No, actually the original song is in D minor and has chords like Dm9 G13 Cmaj9 Dm7 G7 Cmaj7 G7#5, but strummers could get by with Dm, G, C. That wouldn't have near the jazz feel as the original, but would be better than playing in the wrong key.

Just because Dm is the first chord of the song doesn't mean it says what key it is. The song follows a pretty basic ii-V-I progession just with jazzier chords. A good way to find the key is to listen to the vocal melody. It doesn't sound minor at all. You gotta use your ear a little more. And if you didn't notice, Hayley is playing Dm, G and C, so how are you saying it's in the wrong key?
