I did the same thing on my N8 and 5800XM.

On 5800XM, I can hold the camera 5-10mm away from the object (ants).

But on N8, I have to hold it less than 5mm away from the object to get it focus. Meaning that the ants are almost touching the lens. (disgusting...)
