Man I wish Cavalryman had never gone to Godolphin. When Andre Fabre had this horse as a 3yr.old in France, Cavalryman looked poised to become one of the best middle distance turf horses in the world. When he won the Prix Niel, the Grand Prix De Paris, and ran that cracker of a race in the Arc De Triomphe that STS won. He's never finished better than 3rd for Godolphin, and that was in two weak G1's in Germany and Italy. Races he would've won easily if still in Fabre's barn. JMO.
With Fame and Glory returning for another season, plus Cape Blanco and Midas Touch, and the addition of So You Think, Aidan O'Brien should really have Ballydoyle loaded for bear for the 2011 racing season. I would've liked to have seen Ballydoyle hang on to Joshua Tree though. I think he was still very unexposed with a ton of potential. As he's shown for his new owners in Qatar.
Given Harbinger's untimely injury and retirement from racing. I think one would now have to consider Fame and Glory the top older turf male racing in Europe right now. With win's in the Mooresbridge Stakes, Tattersalls Gold Cup, and Royal Whip Stakes at th Curragh. Plus, beating what's probably been the toughest field he's faced yet in 2010 in this race. Winning the Coronation Cup. I think Fame and Glory is likely to win the Irish Champion Stakes, and possibly the Champion Stakes at Newmarket.
Why was the commentator going on about Cavalryman being short of room - he was nowhere near winning, even with a clear run. Fame and Glory was a gutsy winner. I was delighted to see High Heeled getting third just like she did on the same course 12 months previously in the Oaks - again at a big price.
@Peadar2000, Cavalryman was most certainly not going to beat Fame and Glory, Sariska, or even High Heeled. But Youmzain did indeed squeeze Cavalryman short of room. A classic Fallon the Felon move. If Fallon doesn't have Youmzain squeeze out Cavalryman. Cavalryman finishes at least 4th instead of 5th. He had enough momentum to beat Youmzain that day for sure. JMO.
They have obviously took there time with him and gave him a nice easy break judging by his first run, came on alot to win next time out and then even more to win the Tattersalls. In this race you see him in top flight and being a stronger horse this year, a little break, then the Irish Champion and Arc, No problem! Irish Champion is his, Arc is a different story but hell be bang there
@cmcgarth1O,Spot on. I've watched the replay of Fame and Glory's first run of 2010 in April's Alleged Stakes at the Curragh. Never at one time in the entire race did Johnny Murtagh ever touch Fame and Glory with the stick. I don't think he ever even drew it out? You can clearly see a colt that Murtagh was told to not ask for much. Because without even asking, he finished 3rd in that race. If Murtagh had ever ask, like he did in the next race, the Mooresbridge Stakes, Fame and Glory would've won.
He had a hard first half of the season, winning 2 Derby trials, big run in the Derby then a huge run in the Irish Derby which would have took a bit out of him even though he won so easily. His run behind Sea The Stars in the Irish Champion was top class, the way he walked past Mastercraftsman that day was unbelievable, pity for him, he had one the best horses in the last 50 years following him. By the time the Arc came, he was probably over the top and he should never have ran the Champion.
This is one of the most masterful rides I've seen Johnny Murtagh ride in quite some time. He took Fame and Glory right over behind his pace horse, Dixie Music, right from the break. Followed his pace horse well, all the while keeping Jukebox Jury pinned at the rail with no way out. Then, sent Fame and Glory to the front at the perfect time. As to still have enough to hold off Sariska, High Heeled, Youmzain, and Cavalryman. Beautiful ride by Murtagh. IMO.
@azertyuiop32, I agree. They could have went around Epsom another circuit, and I still don't believe that Sariska would've been able to have gotten past Fame and Glory in this race. Fame and Glory just ran like a horse that once he got to the lead wasn't going to relinquish it. I also think had he not been repeatedly checked on the outside by High Heeled, and squeezed off inside by Youmzain, that Cavalryman could have gotten up for 3rd. Every time he tried to gain momentum, he got checked. JMO.
@GBeret83 that epsom for you. its such a tricky course for horses and im sure when fame and glory goes back to a more conventional track we will see an even better horse.
Amazing to think that without Sea The Stars, he'd certainly be at stud now. I don't know, there's something telling me that when it comes down to the business end of the season, he'll be found wanting. We'll see. Certainly though in this form, he can't be unopposed.
@themightygooners4321, taking into consideration how the beginning and end of his 3yr.old campaign's ended as different as day and night, I can certainly see where someone would think that about Fame and Glory. But I've read, many times, that most trainers seem to think the biggest peak form that a horse ever show's is from their 3yr.old to 4yr.old campaigns. He did end on a bad note in 09'. With a bad run in the Arc and Champion Stakes. Let's hope that doesn't happen again in 2010.

there may only have been a length and a half or whatver between fame and glory and sariska but the gulf in class was far wider.
fame and glory won as he liked. sariska and co could have chased him all day and not got past him.
