my favourite part of the film + one of my favourite tracks from Air's album Talkie Walkie! but the quality is AWFUL. couldn't you have made it higher resolution?
Beautiful. I love this movie. I am currently living in Kyoto and this scene and song does indeed capture the mood here, which is one of peace and tranquility. Perhaps my favorite part is the near the end of the video, when you can hear the black crows in the background. Hearing their call while strolling through the many beautiful shrines and temples is one of the many reasons I love Kyoto.
Sofia Coppola really understand the sense of wonder we feel when confronted with another culture. Just brilliant the way Charlote slowly walks and observes that scene from 1:21 to 1:28. This a very special movie.
Great scene. It's the little moments of reflection like this that made this movie for me. I also love the scene when she gazes out of her hotel window.
This movie is a masterpiece, few directors have shown such complete command of tone that Sofia Coppola achieves here. The last scene of this movie is one of the most intimate, heartbreaking, and breathtaking scenes in the history of the cinema.
Warm memories of an intensely beautiful country. The warmth of the people, the incredibly rich cultural history, yabusame, the food. The "quiet" that you are "allowed" to feel, which to many of us in our hurried culture feels like "loneliness," when it is not really loneliness at all; but instead, a discovering of yourself set in an atmosphere that feels like a movie set each day...but it's real...I still miss it.
Meh I don't think there's any profound secret to be found at that temple in Kyoto, but there might walking the streets of Tokyo. That's where the magic of Japan is to me.
when I went to Japan last summer I thought of Scarlett wandering around in this scene. The music really captures that lost feeling of a tourist observing a country. I love this movie so much.
I really don't wanna sound like a troll or a hater or some grumpy idiot with no time on his hands here even though I'm probably all those things but isn't this film a just a *little bit* overrated? It works well as a mega long music video, but an entire film? it gets a bit dreary as nothing much happens - I know that was the intention but for a full feature film seems a bit too ambitious .. and don't think for one minute I'm bitch-slapping Bill here, he's brilliant.
@mrkristoff I understand what you are saying, but I think this film needs to be viewed in a different manner. It really is the antithesis of the modern-day-100 things happen in a minute Hollywood film, which is hard to get used to when the norm is to be bombarded by images and situations. This is art, evoking a mood and a reflection of lives. Having just returned from Japan, it is also a tribute to that country, which is more than unique; a crossing of the ancient and the modern.
@biggnick15 It is "Alone in Kyoto" and the girl was alone. I think in the movie she was not relating to her husband as well, and Bill Murray was probably lonely too.
Been to all these temples in 2007 with 2 mates been back every year to Japan since then!!!! I didnt really appreciate Kyoto back then was just all temples, after watching this scene made me realise that Kyoto is a special place!
This is Heian Jingu, off Marutamachi street and I think the wedding scene is Gosho. I lived here for 3 years. I walked over the same stone bridge. If any of you have some money and some time, it really is all this and more.
Love the fragment at 1:45... So simple yet poignant. While the couple's clothes reflect a strict tradition (e.g. No PDA allowed), the man offers his hand...
Use to always take the shinkansen to/from Tokyo and Kyoto. Liked that it was normal for ppl to drink a cold beer while on the train. Japanese are cool.
The scene (and music) captures the magic that is found when one is feeling the world, a kind of artistic disposition, that children find and adults often forget. The scene points to where creativity and awareness live. One of the best in the movie (but there are many there). Thanks for posting.
@jacobloper2 When one isn't thinking, rather, feeling the world, then each moment is like a painting. That is what the character is experiencing in this clip. Being a witness to the splendor of each moment. Since it is a movie, the director seems to be intending this perspective. But this is how children see the world, and artist. I can relate, my best paintings come when I'm in this state.
the bell toll at 1:52 is a cold reminder to scarlett and ourselves that we are just strangers on the outside of this wonderful, breathtaking culture.. such a beautiful moment
The loveliest, truest film ever... The most mundane and down-to-earth, and the most spiritual and ethereal so perfectly combined - just like in life. Perfect. Entrancing. And this scene, and the music - like a tiny nirvana. :-) I've seen it a dozen times and dozens of viewings are certainly still in front of me... :-)
the feeling i get from this song and movie basically replicate my trip to japan. it was mystical but so interesting. mix that with the jet lag, and it seems like a dream
2003 and 2004 had some really wonderful movies. Lost In Translation, Eternal Sunshine of the spotless Mind, Million Dollar Baby, Mystic River, 21 Grams, Dogville etc. very powerful and beautiful movies.
One day, I will travel everywhere in Japan, bringing with me a 1080p camera. Then, I will make a montage using this song. One of the most beautiful, and most "feeling provoking" songs in the world.
@Benjefwil It might not be for a few years. Some of the footage coming from my time studying abroad (hopefully) in a few years. Then some of the rest of the footage coming from when I (hopefully) live in Japan.
This scene is a great tribute for the people of Japan, in these days of pain and sadness for them. We all are with you. We all put your Omikuji in the tree and wish you the best.
I went to Kyoto but I can't manage to think where are the stones she is stepping on.... does anyone know? I have traveled a lot and believe that Kyoto is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. If not the most beautiful!
I'm growing tired of the "Look! Look how strange Japan is!" movies. Sure, it's different from USA, but it seems that pretentious Hollywood film makers who don't have the time to write a proper script keep coming here to give their movies a "strange" and "mystic" feel.
