Actually yes it theoretically could, because Halo has a certain element in it called trigger volumes, and there is a HSC (Haloscript, the game's primary if-then statement code language) command to constantly check whether a player is in a certain trigger volume, so if trigger volumes were placed in certain places, and events scripted to happen when the player was in them, then yeah the gates could open.
