Young guy here, I found this record at a flea market back in November and bought it on a whim, hadn't ever listened to Neil Young before. It is my favorite album! I've listened to it front to back more than 10 times since then, I really think it's a phenomenal piece of work. Mr. Young might've considered it over-produced but I think the complex layering of instruments (particularly in "What Did You Do" and "Here We Are") turned out very impressive and very listenable.
Great songs, but terrible production. Neil hates this record and how he was manipulated by the record company. Obviously, that never happened again! lol Long may you run!
@Darwins8n Oh please! He called it "Overdub City." He's never said he hates it. All the phonies think Neil only got good when he went grungy. I've been a fan since '66. LOVE this record AND Tonight's The Night. Stop trying to act cool. Nobody cares.
@Darwins8n I'm 54 and 2/3s and a rock writer who's interviewed Neil. . Saw The Springfield, Neil at The Bottom Line in 1974 and many other dates. And every hipster wannabe likes to cite that Neil only 'found himself' after he hooked up with Crazy Horse. And the first album is magic.
I don't know if I can be a hipster or a hipster wannabe at 52, but nowhere did I say "...Neil only 'found himself' after he hooked up with Crazy Horse." I only said I read in Shakey that he hated the production of "Neil Young". BTW, I love that record, too.

Read "Shakey". He clearly states he dislikes the production of this record and felt he lost control over what he wanted.
Nobody old enough to follow Neil since '66 would respond to my benign comment in such a sophomoric way.
