PilotX95 on the contrary, i flew a northwest flight with my brother once and the ppl were very nice and helped us get to our gate (Now granted, I'm not a human GPS system who knows her way around an airport and gets very nervous around crowds easily. i'm disabled. my brother seemed to know his way around sort of...i had to sway him to "pull over and ask for directions" b/c he kept leading us in the wrong direction but with the help of a kind NWA crew member we were lead in the right direction)
Stephie2007 2 months ago
@PilotX95 DELTA bought Northwest Airlines. As the new owners, Delta's widget stays. The others were mergers, a combination of two carriers!

Delta, "merge" with companies and take all their valuable assets and destroy them. I have no respect for them. I'll miss you northwest.
ie210 1 year ago 3
@ie210 my valuable assets you mean unions and debt? then yes. delta is a non-union company. still is. northwest was union. they had an election for union or non union. the employee's of both voted non-union. pan am was bankrupt and and delta bought them. delta paid off all of their debts, both domestically and international. so by doing that, delta deserved the right to paint over pan am's livery. think twice before you speak of facts you do not know about.
Ps3Dino013 2 months ago
@Ps3Dino013
unless your a DL employee, ill shut up. They occur so that they can take whatever good is left of the two companies.
ie210 2 months ago
@ie210 true, no election was held. i was just using layman's terms. you seem to be knowledgeable in the situation. about the pan am thing, i was attempting to make the most positive outcome of the situation known. You're right about the assets, but it is what comes with bailing someone out of bankruptcy. by the way, i am the son of a DL employee. i dont know 100% of whats doing on, but i know more than the average person. i just try to defend delta because people seem so quick to hate on them.
Ps3Dino013 2 months ago

I USED to like Delta. Or maybe its just that I think that Rick Anderson is an asshole. No offense intended
ie210 2 months ago
@ie210 I like delta because I tell them I have 40 year employee seniority and they treat me very well. :) plus I have a lot of patience when I fly standby. Honestly my favorite airline was continental. I'm a little saddened by the fact they merged with united. I haven't had great experiences with their gate agents in o'hare.

at 2:56, it sounds like that lady is about to cry!

Katimashi 2 years ago

Goodbye northwest. I still think that they should have kept northwest's name during the merger. It really sucks to see such a great airline go. NW is the reason i wanted to become a pilot. Thank you northwest for doing all you have done to help the aviation industry you will be missed.

TheCannonofMohammed 2 years ago

Take care.

Dear All,
I have some questions about sociology and psychology:
(1) Why do we love flying?
(2) How does flying benefit us, our society and the world?
(2) Why do we have impresssion that flying and aviation relate closely to lifestyle of Americans?
(3) How does Americans' aviation success relate to Americans' culture & values?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstrom!!! :)
