  • i miss that late 90s-early 2000s era of like that soulquarian type, jazzy, progressive hip hop. artists like badu, the roots, mos def, common, kweli, asheru, jill scott and people like them were all on the same page of making music. i really do miss that a lot. im from the philly area and grew up with kindred the family soul, the roots, jill scott and bahamadia i miss those days of just neosoul tinged hip hop

  • what bothers me the most about comments comparing mainstream artist to underground artist is that they are comparing mainstream artist to underground artist

  • This is somewhat better than Soulja Boy Crank Dat

  • @Q8379 this shit is way better.

  • I keep waiting for the sax to bust

  • truly inspirational music that more people should groove to

  • Thumbs up if you like John Coltrane

  • it's a shame that for some people, when they think of 'hip hop' they think of lil wayne and shit like that, what u got to realise, this is hip hop. if you search hard you can find decent hip hop. so people dont sit there nd say ' i disliked hip hop until this cos if u disliked it u didnt do ur research, cos that shit dont even count.

  • John Coltrane would be proud

  • Woah wait...Is that in a sentimental mood?

  • @foxboy127 yeah, they sampled it for the beat.

  • I'm a huge metal fan who's lost faith in Rap.

    I STAND CORRECTED.

  • @thrash6664

    YES

  • @mrmightyjungle It's ridiculous how clowns like Drake, Flo Rida, Lil Wayne, and artists of their sort make it big. They're stealing the success and recognition guys like Asheru DESERVE, on top of that this guy is a school teacher and a community advocate!!!!

  • Was produced the beat? Sounds like J Rawls or Hi Tek or that other producer whoe name I forgot.

  • now this is music...unlike mainstream rap (which i detest) this says something "i dont need money" very righteous.

  • so chill :)

  • I love this joint.

  • @VirqilVicious

Room temperature some places is 115Degrees..

  • @IllBeBackIn2014 That's still a low IQ my man.

  • man someones gotta do something and open up a radio station for underground hip hop with asheru, atmosphere, wu tang, nas, eyedea and abilities, grieves, del, mos def, talib kweli, and all the old good stuff so someone may stumble upon it and realize the pop they have been listening to is comparable only to a skunk's posterior

  • what a fucking tune!, please check out my jazzy hip hop music! im a producer and i have a love for jazz and hip hop, i play real guitar and compose my tracks! im looking for some feeback cause im only 14 and i wanna get better :D

  • @jazzbluesshred Listen to Al Di Meola, Alan Holdsworth, Chick Corea and Weather Report.

  • Duke Ellington & John Coltrane - In a sentimental mood

  • Much love to Asheru. Check out his other song Soul. This is the kinda music that needs to be on radios... fuck it the masses aren't meant to be intelligent.

  • @TooChilly777 the chosen few

  • love this track:)

  • man what is the name of this sample i need it PLEASE!!!

  • @cr0magnum1 i'm pretty sure its an old jazz piece by Miles Davis

  • @cr0magnum1 the sample is "In a Sentimental Mood" by Duke Ellington and John Coltrane.

  • Comment removed

  • Until about 5 minutes ago, I didn't really like rap. Much more intelligent and satisfying music than all this lil wayne, "welcome to da crack house. Dis is the crackhouse" bullfuck. Love it.

  • Noice. Just no ice.

  • Anyone else notice how entirely fckn nice kweli's 2nd verse was? I heard this for the first time last nite around 4am sitting by a campfire.

Shout out to my boy chris for putting me on this

  • I heard of Asheru through the Boondocks and I gotta say this is some good shit. And I used to hate rap.

  • All of you talking about mainstream rap and underground seriously need to stop. I don't care about mainstream or pop music, but that doesn't mean I have to go around spreading hate. It's just immature. Shut up and listen to the music.

  • @nameno1elsehas This is so true. Sadly, even the most enlightened people can be the most spiteful.

  • Underground hip hop fights against corporate BS and spreads a message in the music.

Not all mainstream rap is bad. Even our fave artists like Pac were mainstream at one time. Thing is, mainstream USED TO be good. Sadly it isn't anymore. Mainstream these days is for the fickle mind. People who are deluded, corny, crude, shallow and people who buy into the whole materialistic shit.

Rap today is all today with image & marketability.

  • Great to hear feel good music. Not one shot fired! Can't believe people listen to ish like Waka Flaka or whatev. That shit is from the heart. Makes you check yourself as an MC and put it down everytime.

  • Underground is what's shielded from the mainstream publicity rats by those who stand for music. It takes an ear to appreciate, and a mind to love.

  • thank god for the boondocks. he's so ill.

  • Realness!!!!

  • but 5 are still too many dislikes^^

  • over 150K views and only 5 dislikes. i think thats a sign of quality

  • Home is where the Hi-Hat is at.

  • I like this...Talib makes me feel rich in spirit...like when i walk outside and see the everyday mayhem in front my eyes, he puts things into perspective!!

  • this is hip-hop.

  • I hope this guy is making money. I'd hate to see stuff like this die out.

  • wish more rappers rapped like this with some actual meaning in their songs

  • For anyone interested, the sample on this song is John Coltrane's and Duke Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood." One of the great jazz piano vamps. Check it out if you want to see who set the stage for today's hip-hop giants.

  • the coltrane sample is so ill

  • IMPORTANT MUSIC FOR OUR GENERATION........SEARCH UNKNOWN PIECES....

    UNKNOWN PIECES.....UNKNOWN PIECES......UNKNOWN PIECES.....UNKNOWN PIECES.....UNKNOWN PIECES....UNKNOWN PIECES...UNKNOWN PIECES.....

    GOD/BUDDHA/ALLAH/JAH BLESS YOUTUBERS SON!

IMPORTANT MUSIC FOR OUR GENERATION........SEARCH UNKNOWN PIECES....

    UNKNOWN PIECES.....UNKNOWN PIECES......UNKNOWN PIECES.....UNKNOWN PIECES.....UNKNOWN PIECES....UNKNOWN PIECES...UNKNOWN PIECES.....

    GOD/BUDDHA/ALLAH/JAH BLESS YOUTUBERS SON!

  • Its reassuring that there are still artists out there like this. Seems like most pop artists have the IQ equivalent to room temperature.

"I wanna take a ride on your disco stick" good job lady gaga, you're famous for being a whore. hope you're proud.

  • @VirgilVicious that comment was perfect.

  • @VirgilVicious

    I know you're sarcastic.

But I'm sick of their shit being proud.

I just want one of those douche nozzles to go to an interview, name drop people like Sonic Youth, ?uestlove, Miles Davis, and David Bowie and admit that they don't deserve their fame in comparison to them.

I just want to see Lil' Wayne say "I really don't know why I have money, I'm suuuuch a cocksucker, like everyday."

Won't happen though. Fuck his denial.

  • D-Bridge brought me here <3

  • Its good to know the message is still alive.

  • this underground shit is that real music, i love how most of it has a message unlike that gay ass mainstream shit that simply makes a club bounce, and has pretty figureheads

you can't run to every new thing under the sun, you'd be a jack of all trades, and a master of none

  • Mainstream is technically music that you listen at parties and get together, and not necessarily music you listen to when you're laid back. The relationship between underground music and mainstream is often misleading and can create an enigma of confusion. My anatomy and way of life is to smoke weed, listen to "hip hop", watch anime, and live life.

  • Asheru is the shit this is what real hip hop is all about. Fuck that new music they play in the radio, i get tired of that shit they play the same song every 5min. Nothing but real rap and hip hop...

  • yeah, Ash is my icon. every word is perfect. keep it real

  • Love the sample from Duke Ellington and John Coltrane on this beat...

  • @kshintaku13 oh yes, this beat is perfect!

  • Comment removed

  • he sounds like 2Pac the King of Rap

  • Talib kills it, in a humble way.

  • <<<hip hop fan right here asheru's ill no doubt him n one be lo need to get a song

  • YES

  • I completely gave up on rap until i figured out who made the boondocks theme (which should have been longer) and boy did i listen to it again.

  • @crazyjak56

The Boondocks theme song is a real song.

    Judo Flip - Asheru

  • Asheru is talented artist; that's an understatement. He, with a select few, have resuscitated the intellectualism from original rap. Thank goodness.

  • all i gotta say is damn. sick ass song

  • Mainstream Rap: 'Take that money, fuck that honey. Sell cocaine, flash that flash bling-bling...' If you can say those but with different wording...congratulations, you are a sellout rapper!!

  • Damn, this is freaking awesome! Simply masterful.

  • My new jam!!!!!!!!!!

  • why theres no true musick like this now days

  • I LOVE this song....I still remember copping "7 HeadsR Better Than 1: No Edge Ups In South Africa" way back in 2003 and playing this joint over and over.

  • Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesus what a tune!

  • oh my god 4 fifty cent fans !

  • way to use the classic in a sentimental mood!!!!! Btw Asheru 9th wonder n J Dilla im set all day long!!!!

  • yo i hav never heard of this guy! but i've heard the theme song for the boondocks nd ever since the show came out i loved the song and was trying to figure out who spit it. im happy i found out! :)))

  • Does anyone know what a lil wayne is ?

  • @skigh45 He is a shitty sell out that only cares for his money and women or as he calls them "bitches".He is also one of those fake motherfuckers that is killing the great genre of music called hip-hop.

  • @SheWasLikeWow You forgot to mention his lyrics never make sense are random shi*

  • @skigh45 a waste of space?

  • @yungdonkey I feel ya, he's pretty slept on... Sad.

  • In a sentimental mood - Duke Ellington and John Coltrane , great stuff nevertheless.

  • a rapper smiling on his cover... that's actually pretty original

and i hear ya underground fanatics. fuck the mainstream

  • Holy shit. This man is amazing. Mind = blown.

  • too nice

  • duke ellington and john coltrane forever. really inspiring music right here.

  • @MCJonZen Ah, man!!! Is that the sample??

  • @chunkyostrich yes it is. duke ellington & john Coltrane - sentimental mood

  • underground hip hop is the deal fuck all these fuckin fake ass bitches poluting hip hop

  • @R1Seamoney AKA mainstream lol

  • Where can i find this mixtape...4real cause this shit is hot...

  • FUCK ALL THOSE COMMERCIAL ASSHOLES!

  • Main stream Hip Hop is just going trough a Faze. Hopefully it will grow out of it. Better sooner than later. True Hip Hop stays for ever. Like Mos Def Said the industry builds careers that don't last. This shit that's going on now will fade away with time.

  • "Life without knowledge is a death in disguise"'

    Real shit

  • Thank you God! there are still real artist alive.

  • Janeshe 2 says: amazing

  • i hear talib kweli then i listen to something like bemer benz or bentleys and i get like thank god i have talib kweli

  • @yungdonkey U JUST TOLD THE PLAIN RIGHT TRUTH I FEEL YA

  • Ahhhh so fucking refreshing! Damn this is that head knock shit!!

  • THIS IS SICK! Sampled John Coltranes Sentimental Mood! Damm, this shit is soo much better than turning on the radio.

  • @trickydickflip Pandora Radio. The only way to go, its changed my life haha.

  • asheru and jay electronica are the only rappers that i really like

  • Ah, now this is real hip-hop. An actual rhyme scheme, a non-auto tuned voice and a decent beat to go along. What more could be asked for from a great track given by a master of underground hip-hop?

  • Asheru's flow is the crem de la crem! siick

  • He doesnt need auto tune or a techno beat, he has it down with a solid, simple beat. this is hip-hop. & the content is real, it's about real life, talking about real stuff, poetry. Today, hip-hop is anything that rhymes to the beat of music, that is NOT what it is, so people need to put their rhymes in check. Thank you Asheru for giving us an example of what real music is.

  • Everyone just shut up. Stop hating on Asheru and stop hating on wayne. stop hating on jay z and stop hating on soulja boy. Just shut up and listen to the music YOU like.

  • This sounds a lot different than the one I had.

  • tight

  • Does anyone know the sample for this? I was watching the Cosby Show just now and he played the original of this song...

  • Just found it!

"In a Sentimental Mood", Duke Ellington and John Coltrane.

    Enjoy it jazz fans!

  • fo real man

  • this is real music

im tired of egomaniac rappers today

that ramble on about hoes and money

  • shiiiit, rappers today??

try the last 10 years, thats all its been

    'blang blanging

    chain swing

crack cant match the vibe im givin'

shit aint changed, its a shame real music had to go underground

  • love this, first heard it on "The Boondocks" Hip Hop Doctrine mixtape!

  • damn this shit is real right here. mos def would of been sick on here too.

  • the best type of music :)

  • @1olas for sure man, that and indie rap is pretty sick to, although it's pretty much considered underground

  • @1olas I consider this indie rap but it's pretty much underground, but hell yeah man I agree all the way. I'm sick of lil wayne and gucci mane, out there gettin all the fame,

they don't even deserve, they are just another part of the flock,

i'm shootin the birds, not one is gonna survive after i'm done with my verbal glock,

money is their fucking life, so now i'm going to give them some strife,

fuckin bitches and sellin pot, is that all they got,

when someone is out there give it all they got

  • hell yea dude mainstreem anything sucks cuz its all for show. people need to make music because the way they feel not to make money and to be popular

  • @1olas Hip Hop is like a mirror, it will reflect both the good and the bad sides of the world we live in. Ignoring parts that doesn't fit your taste is kinda acting like a stupid brat

  • @dasdafoij the hip hop mirror was smashed a few years ago.. around the same time as the majik stick and krunk cup came about... someone tried to piece it together but failed .... seems it is only reflecting a distorted image of what is actually available. what happened to telling a story? other than that of pimps and hoes or in the club!!! i think if you like the shite they produce you have a very limited musical taste..and you probably listen to Akorn or Gusher on the side...

  • @1olas The Roots - KRS ONE - Talib Kweli - CYNE - Dumbfoundead - DAM - Promoe - K'naan - Immortal Technique - Cee Lo - Mos Def - Damian Marley - Devin the Dude - Nas - Edo Maajka - HandyCat(more of a producer) - Common - Atmosphere/Felt - Braille are just a few peeps keeping hip hop real, you might not be known to these, but hip hop is alive and running, hip hop is still a mirror ;)

  • @dasdafoij no doubt its still alive but the good stuff is no longer mainstream, its a shame, I wear about 10 different underground artists shirts that I have gotten over the years and people ask me what or who is that? Its sad, introducing somebody to Talib Kweli is like a kid with ice cream they can't get enough of him, soon enough I lose my iPod for half of class...

These kids today just want to act like thugs and gangsters and auto-tune makes anybody sound good... its killing Hip-Hop

  • @AtomicBlizzard12 Nice, and yes, fucking shame it isnt mainstream!

  • @dasdafoij fuck mainstream

  • @Jackel95 Be careful with tossing comments like that around, you seem like a brat that hates shit because everyone else likes it, irritating

  • @dasdafoij lol your right sorry, no but really i dont enjoy mainstream because all it is is just the same beat with the same verse over and over and over again, which isnt my thing, but if people enjoy then i say let them its just not my thing, your right that was fairly childish, i apologize :)

  • @Jackel95 I appretiate you not flaming me haha :p I feel the same way about mainstream.. Even Lil Wayne etc are rappers i dislike. There's a -few- decent "mainstream" bands if i might say, Coldplay and Rage Against The Machine are/were pretty big and still original/decent.. I guess its personal taste though. there's a norwegian saying; the taste is like our butt, its divided into 2, in norwegian it rhymes though!

  • @1olas And that was just a few i put up off the top of my head, let go of the idea that "hip hop is dead" or that "it isnt the same anymore", stop being a fucking pessimist and see things for what they really are

  • anybody notice all the new mixtapes comin out show the "rappers" cookin crack or baggin rock on the covers and all have names like kitchen music and the crackhouse.

  • go record that. i guarantee u just got a mainstream hit. go now. get a record deal.

  • @yungdonkey respect always my dude, but im tired of the whole " music today " topic, theres alot of ill emcess stillout there, no there not on the radio, true emcees that speak true never get radio play, but there around still. peace.

  • I luv boondocks, i luv ralph nader, i luv TYT, now i luv Asheru o_O

  • asheru needs/deserves more attention....

arent you getting sick and tired of that Drugs Violence and bitches shit?...

this isnt just music...its a real story...

  • this keeps it real

  • 'in a sentimental mood' in the background, thing why i like this song :)

  • first heard Asheru cuz of Boondocks theme but all his shits good

  • yeeup

  • sick sample

  • 'Dis track sick yo, Ash, Talib, Metaphor, GhostFace, And L.E.G.A.C.Y sick.

  • asheru <3

  • Asheru now has one more fan...

  • Make that two
