  • I love Jojo Mayer but Jim teaches this so much better.

  • The only problem is he cant explain it that well.

  • Dude is good and all, but I can't lie, he kinda creeps me out a little bit. Just a tad. Like a psychopath killer tad bit.

  • I'm a bit disappointed in this master's explanation, if I did not learn the Moeller stroke in another video I wouldn't have a clue what it is he is trying to teach us, goes to show not all the great ones are good teachers, sorry

  • What new sh*t has done Barker to be considered something "innovative"? Stupid kids, please stop to consume all that shit boxed by music labels. Start to appreciate the people that has studied and/or applied drumming, percussion and MUSIC at PROFESSIONAL level first.

  • One of the great tutorials, So glad I got to meet this man - a true master of the rudiments

  • does he use fingers or is that bad technique? so like german/moeller/some finger use

  • @4against1 go shoot yourself for us.

  • why does every single drum video make mention of travis barker? He's not THAT great people

  • Great explanation and demo...very clear and direct.

  • anyone who thinks this video explain the moeller technique comppletely, please buy the full dvd Speed power control it clears up most of the questions you lot have been having pointless arguments about. its a little more complex the 3 strokes but this is the starting point

  • so hes good on a fucking note book id like to see him play some phat grooves on a fucking set like travis he has a fucking dw collecters behind him and hes only playing on a fucking book

  • @4against1 uneducated idiot

  • @4against1 Are you for real? I refer you to the answer provided by beakon7...

  • @4against1 so............ whats your excuse for talking about travis barker on a jim chapin video?

  • @4against1 also, hes not playing on a book. its called a practice pad, and judging by your idolatry of travis barker, id bet you dont have one of those :)

  • @otherside65 its a fucking book dumbass cant you see the fucking books on the base drum?? you must be retartede or blind dumbass

  • @4against1 right, but hes not hitting it, retard

  • @4against1 what the fuck u stupid dumb ass that book is probably just like my music teacher its probably full of music hes wrote and hes obviously playing on a real feel pad debby dumb dick

  • @4against1 Travis is the best example you can come up with? Dude, the simplest Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, Thomas Haake, Chris Adler groove has more complexity and skill in one hand than Barker has in his entire career. Go listen to real drummers before you talk crap about a guy who's clearly an incredible drummer.

  • @4against1

Such arrogance, learn some respect. He's not playing on the whole kit because it would be impractical for teaching purposes, because the sheer noise from the drums would cloud the actual lesson. With the book, you get a nice click that isn't loud, but distinctive.

By the way did I mention that you need to learn some respect, especially since he has passed away?

  • @4against1 He can play a notebook better than Travis can play a kit.

  • @4against1 you are one the most stupid people i have ever met

  • @4against1 That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

  • @4against1 i die a bit inside from your pathetic comment. just another clone who heard in school that travis barker and joey jordison are the drum gods -.- seriously why do you even bother commenting on things you dont know shit about? you must be just a brat who follows trends and believes everything that others do, i'll be checking your profile to see if im right. KIDS THESE DAYS -.-

  • @4against1 Only one problem: Barker is only second rate at best. Come up with a better example, there's literally thousands of better drummers

  • Great teacher!

  • He sounds like the bear from the jungle book.

  • @drummer6alphahotel ok, peace ;)

  • @drummer6alphahotel You are an idiot! I personally had the luck of getting a drum lesson from Jim Chapin around 10 years ago and i still have the drumhead with his autograph and best wishes. He was brilliant, kind and very modest. Although he was so much older than me, he was way faster and more exact than i am now, even after many years of practice. He is a legend of drumming and all drummers should recognize that and respect him! RIP Jim!

  • DW rocks !

  • guys guys guys, you can't get it over night, i've been practicing this since i found it years ago and still haven't perfected it. if there is one thing about drums that matters a little more than components, its patience!

  • Jim Chapin= Grand Master

  • Two years today we lost one one of the greatest teachers drumming has ever seen. We miss you, Jim.

  • @drummer6alphahotel why don't you joke about justin? always woks.

    whit love, pedobear

  • @drummer6alphahotel YOU'RE A PINHEAD! CHAPIN WAS A STUDENT OF SANFORD MOELLER HIMSELF AND HAS PASSED ON THE TECHNIQUE TO MANY FAMOUS DRUMMERS LIKE WECKL AND RICH.

  • Circa 1980 I mastered Fred Albright's Contemporary Studies for Snare Drum. Far more valuable from a technique and musical perspective than focusing on Moellar.

  • HE'S SO WELL DRESSED!

  • ok now try to do it without accents! As I said on another post, this is a stupid "technique". Too much effort for very little reward.

  • if I was the camera guy, I would b cracking up, he's so animated

  • nice^^

  • I've been trying this for a few minutes and I will admit that trying to find that fulcrum is driving me nuts! (My wrists have been getting a bit tired of late so I thought I would give this method a shot.) Problem is, my stick is sliding back towards the meaty part of my hand. Is he using the base knuckle at the bottom of the index finger because it looks like his index finger is sticking straight out?

  • @PhantomDrums917 He is using his middle finger, but it is also possible to do this with your index finger or even ring finger and pinky. The stick ís held lightly in your hand, so you have to practice what's the least amount of pressure required to still hold your stick in place in your hand, you can also search for "freehand technique", which is built around this concept.

  • @sikory Thanks!

  • @PhantomDrums917 check out dave wekl advanced grip ! watch closely he is holding the stick witjh his middle finger & his thumb instead of the index finger letting the rebound do its work! hope it work! it did for me 270 bpm moeller stroke arrived today!

  • @realcucus Will do. Got a direct link handy? :)

  • Comment removed

  • @PhantomDrums917 Try to practice the moeller technique for some minutes only is WRONG!

you should practice this technique for day and weeks and months to do it well! so stop being lazy and start PRACTICE!

  • @omri538 Oh, I'm not lazy, I've been playing for 25 years. I want to make sure I am DOING IT RIGHT before I commit to learning something new. Not so easy to watch a video and learn.

  • @PhantomDrums917.

one thing i have learned about moeller man is you have to be persistent every day 1 hour to 2 hours... i have been going out it for about 8 months now and its really coming together nicely but you have to have FREE STROKE tap STROKE down pat and whipping motion you need to have a good concept of what you are trying to achieve... in these three strokes you playing example FREE STROKE.. catch into hand like throwing a ball.and just keep at it.. don't stop know what u are playing

  • Thats a good way to loose an eye.

  • Drums are all brains ... it's hard to think and do physical work! Gotta learn how to think to a beat... the thing I always have trouble with is memory hahah... I don't know how people memorize 40 minute sets with absolute precision.. it's like memorizing a whole chapter in a book, and not getting a single word wrong. ;)

  • I like playing triplets with double strokes...not as physically challenging but definitely more mentally challenging :)

  • @4against1 if u really think travis barker is the greattest ur not really a drummer or muscian at tht... travis barker is hella good dnt get me wrng but u need 2 listnin 2 more drum styles nd drummers..

  • WTF did he do with his sticks at 0:26 ?? XD

  • what's the best video to learn a proper traditional grip/stroke on youtube/internet?

  • @zuma5278255424 I remember the videos by derrick pope and dave weckl, they explain it well IMO.

  • That "slip the other hand in" part is sick!

  • 100% blue collar all the way. you rich phaggots learning drums will never truly understand Chapin.

  • he was crazy

  • metal

  • WHY on earth would anyone dislike this video? They must not be drummers...

  • damn this guy cleans up good lol. in his other videos i didnt recognize him without the suit.

  • @pearldrummerbt123 travis is greeeeeeeeat for punk..okay well thats cool...

    jim chapin can play EVERYTHING!!

    amen my brother

  • @DNWGrets travis ibarker s the best fucking drummer in the world he can school this old tard on a fucking set ok dumbass?

  • @4against1 man stfu, you need to be musically educated. ok dumbass?

  • @4against1 im gunna go ahead an assume this is a joke

  • @4against1 lol nice jokes

  • @DNWGretsch182 please stop trolling

  • nice .,a student of Sanford Augustus Moeller which moeller technique named.,hope its not 2 l8 to say Rest In Peace.,great contribution.,=)

  • RIP jim

  • phenominal power for a guy who must have at least been in his late 70s when this was recorded RIP Jim

  • can this make rudiments easier to practice

  • 1:11 LOL

  • look how his pointer finger straightens up...

  • LOOK AT DIS NIGGA!

  • like

  • big master ... r.i.p. :((

  • that guy made absolutely no sense yet i understand what he is saying lol

  • "Advanced Techniques For the Modern Drummer" Best book I ever bought. Thank you, Jim! RIP

  • really good

  • STROKES ALL THE WAY

  • P.I.M.P

  • I took one lesson from Jim, and i've carried it with me my whole career....great educator.......Great asset to the world of drums!!!!!

  • Bounced, or it's not the (version) of Moeller Chapin's describing. There's argument all over the place, and the funny thing is it's all the *same* economy of motion at different tempos and performed by different bodily mechanics. Do what's comfortable and effective for you. These are *all* just guidelines. (I'm not interested in arguing with anyone btw.) Cheers.

  • emmm.i wonder what cymbals and drum he use...

  • this dude would have played amazing death metal.

  • @p3tro he's played much better stuff.

  • whip it

  • if you put 2 hits next to each other, you might as well make it all a single stroke roll, so screw this stuff about the third hit being a regular hit. im gona make it be a bounce, off of the second hit. then you would be seeing some speed from the "moeller" technique.

  • I believe that the first two hits, you r correct on, but the third hit, you're just putting a regular hit next to another regular hit, which is really close to just hitting like 8 together, but 2 hits only can make it go faster just a tiny bit, but thats it. or what else i see is that the third hit comes just from your hand being lazy, but what i believe is that you should let it bounce after the second hit, because you get the most power from that, and more speed than just another regular hit.

  • Great video,Great drummer,Mr.Jim Chapin!

  • Oh What I'd give to be a fly on a wall and listen to you and Joe discussing the proper approach over a pint...............on forearm velocity :-)......thank you James for this Master Class!

  • Good way to learn the moeller technique: I started practicing fast triplets with each hand using mostly my fingers and a littlebit wrist: RRR LLL RRR LLL, and when i got that going fast, i noticed that i can go really fast triplet, but cant keep the roll up as fast with only fingers: RRR R R R R R. So i started doing the whipping motion to get like really fast roll of triplets, and with a little practice it became a continuos singlestroke roll with accent every third Rrr Rrr Rrr--> RrrRrrRrrR

  • If you are interested in learning this method, you've got to get this dvd. He's straightforward and on topic the entire time.

  • this video just gets me! haha

  • BEAST!!!!!

  • Curious question:When playing the first "whipping motion" on the single hand triplet, is the second and third note played bounced or stroked?

  • @sanstitle

There are different opinions about that, here's my take on it, first of all you have to hold the stick loosely in your hand, when you do that at higher speed you can't make every stroke completely, because you have rebound from the drum/pad/cymbal, since all practice begins slow at first you need to play each stroke, in the waving motion described here, you'll notice yourself that you're going to make use of reboud simply by controlling the amount of squeeze on the stick

  • @sikory ... yep, pinky and ringfinger used as levers to control the amount of bounce... the stick rests between the thumb and forefinger just like a guitar pick would... that is the fulcrum. Exercise without wrists and arms (just use pinky and ringfinger) to gain strength. Keep doing that until you can get a double bounce without any wrist or arm motion, then this will become "easy". Should take about a week or two to develop the strength.

  • @sanstitle the second note rebound

  • @sanstitle

    stroke 'em all you pussy

  • Pure Genius...they're never be another.

  • I studied with Mr. Chapin many years ago...you never forget.

  • is he blind or smthing? but his good=D!!!!

  • he is a goddamn robot, look at his face, while he is playing :O

  • He's doing the technique in triplets. I think it's better to learn the technique as doubles first? I'm not that great at this technique, can anyone help me out - which is better... triplets or doubles?

  • Both, depending on musical context. It is more useful at triplets than doubles. 3 for the price of 1. You can play 4 or 5 or more too, but the rebound gets soaked up and the ending notes can get a bit slurred.

  • its funner in triplets XD

  • you can do it in quarters

  • ok, i understand the fundament on moeller but why always in triplets? cant it be played in binary?

  • It sucks, but it was made for triplets I think.

  • The Moeller is actually one stroke,it originated from marching band style plpying. It's taught in triplets to maximize control, endurance and speed

  • @nanitomx you also can do it in quarters

  • @nanitomx Check out Claus Hessler and Dom Famularo's book "Open Handed Playing" to see how Moeller is utilized behind the drum kit, even if you never want to play open handed, you can just cross your hands and do the exercises. And yes, you can do doubles, triplets, or even 16ths or more.

  • I think triplets are great practice. I thinks its up to the player to improvise. Thats where creativity kicks in.

  • @nanitomx It can. Watch Tony Royster Jr during his warm-up for the Guitar Center drum off. He explains everything there.

  • MASTER FOR EVER!!!

  • Rest in peace JC

  • 1areyouretarded1: Quietly I mean in a low volume. Moeller is usefull only for what is shown on that video. What if you want to play triplets without accents or with accents on notes 2 or 3?

Accept it: thumb and index fingers are better , stronger and more precise the better for finest manual grasping... they are controlled by more numer of muscles.

Read something about the evolution of the hand movements (evolutive pshycology) and fisology.

I`m sory if my english isn`t clear at all.

  • I began practicing 1:33 a few weeks ago and much to my delight found out that I don't need a real girlfriend ! ! ! Kewl ! ! !

  • That's why mortal people name musicians as fags :D

  • @EddieLandsberg HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH....thats the funniest thing iv ever heard!!!! i love you

  • I think Moeller is excellent for speed and endurance (as the video title says), but not for playing in low volumes and slowly.

On the other hand, I think "Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer" is an excellent book. That`s really useful.

  • You can't do it quietly? That's proposterous. Maybe you should re-word that to 'you can't do it quietly' but it is an incredible technique to prospire from decrescendo to crescendo.

And second, moeller wasn't designed to be played slowly. It was initially designed to play16th note triplets comfortabley using traditional grip on a drum kit.

  • literally you don't know how it works

  • are you fucking kidding me!?!?

  • yeah i can totally do that.....

  • He makes me cry *wet eyes*

  • do you do one hand at a time or do you mix them together ? right left right left or right right right left left left ???

  • It all depends on what you want to play, you may even play a continous RrrRrrRrr... for an accented triplet patten on rise of hi-hay.

  • dude! he keeps time prefectly while giving his monologue... crazy

  • do you guys think jim chapin ever did cocaine??,,...on a serious note,...brutal lesson, and a legendary drummer!~!! thanks jimmy!

  • Rip master drummer!thanks for all,god bless you!

  • When your alternating strokes is it still three hits per hand or just one, You know, when you get it fast

  • alternating strokes are always 1stroke right, 1 left, 1 right, 1 left, but I guess that's not your point. in the beginning of the video he does accented triplets which is the "three-stroke" in each hand, later on he does this 'three-stroke" in only one hand and uses finger control in the other, when to use which depends on where you want to place the accents. There is no real difference wether you do it fast or slow, only at faster tempos you squeeze a little bit harder (don's choke the stick)

  • I meant do you ever do three srokes in both hands, instead of using finger control in the other

  • You do if you want to play accented triplets, since the accents alternate between both hands, and each plays 1 accent, 2 non-accents

  • Haha! Love the "fledgling bird" analogy! I'm going to steal that one day.

  • RIP jim chapin

  • If your just jealous, why don't you just stfu? Or do something useful and study this tech.

  • I sense a ton of jealousy here. All of you haters should respect Jim's dedication and attitude towards drumming. This technique has been around for over 100 years, well older than any of your insignificant lives. Try learning something instead of bashing it. Nothing worth while ever comes without hard work.

  • R.i.P.! I'll never forget what you did for drumming!

  • @SgtPeterFuck is he dead?

  • @mqmqmwmw

yup. died on the american independence day.

    RIP

  • amazing

  • oh my god!!!!!my drum teacher learned me exactly like that!!!!!

  • You'll be waiting for a while, troll. He's passed on.

And not that it makes any difference, but he's using the pad to show practice techniques - something you probably wouldn't understand anyway.

  • Stupid, just stupid. No other words.

  • i swear if you didn't know he looks blind, like a blank stare, but great drummer

  • You really don't get it, do you?

  • he died you dumbfuck

  • his stick heights are amazing!!

  • This dude could prolly play some mean death metal lol

  • that would be fuckin funny.

  • please reply

  • i use traditional grip and i control the stick with the forefinger and the thumb (just traditional). Maybe at the beginning the stick will slide out of your forefinger but after a little practice you get it.

  • how do you grip the stick for traditional but still be able to chop it

  • What do you mean chop?

  • he has a great teaching method.

  • just awesome watching a master at work...on another note...that comment five down from this about barker beating his ass was just stupid....travis is a good modern drummer...not a theory based master like chapin

  • that bit at 3:23, jesus christ....

  • those singles at the end....... he just throws them in there like theyre nothing... my god

  • his good

  • are you taking the piss.

even travis would laugh at you for saying that

  • sorry but R.i.p not nut

  • lol his head goes mental

    nut R.I.P

  • R.I.P JIM CHAPIN :(

  • Sanford Augustus Moeller was your teacher.. God bless him..!

  • he could eat lars ulrich

  • Who couldn't?
