This recorder (and many others like it) is unfortunately useless because of one very simple thing. The built-in mic preamps (for external mics) are too weak and have way too high a noise floor, rendering them useless for amplifying of a dynamic hand mic such as the MD21, RE50 etc. The technical data, various buttons etc. that have been added and/or changed, are completely irrelevant and anyone with any experience in professional audio can testify to this.
We are using the h4n in combination with HDSLR cameras, and this thing totally kicks ass! Great audio quality, great controls. The only thing we needed to do was update the firmware so we could independently control channel 1 and channel 2 audio levels.
comment 2-2: And if I listen back the recording by switching my asio driver to the built-in-input I get a kind of robot hearing of my recording. Do I have to make an Aggregate Device in Audio Devices of mac or do I have to adjust something in the zoom h4n to hear back what I have recorded in cubase. I what do I have to do precise in the Device Setup and VST connections in cubase? Can somebody help me, I will be very thankfull since I have to deliver a recording soon. Many thanks in advance!
Hi can someone help me how to set up my zoom H4n as an audio interface on my mac? I have a Mac OS x, 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, @GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM. I use Cubase essential 4. I already updated my zoom with the latest driver. In the Audio Midi setup of my Mac the Zoom is been recognized when the zoom is set to 'USB AUDIO I/F' mode. When I choose H4 I can only use H4 for the input and output. I can not use my 'Built-in ouput' as my output. This is a problem because I can't playback the song!
LOL a Video promoting a Digital Field Recorder and the Audio is the worst I have ever heard, i am hoping you did not use the Zoom to record this as that will not help selling any of these recorders ......
Thank you for this Video. I just ordered one for field recording for video projects. I've never owned a recorder but I'm glad I read the user's manual beforehand. Lots of stuff to understand.
Great unit, go to 4 channel mode to adjust levels (Line and Mic). Great direct from sound\mixing board as well. Used for 3 interviews (time code sync) and live music. A lot of features and combinations availible. Got the remote unit ($40.00), great not having to be hands on once you set it up.
Got one yesterday.. pretty amazing. My only concern is those mics look ready to break, almost predicting that, like murphy's law, if it can drop and break, it will. These are just waiting to be dropped and oh oh, there goes your $300 dollar little mics. Wish it had the protective wirefram like most mics, although wouldn't look as cool.
yes, I recorded from about that distance at the Reading jazz fest recently and it did a nice job. Place it away from the audience, off to the side if possible or it will record conversations from people around it as well as the concert. Very good recorder and nice price to. With the optional battery pack it doubles as a stun gun to freak out your riends with.
Just got one, nice and easy to use, good sound with lot's of file type's. Easy to transfer files to Pro Tools or you can use the included Cubase LE. I will be getting the optional wired remote for more flexibility. Wake up with a riff on the brain and H4N it in seconds. Lot's of record time with a 32gb SDHC card.
Where is the remote ?

Instructions are flat out terrible- gives you no clue how to drop the files into qbase then burn a cd- I'm sorry I ever bought one.

I am trying to understand this manual, but the translation from Japanese (I'm assuming) is terrible. Any after market documentation?

or there would be a better recorder.

Yes. Two 1/4 in/XLR combo inputs on the bottom. Awesome device, fixed all the problems with the excellent H4 and brought in significant improvements.

The audio on this video clip makes watching it unbearable... hardly convincing when reviewing a device that records audio.
