You know, I liked SR. Even with epic CGI it can't hold a candle to the Reeves films or even many Smallville storylines, but it was a good idea for a story. But Bosworth's Lois kinda ruined it for me. Noel Niell, Terri Hatcher, Erica Durance, and Margot Kidder are having a conference somewhere, shaking their heads sadly. It's like the Silver Age Lois we'd all like to forget even happened somehow got written for the big screen. Why would anyone do that?
You know what I've always noticed? @ 3:25 when the second wing breaks off and Superman breaks through it, the following shot of the plane falling shows what appears to be both wings of the plane on fire clearly shown @ 3:27 always found that funny.
Brandon Routh was a good cast. What sunk this movie for me was Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. For a movie with few, if any, fighting scenes, you need a villain that screams badass. And while I love KS in other roles, his portrayal of Lex wasn't evil enough for me.
The moment where Lois is struggling and she glances out the window only to see Superman fly by is one of my favourite moments of all time. So subtle and yet so awesome.
i thought this film really caught the essence of superman. much better than people give it credit for! say what you will about the film but this scene comes a close second to the 'bow down to zod' scene in superman 2!
@MrDark21knight Ok maybe the part where he withstands that barrage of bullets and the part where he lifts that kryptonite mountain over his head. But just the fact that they gave him a kid is unforgivable and requires a reboot.
@patrckhh20 i'm not going to discuss why the movie sucked...that's too easy. i only agree with lex2see that this is an excellent 4.47 mins of cinema + the part where he catches the daily planet globe. its easy to find faults in any movie, i'm here to cheer the good sections :)
The music cue at 3:26 is freaking awesome. The movie wasn't horrible, but wasn't as good as it should have been. If only the rest of the film could have been as good as this sequence or the first teaser trailer for that matter.
How did louis survive so long when he was gone? I mean... he's been back 5 minutes and she gets herself into a random disaster with a crashing plane lmao.
This is such a weird scene for me. One of the greatest action sequences I've ever seen in an otherwise utterly awful, boring and uninspiring movie. This scene and the segment where Superman saves Metropolis from the earthquake are the only 6 minutes worth watching.
Bryan Singer is a horrid director and had no passion for the mythology in Superman, he didn't understand anything at all and only made the movie to bank on merchandising sales. Poor Brandon didn't get a chance to shine as Kent
i still am not quite sure why he thought grabbing the wingtip was a bright idea... maybe the time in low orbit followed by massive neg g's caused a momentary dampener on his senses.... a weakness perhaps! Still its fun to watch lol
@kineticdeath That's the same thing I thought when I saw it in the theatre. The only thing I could imagine is that he was truing to control the spin, but then I wondered why Superman would even bother with that when he could easily do what he did at the end... If he'd just tried that to begin with it would have been a lot less complicated and challenging (or less dramatic). I guess it doesn't make sense to take the peril out of an action scene. Scientifically/character flawed, but pretty good.
Look, Superman cannot be completely invincible to everything. In a good story that people come to like, The protagonist (superman), needs opposition equal to or greater than himself. If nothing is at stake and the protagonist has no arc (character change), then there really isn't a story. All of a sudden it's what superman HASN'T done already, and that's just boring. Thats why I find Spiderman or Batman vastly more interesting than superman. . .
A good superman story always has him overcome challenges. Superman I had Lex Luthor's twin nuclear missles, plus kryptonite, SII had three kryptonians and this had a kryptonite island (yeah ok this one's sucked). Just because he is strong and fast does not mean there are things he can't fix. In fact the movies have been largely unimaginative in this respect. What if there were a virus outbreak, for example? Superman's powers are only so useful.
Irregardless, the reader cannot connect with superman; he's not even human, and he has rediculous superpowers. In all of his adventures, not much is at stake compared to what bruce has to overcome given his human limits. In a world where viruses and super aliens come to conquer earth, the reader needs somebody he or she can relate to. When you have a superhero that isn't even human, it doesn't make the plot that interesting.
The allure of Superman is not that we can relate to him. He is an ideal than mankind has craved since the dawn of civilisation - the powerful man uncorrupted by his power. We crave it because it is so rare in reality. The same can be said for the idea of a perfect God in many religions. How relateable was Jesus, but how popular the story? On top of all that he fulfills the fictional fantasy - superman lets us imagine what it would be like to fly and be super strong and so on.
@CraftyMiscreant Clearly there are reasons why people like stories of such heroes as I mentioned - even if you dont accept my particular rationalisation, you must accept they are there. Otherwise you are saying "superman is objectively dull" which is equivalent to saying "nobody likes superman" which is obviously not true.
No, not really. My reasoning is held by an objective standard or principle of storymaking. Yours it an appeal to what is pleasing to you alone, with no governing standard. That is the only reason why people like Superman.
It is not what is pleasing to me alone, it is what has been pleasing to people for thousands of years, in stories from Gilgamesh to Air Force One - a story of power not corrupting. In addition, I'd argue we CAN connect with Superman. We don't empathise with his struggle to lift the statue of liberty, but his troubles of double identity, of isolation. Take Smallville (TV series). Many enemies may be one-dimensional, but the real struggle of the story is about Clark's identity.
Gilgamesh was a person who defied the gods at first by raping women and doing things against the mesopotamian culture. When Enkidu died, he was on a quest to become immortal for fear of death. Soon after he realized his value as a human and friend. TOTALLY different from superman. If you're into it because Clark struggles with his identity, then you're better off watching Twilight. The fact is, Superman makes a lame superhero, and past all of the whistles and bells, hes
I'm not saying Gilgamesh and Supes are the same. I'm saying they are both characters with some form of power that don't use it just to self-serve. G used his strength to build the walls of his city to defend his people. Many fictional depictions of US Presidents and 'just kings' over the years fall into that same category. You are right there needs to be challenge in any story, but as DKzgd says below, that doesn't have to be protagonist mortal danger. Also, I like Twlight :)
...I think you got the Gilgameth story wrong; he is half human/half god. He went against the order of his city by antagonizing the men (fighting them at any chance), and raping the women (especially right before they get married). He built a wall for his people, but after the fact he accepted that HE WAS GOING TO DIE. And its more about opposition. Superman is so strong The flaw here is people don't relate to him, the "look up to him." this cheapens the value.
Well, its been a while since I read Gilgamesh. Nonetheless, people started writing stories of heroes and heroic leaders way back in the early Bronze Age when cities first appeared, and powerful leaders became necessary. Yet these leaders were so often corrupted by their power that stories of idealised versions became popular. Sometimes you cant relate to Superman, but I don't think relating to is the be all and end all for a protagonist. Can you really relate to James Bond?
However to give you some benefit to the doubt, superman does try to bring out the best in people and defines what true virtue and justice really is. I'll give you that. . . But thats all you get! lol
@CraftyMiscreant lol talking about "objective standards" when dealing with terms which are subjective by definition, in desperate attempt to make fact out of his comic book superhero preference...
And of course, we can't connect with sup because he is not in mortal danger him self... cause as you know, being in mortal danger while facing challenges is something average person does everyday. I actually cant conceive interesting plot without protagonist risking his neck...
The Hulk kicks Superman's ass pretty bad...Did the Thunder clap right in front of him and made him bleed from every orifice of his face. . . Batman beat superman on 2 accounts; one with the Green Arrow's help, and another with his cryptonite ring, The Flash went toe to toe with him and out-ran him...made him stuck in another dimension for 20 years...
This being the case, I do like the "why" behind him being humanitie's savior as opposed to some other heroes.
@CraftyMiscreant Best reason I can figure is that while he (some versions of him) is not as strong as the hulk, not as fast as the flash, not as resourceful as batman, he comes close to each one. If he were to fight the hulk, even though he's not as strong, he's faster, smarter, and can fly, among several advantages. Against the flash, he's not as fast, but he's much stronger, probably (safe to say) smarter, and again can fly. Batman's a whole different matter. =P
True, true, but you have to give them more credit for the physics than in most superhero films - at least the plane buckled a bit when he stopped it, and there was the bit with the wing coming off too.
the idea of that scene is great, but the acting was awful, nobody is scared or screaming, and every scene with that woman is just terrible and slowed the action
This superman is an idiot. lol... He tries to stop it by pulling from the edge of the wing which will naturally break and put the plane in a more steep dive. He should have gone for the fusalarge straightaway.
@mm031997 I think the best way to stabilize the plane at that moment was to put pressure underneath or sideways on the fuselage. Grabbing from the wings would definitely break them.Come to think of it later, i think he intentionally did that. Because the wings are full of fuel. If that's the case, it was a good move :)
In the official continuity, Clark made his presence known to humanity after rescuing a shuttle.
Watching all this with that notion in mind really makes this scene far more epic. 0:55 could have been the first time Lois had ever seen him. Hell, 3:57 could have been the first time the WORLD saw him.
So we've come up with a certain theory about Lois Lane:
Earlier in the movie, Jimmy says that Lois Lane is "still in love with you-know-who"... you heard it here first: Lois Lane is in love with Voldemort.
But wait, there's more: the word "Voldemort" means flying (or thief of) death. Flying death... so Lois Lane is in love with the airplane of death, hence this scene with the airplane plunging to what seems inescapable doom for everyone aboard...
@MrDmoney9295 bcos there r people inside the plane n its moving at high speed. the continent is static n he doesnt really care about those (lex n his guys) on it. in short, saving is a more complicated process than lifting.
@NEMZOOO It's possible that bad quality video was converted into better - it only kinda "thinks" it's HD, having the proper resolution, but it's not THE HD with the proper quality.
I love the momentary pause after he sets the airplane down on the ground, and then the crowd just erupts in applause. Definetly one of the best scenes.
What's the deal with Superman ripping off the wing like oh ya I'll just grab onto the wing and fly in circles. If I was Superman I would've just grabbed onto the nose of the plane in the first place.
@rlzfoutch The plane was on a flat spin. This would eventually rip the plane. Supes rips the wing to get it out of that spin and let it blung down. Less stress on the plane.
FYI: Whatever your opinion is of Erica Durance or or Kate Borsworth - here's the 411: Amy Adams is gonna KICK ASS as the new Louis Lane in the new franchise....
@Kidzrule743 well they do it to transport shuttles, I think. In this movie, though, I think they were trying to launch the shuttle off the back of the plane. Probably a money saving excercise, I'd imagine.
@Judo593 well i don´t think it is a stupid question because with the weight of the plane it should be imposible for the space shuttle to reach the needed spped. and i think if we go into physiks i think the space shuttle would just ripped of the mantel of the air plane. I can´t think it can withstand the force of the accelaration. But it´s a movie^^ so you just have to take it^^. And i think the plane would break apart if superman would hold it upright at the end of the sequence. it´s physik^^
I bet Superman get a strong whiff of SHIT & PISS when he opened that door.

Against the flash, he's not as fast, but he's much stronger, probably (safe to say) smarter, and again can fly. Batman's a whole different matter. =P

best part from the movie...!
Peacelover1212 3 months ago
I like the part where there's a little steel bar in the front of the plane, strong enough to carry the entire 200'000 pounds plane, without breaking.
selektra 3 months ago
@selektra
True, true, but you have to give them more credit for the physics than in most superhero films - at least the plane buckled a bit when he stopped it, and there was the bit with the wing coming off too.

Applaud for John Williams ladies and gentleman. I mean, just listen to that epic choir at 3:35 - 3:50!
letsride84 3 months ago
@letsride84 The music is great - was it actually John Williams? I found it online under the name of John Ottman - but not sure
luisrosenthal9 3 months ago
@luisrosenthal9 The Original was John Williams but I believe John Ottman gave it an update so to speak
Tygearianus 3 months ago
the idea of that scene is great, but the acting was awful, nobody is scared or screaming, and every scene with that woman is just terrible and slowed the action
VoteSkipper 3 months ago
Original was much better. This guy looks gay.
lgadwords 3 months ago
This superman is an idiot. lol... He tries to stop it by pulling from the edge of the wing which will naturally break and put the plane in a more steep dive. He should have gone for the fusalarge straightaway.
ssahan1 3 months ago
@ssahan1 He grabbed the wing to stop it from spinning.
mm031997 1 month ago
@mm031997 I think the best way to stabilize the plane at that moment was to put pressure underneath or sideways on the fuselage. Grabbing from the wings would definitely break them.Come to think of it later, i think he intentionally did that. Because the wings are full of fuel. If that's the case, it was a good move :)

This movie was freaking great!
I don't know why everyone has to hate on this movie when they would suck at starring and directing their own movie

In the official continuity, Clark made his presence known to humanity after rescuing a shuttle.
Watching all this with that notion in mind really makes this scene far more epic. 0:55 could have been the first time Lois had ever seen him. Hell, 3:57 could have been the first time the WORLD saw him.

this movie is a beast. i don't know why it gets so much hate.
blklightning330 4 months ago
So we've come up with a certain theory about Lois Lane:
Earlier in the movie, Jimmy says that Lois Lane is "still in love with you-know-who"... you heard it here first: Lois Lane is in love with Voldemort.
But wait, there's more: the word "Voldemort" means flying (or thief of) death. Flying death... so Lois Lane is in love with the airplane of death, hence this scene with the airplane plunging to what seems inescapable doom for everyone aboard...

i knew superman would pull true but the first time i saw this i was like "how the fuck is he gonna stop the plane
AMSWorldTV 4 months ago
it took him 2 tries and 2 minutes to stop an airplane from falling but about 30 seconds to lift a continent made of kryptonite and send it into space
MrDmoney9295 4 months ago
@MrDmoney9295 bcos there r people inside the plane n its moving at high speed. the continent is static n he doesnt really care about those (lex n his guys) on it. in short, saving is a more complicated process than lifting.

can somebody explain to me why this clip looks awful in HD?
NEMZOOO 4 months ago
@NEMZOOO It's possible that bad quality video was converted into better - it only kinda "thinks" it's HD, having the proper resolution, but it's not THE HD with the proper quality.

how can he pick up a plane like its casual ?
TheMRUNCLEB 5 months ago
@TheMRUNCLEB Because he's Superman :3 I thought you knew that xD.
KungFu350 5 months ago
It looks like he's just trying to stabilize the flat spin, but underestimates the strength of the wing such that it just rips off.
Lank55 5 months ago
What's the deal with Superman ripping off the wing like oh ya I'll just grab onto the wing and fly in circles. If I was Superman I would've just grabbed onto the nose of the plane in the first place.
rlzfoutch 5 months ago
@rlzfoutch it's dramatic movie effect. They don't want to make it look too easy.
kqcrazii 5 months ago
@kqcrazii I guess that makes sense except there's the fact that unless kryptonite is involved everything is easy for Superman
rlzfoutch 5 months ago
@rlzfoutch The plane was on a flat spin. This would eventually rip the plane. Supes rips the wing to get it out of that spin and let it blung down. Less stress on the plane.

@TheWorstWarlock what, send airplanes to the moon? o_o
Kidzrule743 5 months ago
@Kidzrule743 well they do it to transport shuttles, I think. In this movie, though, I think they were trying to launch the shuttle off the back of the plane. Probably a money saving excercise, I'd imagine.

This might be a stupid question but can a commercial jet actually escape Earth's gravity and fly into space?
Judo593 6 months ago
@Judo593 well i don´t think it is a stupid question because with the weight of the plane it should be imposible for the space shuttle to reach the needed spped. and i think if we go into physiks i think the space shuttle would just ripped of the mantel of the air plane. I can´t think it can withstand the force of the accelaration. But it´s a movie^^ so you just have to take it^^. And i think the plane would break apart if superman would hold it upright at the end of the sequence. it´s physik^^
