More American than apple pie and Old Glory. Steve was an American original. No one wrote songs like him and had such humility. The good always die young!!
Considering the choices that the BBWA have choosen as of late.,......This guy should be in the hall of Fame//...Better than some of the selections... Steve, you made us all feel good. And 25 years later you still do, and the Cubs still suck!@!!!
I got to see Steve Goodman play in Austin about a month before he died. It's one of those memories I hold dear. Being a Rangers fan I could sympathize as well.
Early in the 1997 season, the Cubs endured a 14 game losing streak. During that streak, prior to a game between the Ottawa Lynx and the Norfolk Tides, they played this song as Jetform Park in Ottawa. Rick Dempsey was managing Norfolk at the time and was signing autographs as the song was playing. Then he started to sing with us. It's funny the things you remember. That afternoon the Cubs snapped their losing streak and finally won a game.
Great song from an awesome song writer, Steve Goodman. I didn't know I was supposed to hate the Cubs when I was 5 years old, so they're still my 2nd favorite. When they win The Series someday, I'm heading to Chicago's Northside and be a part of The World's Biggest Party! Until then.....Go Cardinals! ; )
As a Yankee Fan I will say Steve Goodman Wrote Some great Songs Like City of New Orleans GO Cubs Go and this song A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request . Hang in their Cubbies you'll win it again one day ......
Thank G-d for the White Sox. If I were a Cub fan I would've slit my wrist after 1969, 1984, 2003, 2004, 2008... heck scratch that. Make it every year since 1908.
@IDF1987 yeah, you must feel so much better with your whopping 3 world series compared to our 2. Cardinals/Yankees fans would probably feel the same about being a White Sox fan. It's all relative I guess..
Teams aren't made up of players or championships, they're made up of fans and fond memories. The CUBS haven't given their fans a championship in a long time but they've more than made up for it in other ways; ways you can only understand when you walk up the tunnel for the first time and see greener grass and bluer skies than you thought possible. You get goosebumps every time and remember that the game in wrigley is good regardless of the score... It's baseball.
I am a CUBS fan. And if I could this song will be played when the time comes for my send off. The CUBBIES are #1 in my book. Thanks Ron. RIP my friend.
Go away blango882. Your casual use of profanity regarding the Cubs, their passionate fans, songwriters and their organization is best used, by you, somewhere else. You qualify as an asshole for even commenting on this song/topic and WHY WERE YOU WATCHING THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE?!? Go away and, as you said, you "have plenty of time to watch your team and hate the cubs." Sorry your life is so unsatisfactory that you have time to..."hate the Cubs." Poor you man.
WOW I think it's kind of funny how someone with so much hate spends so much time trying to explain why he hates. If I was one of Steve's 3 children I would feel sorry for you. But I'm not one of his children. Steve's family should be ultimately proud of the music he created. I'm proud to have something in common with Steve. I'll never leave a game without singing GO CUBS GO. "And stay away from the North Side blango882 your not welcome here."
@cubbies6738 i have plenty of time to watch my team and hate the cubs. this song is about how the cubs suck and haven't done shit in over 100 years. your team is known world wide for being LOSERS. maybe u should learn something from this song and all of the other cubs fans that died without seeing their team accomplish anything, and pick a new team.
@blango882 Dude seriously? Do you have nothing better to do? Not only that but this song was written by a dying cubs fan (the guy had leukemia) so knock that off, it's not nearly as funny as your half ass sense of humor must think it is. The cubs have had bad luck and aren't the best team but they have heart, from the ivy wall to home plate. And heart is what makes the cubs so amazing (it also seems to be something you are lacking) .
@ljtjrose sorry, didnt realize that some weed growing on a wall meant that a team has heart. maybe if your overpaid underachievers had some heart then they would win a few more games. and does heart really matter for a team? i would rather have championships then heart. and if the cubs are "amazing" what does a team have to do to be bad?
go cubs!. anybody with this genuine fellow on thier side got to have some kind of drag with the big guy. thank god for unrequited love because otherwise whose listening. life long red sox fan.

Goodbye Ronnie. I can still remember when you and Hubbs were the boys. You are together again now and God has an all Cubs double play combo. Rest in Peace. Like the great Tex Winter you will both probably make the HoF. It won't decrease the enjoyment of future generations. But, it will be sad not to see you on the stage in Cooperstown. Maybe they will be smart enough that Tex will be around for his induction.
Ill miss that old voice of Your's, Ron, when i listen to the Cubbies. Ill be seeing you sometime up there on that field of angels...Rest in peace my friend.
Ron was hero to a lot of us in many ways. He always held his head high and could give you that smile you expected from him. He will always be remembered .
Hard to believe Steve's been gone for over 26 years. Still one of my favorite songs which he wrote and made famous by David Allen Coe is "You Never Even Called Me By My Name" (aka "You Don't Have To Call Me Darlin"). As Steve put it, it was the perfect country & western song.
This was filmed shortly before Steve's death after a long-time battle with Leukemia...the irony was that he passed not long before the Cubs finally won the division in 1984...he was a great songwriter, and a Chicago Treasure...
I'm not a cubs fan, but Steve sure knows how to put a great baseball song together. I always get misty when I hear this song cause I sure miss Steve a lot.
this is a great video and i hate to admit but i sat and cried yesterday when they announced quade as new manager cause to me it is another 2 lost years
@hd28guy1 This guys little finger? Why do you say that? That's weird. I guarantee if this "GUY" wasn't dying then you wouldn't be saying "THIS GUYS LITTLE FINGER". That's just gay right there.
RIP Steve and Harry some day you'll win one. I am 66 and a lifelong Cardinal fan. But, I would give up a championship for you guys. You have earned it with your long time support of the team. I hope it is before Ron and Ernie pass they deserve to walk in glory.

@GoldSilverMoneySkull Hilarious? Cardinal fan huh? Says a lot about you people. You find a song hilarious that the guy wrote about himself. Steve Goodman is the Dying Cub fan ignorant douche.
@billoose i don't think its funny that he was a cubs fan and that he was dieing, i think its funny that a cubs fan would say this, i just don't like the dieing part, always next year, right?
@GoldSilverMoneySkull I'm a cub fan and didn't take offence to what you said. It is lighthearted. It is bloody funny no matter how dark the subject matter truly is.
I'm so happy that he's going to be honored in the Wrigleyville neighborhood by having the post office at Southport and Irving Park named after him. Previous Cub ownership really would not have allowed that to happen, partially due to this song! But honestly, it's the very best Cub song ever, because it captures the spirit so well! :-)
@multiversalpictures well whoopdy F'n doo you still suck at baseball while we still are a better baseball organization than you could ever dream to be

Steve Goodman is the Dying Cub fan ignorant douche.
billoose 1 year ago
@billoose i don't think its funny that he was a cubs fan and that he was dieing, i think its funny that a cubs fan would say this, i just don't like the dieing part, always next year, right?
GoldSilverMoneySkull 1 year ago
@GoldSilverMoneySkull I'm a cub fan and didn't take offence to what you said. It is lighthearted. It is bloody funny no matter how dark the subject matter truly is.
One of the great baseball songs.
