Glad to see so many people love Monk. If you like this performance you'll probably love his interpretation of I Surrender, Dear on the Brilliant Corners album. It's beautiful beyond words.
He never played a bad arrangement. It was Monk playing...enough said. (Saw him perform at the Second Cincinnati Jazz Festival in '63 I think. That gig booked ever one who was big jazz the first couple of years. Been looking for programs from back then. Anyone have a list of the artists for the first couple of years? Might have one in a box some where if I can ever find it.) You Tube is a wish come true that I never dreamed would happen in my life time......
@MrWriteright you wouldn't write lies eva.i think his wife, nellie was wonder woman and kept her golden lasso around him at all times and he loved it.tell it true monk.
You can see really clearly here that he sometimes stops and listens to the resonance of the chord he's just played; he seems to be always stretching for "the lost chord" as it were, something inbetween the familiar. And he has such a wonderful timing.
This makes me think of Frank Zappa`s movie, Uncle Meat. Most people would not ever see through the film cause it`s so different from the norm.Uncle Meat is my favorite movie. Just as beautiful as any of Monk`s piece of music or Zappa`s own music.
God it's nice to read the comments of intelligent music lovers. The Monk man was the greatest composer ever. Not as smooth as Duke or Oscar, but that's because he was always looking for that note that couldn't be found. Check out how he pauses before beginning a new phrase. Just searching for that color, I find myself laughing and crying watching this guy . We're blessed to see him perform.

If we writers could ever write the way Monk played, have mercy.

He is the who " Speak like a child".
Strange, Straight, sometimes poetry, and Beautiful.
Everybody has forgotten when growing up, but Monk kept it.

Can make you laugh and cry in the same tune. It's been almost 30 years, and nothing's come anywhere near his stature or inventiveness.

This doesn't have more views because people would rather watch the unlimited amount of CRAP that's on youtube, than watch something good.
