  • miles davis talks about Billy X a lot in his biog, apparantly he was a baaaaaad cat, wasnt afraid to punch out anyone who gave him shit... but one hell of a good dresser

  • There is white satin!!

  • This is a great exercise for my alto sax. Thanks Gilbert! My music instructor

  • Btw, my bass instructor played for Billy back in the 80s. He always carried the same pianist with him--a guy who used to back another Billie--Lady Day. He said Billy and band were the nicest, coolest people and that it was a real honor to have played with the great Billy Eckstine.

  • Love this tempo and arrangement. Very laid back and Billy is as smooth as it gets. Handles the lyrics like the master song stylist he was. Classic!

  • The good OLD days...

  • Hey, Satin is ebony, not ivory. Where are the "Chocolate Sistas" in the montage? Get it right next time. Always stealing something...

  • @61dune I was thinking the same thing. This song always made me think of gorgeous black women and I can't get used to this slideshow.

  • My favorite one:) Try also Kevin Mahogany - he's scat is truly wonderful

  • My fave version of this classic.

  • the Greatest crooner of all time

  • Nobody does this song like Mr B.....and no female does this like Ella...

they were greats...no one today can match them!!

  • Quincy is right on if he was white hed be as big as bing crosby no doubt

  • Billy Eckstine was a true crooner with nat cole, sam cooke, johhny mathis & ray charles back in the 1950's.

  • He has one of the best voices ever. He has really influenced my singing!

  • He's one of my favorite male vocalists!!

  • Quincy Jones is quoted in The Pleasures of Jazz as saying of Eckstine: If hed been white, the sky would have been the limit. As it was, he didnt have his own radio or TV show, much less a movie career. He had to fight the system, so things never quite fell into place."

  • I love The Dukes Satin Doll, complemented with Billy's Vocals. thanks!

  • @JackHorny77 Whedre's the link for that one?
