easy enought. Since it's global economic crisis and people need to stimulus the friching the world trade. I think governments should help people turn their "dumn ss" houses into a "simi-smart ss" houses. Just put auto-light switches in every houses like closets, doors (the one like inside a refrigerator, you know). so there will not be much of wasted energy and it will stimulus the hack out of the economy as people upgrade their houses.

this is a pretty cool idea but im sorry turning off the lights for 1 hour? how bout a protest infront of a majior company poluting the earth and in that time have everyone have their houses completly shut down for not a hour but a day or 2 and have one big block party in front of the company.. that may make a bigger impact

my family turn off all the lights at everynight from 11PM - 6AM, and from 9AM - 6PM. that's like earth hour every day for me. My family and I are trying to save the earth every fricking day. And all of you do it just 1 hour once a year. god darn. I feel sorry for the earth.

But, to answer your question, it does take a bunch more power to turn on things like computers or printers. A desktop computer can run off of 1/10 the power of a lightbulb, but it uses almost the full 120V to start up.

Even if it doesnt "save the world from climate change" - it at least makes people aware, and shows that the world can unite under 1 common goal. It is also good for the children who particpate as it will help make them conscious of their actions in the future when it comes to over consumption and preservation.
