  • That's got to be one of the stranger sights in nature. I used to raise the critters down in Florida, although never in captivity; I had around 20 milkweed plants scattered around the yard as well as a few other hostplants for other species I was targeting, but I've still never seen this process in person. I've watched them hatch and air their wings, but never got to see them go into the chrysalis.

  • 2:30 tilt a whirl

  • sooo weird we watched that in science class once cuz we had monarch

  • 1:57 ughh my pants wont FIT!!

  • that looked extremly painful.

  • thats really cool :P

  • They go insearch of a place to spin their chrysalis and we don't get to see them after they eat. And we're left with devistated milkweed plants haha. And no emerging butterflies to show for the effort. anyone who can suggest some good ideas for a place to put them when they are done eating and appear ready to transform please let me know. I'm always heartbroken when we put the effort into rasing the cats and then they sneak off over night and spin their chrysalis somewhere else.

  • I am just now getting into growing the milkweed needed to bring the butterflies to lay their eggs. I have plenty of plants. But I need a place for them to spin their chrysalis safely. And they rarely spin it on the plants they feed on. Any suggestions??? Please help me out guys. I have built a small army of milkweed plants and put them in a sunny area of our yard that is rarely traveled through by anyone. But there is no place for them to spin their chrysalis so after they eat they disappear

  • This Video would still be good with some Heavy Metal music blasting

  • His buddy in front is like, "ok ok man, you got the thing off, quit writhing around already, I'm trying to concentrate!"LOL

As kids we kept monarchs and never saw what happened and could never figure out what the black bit was at the bottom of the cage until I finally saw it happen two summers ago. Very cool!

  • thank you for sharing this magical event.

  • Um...to me it looks like it might fall off.

  • how did u get so many

  • omg many cocoons!!

  • It's fun to raise caterpillars, however it can fall so put your hand under it so the crysalis is saved.

  • i dont think the one at the front really gets it lolxx um like do u need 2 have something 4 the caterpillars like a heated container or sumthing ?

  • this isnt real time is it/?

  • what fell off, its feet, head, or something else?

  • it's exoskeleton... mostly it's legs and head =]

  • Thank you for showing this wonderful video. I have been hatching out monarchs for several years and always miss this. Once I videoed 8 hours and caught it, but it wasn't as clear. Next week, I'm doing a class with 24 kids, and would like to show them your video, but no internet in the room and no wifi either, wonder if I can save it to my laptop?

  • Download real player and save it

  • what happens if you just flick one of those boogers right off?

  • if you take off a monarchs chrysalis, it dies and ants usually will eat it

  • and what happened from 3:16 - 3:20

a part of the caterpillar fell down

  • Sorry not get around to reply sooner.

What you are seeing is the outside skin that split open and slid up, falling away.

There are amny more pictures and explanations on my web-site.

  • youre annoying

  • how does that green thing on the caterpillar's body keep growing

its cool but im confused whats happening

  • Sorry not get around to reply sooner.

What you are seeing is the outside skin that split open and slid up. The green is the inside caterpillar, which now is the outside of the chrysalis or what some could call the cocoon.

Inside the Monarch butterfly is formed.

  • I remember we used to do these things in class, where we got a butterfly dome thingy and a little cup with alot of tiny catterpillars in it, and when they got to the top they changed, and it was soo cool, one morning we got to school and the butterfly came out of its cocoon! I'll never forget that.

  • Behold the power of that which is yet unborn! For the swirling images that flow forth from the Chrysalis are only a shadow of the sleeper's true power.

  • Very well said - the true Monarch has arisen!

  • AND IT IS HOLY!

  • it seems like that would be painful. How long do the catpillars usualy stay like that?

  • Don't think it painful as it is the natural thing to do. From catpillar to butterfly depend on the heat of the days in part but usually less than week - not keep count as rule.

  • that is super cool! who is your supplier of these live monarch caterpillars? Is milkweed available to the public? thanks for posting this vid.

  • Thank You to, sorry not get back sooner.

If you go to my web-site you will see that Milkweed grows wild, so find it, dig it up or use seeds. No supplier, all from eggs laid on my milkweed.

  • This is soo cool! Thanks for this! I have monarch caterpillars changed into chrysalis's right now! 2 went already today but I missed them. Hopefully I'll get to see one of the other two that are coming on!

  • That was way cool. I have always wanted to see something like that in live. I plan to do that soon, but am trying to figure how I can do it!. Good job on the video. Dave

  • ok so it just comes out of its back and grows on it?

  • The skin of the caterpilar splits open and the chrysalis is underneath. It is like sheading a skin but what is underneath is very different.

  • eww....but hey at least i learned something, thank you

  • Think of it this way. When a snake sheds its skin what is underneath or inside is very much the same creature as the skin it is shedding. With the caterpillar, what is inside is a totally different creature - a chrysalis, which can go no where, can't eat, etc. All it can do is change into a butterfly. The chrysalis is very much a skin that is shed and inside is a creature totally different in shape & form, just as the caterpillar was from the chrysalis.

  • OMG those are ALOT of chrysalis's!!!!! how did you raise that many caterpilars at the same time!!????were they a litter of eggs from a pregnant female?? they all look exactly the same, as if they all pupated at the same exact time. this is increadible! can you please tell me how you got so many of these jade jewels???

  • how did you raise that many caterpilars at the same time!!

    - give them all the Milkweed leaves they can eat and let them do their thing.

were they a litter of eggs from a pregnant female??

    - no eggs come one at a time, over the course of weeks this year.

  • they all look exactly the same, as if they all pupated at the same exact time.

    - that video is of just what was on the screen at that time - check out the web-address I sent you for more details.

can you please tell me how you got so many of these jade jewels???

    - not sure what you mean exactly. If you mean chrysalis, that is all explained on my web-pages. enjoy!

  • I'd always wondered how, exactly, they do that. Now I know, and I'm slightly creeped out-but wiser-for it. Thanks!
