Also important to note is that(to my knowledge) the Mushrikeen were not persecuted by the Islamic state once they left the land. Had there been persecution(like what the Quraish were doing to the muslims when Islam was declared by muhammad), it would be reasonable to consider us as being evil.

The same rule should obviously apply today as well. And if it does not apply, then the Islamic state runs the risk of failing, which God clearly has shown to us by revealing these verses.
Take note that the Mushrikeen were not ambushed nor massacred but were given a fair notice of intent. On a personal note, I think that it was necessary to declare that the Mushrikeen be banished in order to solidify the Islamic statehood of the territory....

Iam2: Which you have no problem with, true? But, what if it was the other way around, where a militant religion that believed in, say, ten gods, forced people and Muslims to pay a tax until they submitted to it say, only three times a day of pulling out a prayer rug and bowing down, to, say, the Temple MOunt in Jerusalem? Then there would be a problem, true?
Therefore after the Islamic state was established, the Prophet was instructed to clear the state up to it's perimeter from anyone who still considered "Shirk"(see definition in previous comment under "mushhrikeen") as a way of living. There was a warning given(of 4 months) for those who refused to accept the status quo to leave the state. And off course with the exception of those who had treaties but were considered as loyal to the Islamic state......

Certainly, there is enough to understand your comment. As a matter of fact, Islam is based on the belief that we humans are subject to corruption in our faith and therefore, these verses were revealed in order to protect our society from outside influences(satan being the main cause of any corruption). We were(are!) also subject to what God(and Muhammad) considered insecurity of the Muslims by the Mushrikeen(i.e.polytheist,pagan,idolater or anyone setting up a rival to the belief in one God.....

I'm what the Quran says who has no ground to stand upon unless I stand firm upon the Torah and the Injil. I'm the one the Quran tells Muslims to come to me for my reading the before Scriptures if they are in doubt about the Quran. I'm the one who Muslims are to fight until I feel myself humiliated and pay the jizyah with willing submission. I'm the one doing the WORST of sins, which is believing that God has a Son.
