This is great, do you think you could make drawings? I would like to build a bigger version, I can think of a number of creative applications for this sort of thing! :D
I'm just about finished building this model boiler....what a project! I had the machine work done for me as I don't have the skills and equipment to do it my self. I did however do all other work. I found soldering the flue tubes to be the most tricky work as they are in odd angels to apply solder/heat. I'd repair a leak, and in-turn create another from the broad flame/torch I used. What did you find most challenging about your boiler project?
@Bgee134 ..............the rivets, have experience in rivets but not on a round tube, had to make my own tooling to get the job done. soldering was the easy part, but I do soldering pretty often.
I love these PMR kits the boiler is a work of art,I assumed it was just a pot boiler till I studied the plans and saw it has proper flues and tubes! Also the mill engine is a lovely unit, from the parts they supply there are a number of ways of building it,either assemble as is or spent more time fettleing it and giving every part the treatment leads to a very fine looking engine,up there with the Stuart offerings. These kits are VERY expensive in the UK unfortunately, the boiler here costs $500+!!
ok your talking about the boiler only,, right. well i enjoyed assembling it, i wont pay some one to do something i like to do let alone very capable of doing, but thanks for the info.
@boa721 Ask Steamchest or john coleman...he says its an extra 55 bucks for maching up to where all you have to do is solder and drill the rivet holes.
are you refering to the one running vertical to the right of the shut off valve? that is the displacement oiler. as water/ steam enters the chamber, the oil is forced upward slowly, but enough to add oil into the path of the steam that is entering the cylinder.
the valve on the bottom of the displacement oiler is to alow the water to drain out before refilling it with new oil.
Very nice!!! Are you going to finish the board it is on (stain/polyurethane,etc?) or leave as-is.. I had a nice stuart victoria setup but it got stolen at one of the shows i attend. (Covered by insurance at least though) I might build a PM setup like this though? You already inspired me to do so. Lol..
i tested it at 180 PSI. i would have to look at the plans again to see what was required, i know i went beyoung the required amount called out on the plans.
i would love to build that boiler kit, i just dont have the machines to build it.(lathe and mill)----i can soleder just not machine. any suggestions please help. know of any kits that are already machine in the same price range.
i bought the castings for almost every part, then i machined them all. very close to a 1k invested into it. then there was months of time invested in the machine work to make it all happen.
Did you have any problems getting your burner to run on propane. It would be cheaper to burn than the butane/propane mix that they recommend for ceramic burners.
No, no problem at all. You just have to go easy till it heats up or you get alot of Co. (carbon monoxide) not a problem if your burning out side and don't do it to often as it will eventually deteriorate the copper in the boiler.
Thanks for the reply,I see the dynamo is a PMR items aswell.I wish we had a PMR stockist/importer here in the UK,they do a fantastic array of kits and they dont ask stupid prices for them, unlike Stuart or Reeves,Stuart want $1500 for a set of unmachined castings for a smaller engine than yours, plus Stuarts are all cast iron where as PMR use gunmetal cylinders on some of their engines, their boilers are even more ridiculously priced, one like the PMR boiler (but not as good) its 3 times as much

how much can a unite like this cost, complete with boiler?

What is the extra pipe on feed line for?

@boa721 No, there is an obscure pipe that leads off from the boiler water feed line.

Looks great! Love the weathering on the brass and it really seems to run smooth even at low RPM. Nice work!
Just to verify, this is the PM Model Engine #1?

WOW! Thats stunning, if it wasn't for the turck in the backgound that would be indistinguisable from the full size engine!
Nice PM research dynamo too.
Job well done : )

thanks, it is almost all PM research items. engine, boiler and feed pump i think.
boa721 2 years ago
Yes, the PM stuff is great. I was tempted to buy their small oscilating engine but I think I'm going for a stationary engine to restore!
Thanks,
Phill.
