I find it very very hard to do anything from lockdown to a guy that is bigger than myself, i get a good lockdown and underhooks, but if the guy is 10kg or heavier than me, they just lay on their asses super heavy and give me nothing to work with. I often hear that i am strong for my size, but from lockdown, just a couple of kilograms heavier opponent and i am stuck, any idea how to overcome this problem? More weightlifting? xD Thx for great vid!
I use to use this move all of the time for passing "full closed/guard", which actually works pretty good. But I just called it the sprawl pass, cause of my wresting background. ha
This move works real good. I have been using it every time I get caught in half guard. I have been sending the guys I use it on to these videos afterwards too. This isn't something we have taught yet so they are always curious about where I learned it. You guys post some great stuff. Free Eddie Bravo lessons via youtube are nearly priceless.
I've had a few technique debates over the efficacy of the Indian Deathlock with a few of Eric Paulson's students, and I told them the exact same thing that Eddie Bravo showed in the video: maintain the clinch and/or sit up with your opponent.. Do that and there's never an opening for the IDL.
I like this pass a lot more because you maintain contact and control the whole time without ever compromising your stability.
Of course, the IDL is there if they don't have head and arm control.
And it's not just Paulson. Demian Maia uses the IDL in one of his DVD's, as well as the lockdown pass Bravo shows in this video only a little bit more technical.
such a great pass. the reason i love this pass so much is because it is basic and is SOLID. Im a blk belt in bjj and most of the 10th planet system i throw at other BB's work great bcuzz they have never seen or felt b4. i always end up doing a mini rubber guard seminar after class!
Thanks for putting Eddies stuff on here for us to share. You guys really help my ground game with the information you put on here and it's appreciated.
As a untrained layperson, I have always wondered in a MMA or full contact match, are those more comfortable in striking missing something by not developing more short range chops, punches, and finger thrusts to the head of an grappling opponent in the mount position?
If you mean is it helpful to throw punches etc., from the bottom of the mount, the answer is: not really.
When you're on your back and a skilled grappler is on top of you, you lose almost all of your striking power and your range. Even if you do manage to connect with something, odds are, it'll be too weak to do any real damage.
I am thinking that someonewho developed his hands properly could throw a damaging spear hand to the temple or other pressure point on the head or neck of the grappler; I am not anticipating that it would KO or incapacitate him but be enough to break out of the mount.
I come from a traditional striking background and I just got my blue belt in BJJ.
If you ever roll with an experienced grappler, you won't get much use out strikes that rely on such intricate fine motor control or such precise targetting.
Hi, im having a great problem, when i´m in Half Guard, Usually the person in top of me tries to make some thing like a choke, but this is why, i can not sweep this guy, because i dont know how to take him of from my neck, pls Help Me, :S is kind of this video, but im at the bottom
that istep on thigh pass is money, only time is doesnt work for me is if i for some reason cant get my instep on his thigh, best variation of that is actually to put ur head on the matt on the same side that ur in half gaurd and overhook his other arm, that makes it near impossible for him to stop the pass.
He competed a lot in smaller competitions and worked his way up to ADCC and submitted Royler Gracie, the undefeated ADCC Champion. Then he stopped competing. It is what it is. He's a world class instructor even if he's not a top notch, world class competitor.
Ari all your stuff is Gold ! I showed your channel to my instructors and they said "this is Very good but for self defense never forget eye gouges, throat strikes and groin strikes" My Japanese translation might not be perfect but overall they loved your channel 5 stars !!!!!
most of the videos that Ari posts are catered towards the sport of grappling and for tournament submission grapplers and brazilian jiu jitsu enthusiasts along with self defense techniques through his japanese jiu jitsu background. That is not to say that brazilian jiu jitsu can't be used for self defense. In my opinion the best self defense martial art is Filipino martial arts which incorporates weapons combat, grappling, and striking. I also like krav maga for tactical combat and survival.
Thanks you very much! If you look deeper, I do focus on JJJ (no rules combat) from time to time and there is a big difference between street and ring fighting. I LOVE BOTH and each completes me in a different way.
I run into an issue vs taller people's lockdowns when I stay tight, and get under the head and arm. If they extend their legs, I have to let go or it feels like my hip will go out of socket. I end up moving backwards, so this gives me another options besides posturing up and potentially losing control. Can't wait to try it, you guys are the best!
You got to roll with Eddie, lucky bastard! No such thing as a "10th Planet Nebraska". And if there was, I would never stop annoying the instructor will all of my question!
to tantoi10man: I don't know what part of nebraska u live in but there is now a 10th planet Omaha. it's at s.i.m.s. dojo in bellevue. maybe ur close enough to check it out!
i always roll with people alot bigger than me. i can only use the lockdown on people my own weight. strong legged opponents make me feel like my legs are getting ripped apart.
Just keep working it dude...most of the guys in my gym outweigh me considerably but the lockdown saves my life on those guys. What's a lot harder with bigger and heavier opponents is getting the Whip Up, but trust me the lockdown works on all weights. Just really kill their calf and twist their knee around- its painful no matter how big you are
@3:45 "and now he can sweep me easier"...cue ari looking clueless

Do the same move in full guard and you've got the "Sex Offender." Last ditch effort move due to how it ends up looking for the guy on top.
