Dont forget My boy Earl Young played the drums on the bad jam, along with Don - Kenny Gamble- Leon Huff - The Three Degrees and MFSB It was the largest national anthem for black music history. It gave us LOVE -PIECE AND SOOOOOOOUUUULLLL!
I love MFSB but sadly this has some hints of campy ABBA with The Three Degrees and the saxes, and some "Wedding music"-feeling - however - superb drumming, percussion, flow, swing, bass, strings, melody et al.
Man, this rhythm section, the brass, and them strings is COOKIN!!!!! I damn well near jumped up out of my seat right here at work and started gettin down with "get down"!!!! This really should be the #1 Soul / R & B instrumental anthem of ALL time!!!
This is what it's all about man!! Long live the 70s and the Philly Sound you dig it? Oh BTW, from the 12 inch single TSOP which I so dearly possess on vinyl.
Who doesn't remember listening to this on Saturday afternoon? No matter what city or state you were in when Soul Train came on everything stopped and when it went off everything started again!! Don Cornelius, big fro's, the Scramble Board and the Soul Train line!!! Those were some good times back then!!!
@dognasty3 - ur right about that. saw a special on don cornelius & he said his one mistake was insisting ''soul train'' name wasn't used ....but everybody knew is was. great music - great memories
Any one that loves this song should have the "Philadelphia Classics" in their CD collection. Songs on the CD include: Love Is The Message; Dirty OL' Man; I Love Music; Don't Leave Me This Way; Love Train; I'll Always Love My Mama and Bad Luck. Oh how I wish for a Philly Cheesteak right now.
I wish they still had the dancers on, they were hilarious! loved the lady who lay on her back and opened her legs!!!! wish the missus would do that.......
Philadelphia's own "The Three Degrees" Very much under appreciated in their day. Saw them on an episode of Sanford And Son....the ladies had no problem mentioning they were from Philly. Great harmony. Represented Philly proudly!
I dont know about you, but this suff still sounds good to me. Even after listening to classic rock and 'ol school stations with emphasis on some of todays music, I turn this stuff on, and wham! Music.
waking up on Saturday mornings, with a big bowl of froot loops, watching Don and the ORIGINAL Soul Train dancers, the soul train line and the infamous scramble board when MUSIC was REAL music...i sure do miss those good ol days, thanks for posting this!
This is Music! This is Phillys Best I believe True musicians listen to those Strings,is that a Leslie or Hammond in the Background?Hmm?The Wah Pedal,I mean this song is Music Heaven Babe!..I mean pure pure sound orgasm! sound ecstasy..
The Best Music Era No doubt!..Gone never replaced or duplicated...
And yes,Don Cornelius biggest mistake not naming it Soul Train.
I'm latin and was 12 would get up every Sat Morning and watch Soul Train..
@Drmokat1 - I wholeheartedly agree! The fact that this piece is currently coming up to 25,000 hits, with over 50 comments and - MOST significantly - 111 likes and NO dislikes (of course, now I've said that - some prat is BOUND to...) - shows this music is CLASS!
someone said first choice was unappreciated in the US... obviously, you were not in the private clubs of NYC in the 70's... those girls ruled,,, and the children twirled like cheerleaders whenever their music was played,,, of course the " electric punch " amplified the experience,,, but still....
yeah !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the music to my childhood in oakland !!!!!!!!!! alomg with roller derby (big joan weston) and hee haw...what a great time to grow up before there was cable tv...
@currter I think that Sheila Ferguson was Prince Charles favourite (followed, timewise, by Camilla, Diana, then Camilla again!). TSOP was probably a minor hit in the UK because, in spring 1974, we were enjoying the final days of glamrock (Gary Glitter, T.Rex, Slade, Suzi Quatro, etc.). By summer 74, we were embracing disco and George McCrae went to #1 with Rock Your Baby, also #1 in the US. Wasn't TSOP the theme to Soul Train, the US version of Top Of The Pops?
Three Degrees . . . one of the most under-appreciated girl groups ever. These women had great harmony and a beautiful sound. Anyone who likes old school, or who just don't know what you missed or are missing, check out their greatest hits album. Some really good songs and great singing on that album.
The Three Degrees was largely neglected in the United States, but properly appreciated in Britain where they had five top ten hit singles, including a number one, and three top ten albums. In 1979, "The Runner" became a disco favourite.
@GrahamLondonUK Thanks Britts for giving the ladies their proper due. In all honesty I would have to say they were better singers than their material, but the lovely sound of those voices overcame most of that for me.
Where's do they say the "Soooul Trainnn, Sooul Trrain " part to this song?

@GrahamLondonUK #22? That is not too impressive. Well at least The Three Degrees (along with MFSB backing)
went to #1 later that year in the UK with "When Will I See You Again" I hear it is a Prince Charles favorite.
