tatomuck, wake up and get your head out of your ass. if i can get married, vote for president, die to PROTECT my country, and start a family at 18, why can't I have a drink?

I'm friends with many europeans aged 18-19, and to them the idea that one would consume 5 alcoholic beverages at once is simply unimaginable. Yes some of them do get drunk, but none of them fear the consequences of calling an ambulance should a friend pass out from apparent alcohol poisoning like most 18-20 year olds do in America. Besides, if I can buy a gun, join the military, and be charged as an adult in criminal cases, then why can't I be allowed to have a beer?
tatomuck, your an idiot. There's a reason why almost everywhere else in the world has a drinking age that is much lower or even non-existent then ours. 21 clearly doesn't work, alcohol is going to be consumed regardless. Would you rather shut your eyes to it and have your children drinking in unsafe and unsupervised areas, or educate them properly on a substance that is perfectly safe when used maturely? Nearly every law acknowledges an 18 year old as an adult, so should the drinking age
Your argument is invalid. I drink plenty of alcohol and i'm doing perfectly fine in school. I have solid A's throughout my courses and I am fully responsible if and when I consume alcohol.
I'm 19 and I drink in public all the time. If anyone starts shit with me I will just give them the middle finger.
MADD and the rest of these shit groups need to get their head outta the government's ass and realize that we'll be drinking no matter what they say, and they can't stop us. I'd like to get wasted right in front of them than vomit in their faces.
the drinking age needs to be changes for the same reason that the prohibition was a bad idea. most teens drink because they like breaking the law, if it's legal, then it's not as fun.
@fissure226 I personally do not drink to break the law. I drink because it allows you to loosen up, beer taste better then any beverage on this planet, and it is social. I get what you're saying though
I am sitting here trying to think of any 17, 18, 19 year old that does not drink alcohol. They drink anyway...legal or not. I am 56 years old. I started drinking when I was 15. I still drink. It has knot caused me eny plobrems.
"Taking away a teenager's car keys and replacing them with a beer may prevent death and injury on the road, but it sends a dangerous message to teenagers that it's okay to break the law."
If you want to take something away from the people, take away the necessity of these young people to feel the need to go to another country for the feeling of freedom to have a good time and potentially end up dead or raped. Who are the government and the authorities to regulate what an adult chooses to consume once reaching the age of majority. If the government really cared about health the well being of people, cigarettes would be illegal, but then they would lose all that tax revenue.
I agree people should have the freedom to hurt themselves if they wish as long as it is not hurting anyone else. My father died of lung cancer at 59 from smoking. I choose not to, but would die for the right to. My grandmother who also died of cancer and stroke, had a quad bypass in which they saw your breastbone apart and rewire your heart with arteries from your legs. That is enough to make me never smoke, but I would defend her individual liberties to do so.
"Taking away a teenager's car keys and replacing them with a beer may prevent death and injury on the road, but it sends a dangerous message to teenagers that it's okay to break the law."
If you believe that an 18 year old is not mature enough to drink responsibly, then certainly he is not mature enough to defend the country by risking his life and possibly dying. I say raise the enlistment age to 21.
I jest at the absurdity of my statement. Maybe if the drinking age was 18, you wouldn't have highshool graduates going to Aruba or Mexico, risking their lives by binge drinking and putting themselves at risk for rape or murder. As an adult, I have no need to go to another country.

The drinking age is bullshit. I think that it may be ok for 18 yrolds to have some restrictions on alcohol, but to have alcohol totally banned from an adult (18) is a breach on the U.S. being a free country. Well guess what, this isn't a free country, otherwise 18+ would be able to drink beer... Fucking government just does whatever they want.

People that don't think that over half of 19-21 yr. olds drink on a regular basis anyway are just plain naive/blind/stupid.

If you say that the government has no right to control what adults consume, then cigarettes ought to stay legal.
