I really like the interpretation choices he made. Especially the lead-in to the chorus. The chorus is now all about how he's distracted by a pretty face and the fight became second fiddle. The whole has more of a storytelling effect.
That said, the technicals around execution left much to be desired.
@sev9797 i said "SOUNDS LIKE" , actually he's categorized as a bass-baritone, my remark meant how shameful and out of tone his interpretation of votre toast was. the sad thing is that some people still think he belongs to the great ones
He has not understood he sings of a toreador. This is not meant for finesse and pianissimos (not throughout the aria as he does). This is meant for raw energy. Look up Hvorostovsky.
Okay, I admit I looked him up because he's Anna Netrebko's husband (never knew who he was) but listening to this *sigh*, I CRINGED at 1.35, the way he said "Toreador" omg.. in my opinion (so don't misunderstand! It's just my personal opinion!!) - he was either very, very nervous or having a horrible, horrible day because there's no way this guy can have success with a voice like this, sorry .. I couldn't listen to the whole thing, had to switch off. Sorry.. Just my opinion.
damn, many of you folks are hard on the kid. Despite being kind of a douche bag, singing the high notes out of tune, mess'n the french up... he's not half bad.
goldenthroat - He's not a baritone. He's a bass and he's singing in a ballroom. This guy is the real thing! Everyone has an off day. Not that I'm saying this is one of them. He's fantastic!!
Not a bad voice, but sloppy musicianship, poor French, and occasionally out of tune. How this baritone has a big international operatic career is beyond me.
BEST baritone? Not IMO, but he does have significant musical talent and his acting flows, you have to give credit. I think the issue is that a lot of new performers who have the looks tend to rely on that rather than to remember that the music has to be just as important if not more. Its true, however, that even the Opera Community has gotten more vain on the stage.
I will say this though - as much as he had mistakes here, the fact he's very easy on the eyes made it easier on the ears! lol

For being such a big performance of this piece, it is truly sad that he has so many pitch and diction problems. Why does money have to be so influential?...
What a disappointment this rendition is! It's out of tune in many places, no power, no passion, worn out, far too light voice. I have heard him in Mosé by Rossini first, several years ago, he was brilliant then, what happened to him? This is very weak, he must not sing it.
honestly my favorite baritone of all time......and I think he is the best who ever walked the stage. He is the complete package. looks, voice, acting, and movement on the stage.
Plenty of Latino strutting around though to make it believable--the jacket comes off at around 3:26 to wave at an imaginary bull.
He and his wife, should be mentioned, are not exactly icons of diction. Maybe this is the new trend in multicultural opera--"to the deuce" with the words. Also, include as many extra-musical gimmicks as possible.

in comparision to his winning Banquo in 1998 it is a worn out voice, in this specific rendition, his dark and flexible timbre at 1998 is gone and turned to be a light bariton Escamillo is a light bass, it is a negative surprise
I think the Fs are nice, the Es are not. He's really leaning on that microphone for dynamic differences. No way could he get away with that in an unamplified situation. The French doesn't bother me as much as what he's trying to do in the middle part of his range....though it is nice not to hear this selection just yelled. I don't believe he'll be doing this role on stage anytime soon.
yes, very unfortunately! It actually makes the sound project half the amount it could do if the singer sang open. makes you wonder what the teachers were thinking, really.
at least to me,he seems even to be faking the voice a lil' bit...I mean,I can reach lower than that and my teacher still tells me to don't "fake" my voice that way,the voice should come out naturally...though,I'm only 18,my voice hasn't developed completely even when at least to me I sound like a dramatic tenor
I think your teacher's right. Apparently the bass voice is the longest to develop. Makes sense when you think that the voice deepens more as you age.
What's frustrating me is that I can't decide whether I'm a lyric tenor or baritone... I can get the high C no problem, but F4 is an absolute shit. Perhaps you feel the same?
yeah,my teacher is my uncle hahaha...I can easily reach f4 but the c5 is the one imposible for me,and when I unusually reach it,I do not reach my head resonators...do you mean middle c? or high c? cuz high c is like c6 right?
I mean C5 by high C. The 'tenor C' if you like. That's why it's surprising that the F4 is so difficult.
You may find it a good exercise to go from falsetto on C5 downwards, then go upwards in connected voice with a 'falsetto feeing'. That once helped me. Eventually high C just comes naturally.
oh ok,then that's the one Im still missing...I am just a few more pressure to get to it but my voice breaks down when I am about to...and thanks for the excercise!
singing is not bad. it is not that good, but it is not bad. the presentation is interesting. not very exciting, but intriguing in what it says about opera's current state.
I am glad he lost weight and is emphasizing his assets.
I like his voice and his acting but his french is horrible -.- one must forgive him since french pronunciation is not easy for spanish speaking people...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this man is sexy!!!! and, i thought the same thing, carmen gives nothing, she's like ice!! maybe she was just nervous :-). ..but if i had a man like that doing that to me, i would be into it a bit more lol!
i agree, his singing's a bit wonky in this one, but watching him, i did have to remind myself to blink... just give him a few more years b4 he tries Escamillo again. he will rock evry1's world!
Carmen, darling... Erwin Schrott is pulling a rose from your boobs! Drop the pole-in-ass attitude, will you? What's the use of having a bold actors and passionate singer like Schrott if he's going to get no feedback whatsoever!!!?

oh ok,then that's the one Im still missing...I am just a few more pressure to get to it but my voice breaks down when I am about to...and thanks for the excercise!

singing is not bad. it is not that good, but it is not bad. the presentation is interesting. not very exciting, but intriguing in what it says about opera's current state.
I am glad he lost weight and is emphasizing his assets.

Really boring...
If you want a manly and sexy Escamillo, try Sam Ramey or Ruggero Raimondi, and I'm speaking about singing, not about looks.

Singing? Sharp pitch, approximate notes, and weird French.
Looks? Small build, handsome and sexy. He's a natural to become famous.

Whatever he's doing with his hands has no significance and neither do the false notes. Sometimes it's a good idea to marry into a famous name :-)

this man is sexy!!!! and, i thought the same thing, carmen gives nothing, she's like ice!! maybe she was just nervous :-). ..but if i had a man like that doing that to me, i would be into it a bit more lol!
belly2000 2 years ago
i agree, his singing's a bit wonky in this one, but watching him, i did have to remind myself to blink... just give him a few more years b4 he tries Escamillo again. he will rock evry1's world!
mkbub 3 years ago
Oh my.... he is hot, but his singing is a bit wierd in this song. I normally like him, but not in this song.
But never the less, he usually rocks the stage and therefore I am willing to forgive him almost everything!!!

Carmen, darling... Erwin Schrott is pulling a rose from your boobs! Drop the pole-in-ass attitude, will you? What's the use of having a bold actors and passionate singer like Schrott if he's going to get no feedback whatsoever!!!?
