This makes me sad for some reason. Although these "concrete doughnuts" were boring, I find the new HOK/Populous parks just as bad. Although they have way more character, they're all there is now. I can't tell the difference between Comerica and Jacobs or Oriole Park and Citizen's Bank. They should have kept at least one of those domes, just for a little variety.
a weird but funny memory of the king dome.....they had several giant "firework" sticks hanging from the ceiling....when the Mariners hit a homer, these went off.....there were usually at least a few birds (seagulls or other birds) flying around close to the roof....when a hometeam homer was hit....."BOOM"!! the sticks went off and big FIREWORK explosions occured...and these birds would swoop erratically like dive bombers and sway around crazily until they regained their balance from shell shock!
What is amazing that even today, 11 years since the Kingdome was demolished, we tax payers in Seattle still owe 80 million dollars for its construction......LAME!
I am just seeing this for the first time. I haven't cried since I was 14 and I came very close to crying when I saw this. I remember watching a baseball game in the Kingdome. I was 5 years old. I'm 24 now. Sure, the Kingdome had some problems, but I considered it MY stadium and the Mariners are MY team.
Quite a shame it had to get destroyed before the cost of renovating it was even paid for, and then it got replaced with something NOT ready for music or concerts, and the people voted it down but it of course it still got built. Now what does Seattle have for big concerts? Oh, that's right, they go to the Tacoma dome.
I was there that day. I remember the dust cloud coming up slowly and enveloping the "safe" area we were standing in. Ironically, the bonds used to pay for the Kingdome still weren't paid off when they brought it down. The land purchased for the 1976 construction was owned by a friend of the governor at the time... Corruption in Washington state and county politics.
I remember seeing this live as it happened, from near the bridge over I-90 going to Beacon Hill. I grew up going to ball games at the Kingdome, and it was sad to see it go. Apparently it had structural problems that were made worse after a few earthquakes we had here. The roof always seemed to be problematic, too.
While the replacements are pretty nice, one can't easily forget the awesomeness that was the Kingdome.
@cjmg85 I was watching from the 2nd floor of my cousins house, I went to a game at the new stadium a few days later and managed to grab me a piece of the king dome, I still have it on my shelf even though I live in Colorado now.
Attended many events in the Kingdome including McCartney & Wings in 1976 for $10! Yup, ten dollars! Many happy memories in that building especially the 1995 Mariners. Was sad to see it demolished, though Qwest Field is a beautiful replacement.
Used to go to the Kingdome way back in the 70s. Seahawk games were cheap, since they had just created the franchise. Supersonic games as well, then there was the paper airplane contest. Missing this place already...

just watched a bunch of demos. amazing how wtc1 wtc2 and wtc7 fell same way. to anyone who doesnt understand, top floors are damaged. bottom floors are undamaged. building falls and hits undamaged floors and slows down. thats why world trade center should have fallen alot slower. get it yet. george bush is a serial killer.
I am surprised this structure was demolished after only 24 years of service. Back in 2000 it was labeled as the largest structure in the world to be imploded. Does that record still hold true today?
I miss the kingdome, but watching it implode was quite a sight! We drove over to seattle to look at the wreckage and picked up a little chunk of it! The new stadiums arent nearly as iconic as the KD...
Sad day. The new stadiums (Quest and Safeco) are great and all but they don't compare in volume that this stadium produced. I remember the volume being deafening when Randy Johnson came out of the bullpen in the 1995 ALDS and they played Gun's and Roses "Welcome to the Jungle".
i have a part of old busch in a bag. they would of had to shut down the whole city to demolish it like this one. but for those of u tht arent familiar with the stadium the highway is right by it so that was in danger so they took a small reacking ball to take it down
Safeco was already there and Mariners were playing at that moment. On the Kingdome area was built the Seahawks stadium or Qwest Field, just next to Safeco.

Yeppers still holds true the kingdome is the largest stucture BY VOLUME imploded still. The tallest was the hudson building.

I loved being in there as a kid. Hearing how loud it could get inside of a dome, watching the indoor fireworks. Those were some great experiences.

'Cause it was like so five minutes ago. Why have one stadium for two sports teams, when you could have two sports stadiums for two teams.
