It wasn't what the Army wanted, it is an absolute fuel hog and troops can't use it as protection as they did with the Garbage Patton tanks (M47-60). The M1 kicked ass in Desert Storm (1991) but it was more of a hinderance in Enduring Freedom (2003). Tanks are a 1915 solution that evolved into the MBT. MBTs are obsolessant in 2011+
Go watch a clip featuring the Pzr III with the 50mm gun. THAT is the tank that Germany won all it's great victories with. A tank no better than it's typical opponents. None of the "heavies" that you all seem to be in such awe and rapture over even entered service until the result of the war had been pretty much decided already. Simple rule for WWII: in the 1st half the attacking side (usually Germany) has the advantage. In the 2nd half the advantage is with the defender (again usually Germany).
People believe this myth that GERMANY had the best tanks of WWII and it just is not so. Take France 1940. Not only did Hitler have less tanks than the French/British (<1-2) but 1/3D of it was absolute junk (PzKPfw Is/IIs) and 25% was obsolessant Czech stuff (Pz35s/38s). NO German tank could take on a Char B bis, a Matilda II or a Summa tank. Hitler would have lost in France had he fought with the original Case Yellow channel port thrust plan. Luck and training won it for him!
For example, 1,500 Tiger IIs were ordered, but the production was severely disrupted by Allied bombing. Five raids between 22 September and 7 October 1944 destroyed 95 percent of the floor area of the Henschel plant. It is estimated that this caused the loss in production of some 657 king tigers.

You do know that the 37mm was never designed to tackle such heavy vehicle, saying that it;s useless because it couldn't penetrate those vehicle is just absurd.
Also the 7.5cm L24 porved to be one of the better anti-tank weapons during the invasion of france, it certainly got alot better when it received HEAT rounds.
You can say a lot of Luck that the French high command was so set into WWII beeing a repeat of WWI, the old dated design specs of many french tanks, 1 man turret was a huge hinderance.
The french army was perfected trained and equipped for another WWI, sadly for them that is not how the german played.
I don't get these people who glorify the WWII German tanks. Not only did the Germans lose the war, but they lost the major tank engagements with these "remarkable" tanks. Sure on an individual, "one for one" level, these tanks were better. But they were so over-built that Germany couldn't come close to matching either front one for one, let alone both. These super tanks actually helped end the third reich faster.

@thethirdwinter If these tanks were in the same numbers the British flooded the battlefield with ( america did little in WW2 according to most Europeans ) but most of the tanks were Sherman's ( built by the british even though they were american tanks again most euros think american did nothing in ww2 ) normally the battlefield was a 10-1 in these tanks numbers always win. IF there were equal numbers the british would have been hurt bad.

@ssmusic214 what people always overlook is that not only is the metal a limited ressource, but also the men who drive it. Germany created a fine cadre of tankers, the tiger crews were considered the best of the best, an elite. Now if you compare how much ressources you have to spend (fuel) to get an experienced crew with thousands of hours operation time in their record, "wasting" ressources on a tiger tank is in a completely different light, if it helps to keep the elite crew alive!
I agree. Having the best isn't necessarily the best thing. THE MOST LETHAL TANK IN WWII wasn't even a tank; it was the lowly German STUG IIIG (late) armed with the outstanding 75mm STUK40 L48 gun which was SOTA up to early 1945. The Kill ratios on Stugs were like 20-1 or more when used defensively. You are right about the Tiger---way way too expensive for the measly 1300 produced from 1942-1944
@ssmusic214 since the allies always outnumbered the axis, personnelwise, giving your men wonderweapons is a good idea, because then they have a chance to even and maybe overcome the odds. Had germany build shermans, t-34s etc., the allies would have won simply by numbers.
@ssmusic214 Before declaring war to USA, yes they did had lots of chances. They had the most advanced war technology also, and their troops were very cunning and effective. Russian won by simply using numbers and few elite experienced troops. Most of the USSR army however was made of reserve troops and unexperienced young people. The USSR generals were also not as good as Germany's. Hitler screwed it however himself, which is ironic.
@catalinaga Nazi Germany did not declare war on the US, they declared war on the Axis which included nazi Germany. And the Soviets mastered a tactic the Shermans used, they had well over 10 T-34s for one Tiger I and with a 85mm cannon they could take them down easily the bash that together with supreme speed and angry Russians and you have a nasty looking attack.

Truth be know. there were only about 2,000 Tigers available during the war. The Panther was a better tank in that it copied the Russian T34 with sloping sides. This allowed shells to bounce off. But, it was produced too late in the war to be of great effect.
As for the Sherman, the Tiger was a better tank. But, there were at least 20,000 Sherman's deployed. By shear numbers the Sherman overcame the Tiger..
The Tiger was a brilliant tank but even a simple sherman, using its speed, could disable the tracks and buy time to fire from a close range to its rear.
@redshark618 Actually if a lucky shot hits the turret ring or manages to disable the gun in anway the tigers slow turning speed wouldnt help much. We also have to think about Sherman varient the Firefly could contest with tigers at extremley long rangers 1v1 easily.
The Tiger was faster and more manuvrble cross-country than the Sherman .
Also the 17 pounder , tho a decent gun was rarelly able to hit anything passed 1000 m , and beyond that it was quite innefective against the Tiger`s frontal armour . While the Tiger`s 88mm L56 was dead accurate at 1800 m , and could even take out a Sherman 2500 m away without problems . Just so you know , the L56 at 1800m had a 98% hit rate, while at 2500m the % was 71% in practice. Very very accurate gun .

@Dolmatal I don't know about that, but from what I know, Tigers and Panthers had quite good score against IS tanks, usually due to superior tactics and experience. However, real German counterpart to IS2 was Tiger II, or King Tiger - ISII entered Soviet army around month after Tiger II entered service in German army.

@Picard578 A rethinking of the Panther T-34. In general, Russian tanks first used in sloped armor, and then the Germans started to use it in Panther and King Tiger. King Tiger tank failed, it has more disadvantages than advantages.

On 17 May '40 French Char B1 medium tanks belonging to the 2nd DCR set out to attempt to delay German forces advancing in the rear of the French 9th Army. They cut across behind the lead elements of the 7th Panzer Division and entered the town of Landrecies which was full of German troops and vehicles. The two French tanks, nicknamed "Mistral" & "Tunisie" then proceeded to wreck everything they came upon, destroying dozens of German vehicles. Sadly, it's only "cool" when it's a Tiger doing it?

0:46 Tiger stuck. It was strictly prohibited for Tiger to tow another Tiger (would ruin the engine and transmission immediately). Took 2 or 3 towers to tow Tiger. It was logistical nightmare. 1/2 of Tigers I/II in Western Europe were destroyed by Germans themselves.

It's okay to admire the technology of the day, but that was then. Let's skip the part about "greatest tank ever built" shall we? The current Abrhams Main Battle Tank rules the turf.
As for all this jabbering about how the British did this and that, and the Americans 'didn't do much' -- I'd say 418,000 US military losses was a fine contribution. You really need to remove your head from your Limey arse, mate. Most of Europe would still be goose-stepping today if not for the US.

@BillsCatz I wouldn't crow too loud about the Chrysler bail-out tank (M1A2 Abrams tank). It wasn't what the Army wanted, it is an absolute fuel hog and troops can't use it as protection as they did with the Garbage Patton tanks (M47-60). The M1 kicked ass in Desert Storm (1991) but it was more of a hinderance in Enduring Freedom (2003). Tanks are a 1915 solution that evolved into the MBT. MBTs are obsolessant in 2011+

Go watch a clip featuring the Pzr III with the 50mm gun. THAT is the tank that Germany won all it's great victories with. A tank no better than it's typical opponents. None of the "heavies" that you all seem to be in such awe and rapture over even entered service until the result of the war had been pretty much decided already. Simple rule for WWII: in the 1st half the attacking side (usually Germany) has the advantage. In the 2nd half the advantage is with the defender (again usually Germany).

People believe this myth that GERMANY had the best tanks of WWII and it just is not so. Take France 1940. Not only did Hitler have less tanks than the French/British (<1-2) but 1/3D of it was absolute junk (PzKPfw Is/IIs) and 25% was obsolessant Czech stuff (Pz35s/38s). NO German tank could take on a Char B bis, a Matilda II or a Summa tank. Hitler would have lost in France had he fought with the original Case Yellow channel port thrust plan. Luck and training won it for him!

We shouldn't forget the otherside of the manufacturing of the German Tigers and Panthers. Don't forget the allied bombers, always bombing their factories and making production harder. The german oil fields were also bombed. No oil = no fuel. No factory = no tank.

You do know that the 37mm was never designed to tackle such heavy vehicle, saying that it;s useless because it couldn't penetrate those vehicle is just absurd.
Also the 7.5cm L24 porved to be one of the better anti-tank weapons during the invasion of france, it certainly got alot better when it received HEAT rounds.

I don't get these people who glorify the WWII German tanks. Not only did the Germans lose the war, but they lost the major tank engagements with these "remarkable" tanks. Sure on an individual, "one for one" level, these tanks were better. But they were so over-built that Germany couldn't come close to matching either front one for one, let alone both. These super tanks actually helped end the third reich faster.

@thethirdwinter If these tanks were in the same numbers the British flooded the battlefield with ( america did little in WW2 according to most Europeans ) but most of the tanks were Sherman's ( built by the british even though they were american tanks again most euros think american did nothing in ww2 ) normally the battlefield was a 10-1 in these tanks numbers always win. IF there were equal numbers the british would have been hurt bad.

@ssmusic214 what people always overlook is that not only is the metal a limited ressource, but also the men who drive it. Germany created a fine cadre of tankers, the tiger crews were considered the best of the best, an elite. Now if you compare how much ressources you have to spend (fuel) to get an experienced crew with thousands of hours operation time in their record, "wasting" ressources on a tiger tank is in a completely different light, if it helps to keep the elite crew alive!

I agree. Having the best isn't necessarily the best thing. THE MOST LETHAL TANK IN WWII wasn't even a tank; it was the lowly German STUG IIIG (late) armed with the outstanding 75mm STUK40 L48 gun which was SOTA up to early 1945. The Kill ratios on Stugs were like 20-1 or more when used defensively. You are right about the Tiger---way way too expensive for the measly 1300 produced from 1942-1944

@ssmusic214 Before declaring war to USA, yes they did had lots of chances. They had the most advanced war technology also, and their troops were very cunning and effective. Russian won by simply using numbers and few elite experienced troops. Most of the USSR army however was made of reserve troops and unexperienced young people. The USSR generals were also not as good as Germany's. Hitler screwed it however himself, which is ironic.

And the Soviets mastered a tactic the Shermans used, they had well over 10 T-34s for one Tiger I and with a 85mm cannon they could take them down easily the bash that together with supreme speed and angry Russians and you have a nasty looking attack.

Truth be know. there were only about 2,000 Tigers available during the war. The Panther was a better tank in that it copied the Russian T34 with sloping sides. This allowed shells to bounce off. But, it was produced too late in the war to be of great effect.
As for the Sherman, the Tiger was a better tank. But, there were at least 20,000 Sherman's deployed. By shear numbers the Sherman overcame the Tiger..

@redshark618 Actually if a lucky shot hits the turret ring or manages to disable the gun in anway the tigers slow turning speed wouldnt help much. We also have to think about Sherman varient the Firefly could contest with tigers at extremley long rangers 1v1 easily.

The Tiger was faster and more manuvrble cross-country than the Sherman .
Also the 17 pounder , tho a decent gun was rarelly able to hit anything passed 1000 m , and beyond that it was quite innefective against the Tiger`s frontal armour . While the Tiger`s 88mm L56 was dead accurate at 1800 m , and could even take out a Sherman 2500 m away without problems . Just so you know , the L56 at 1800m had a 98% hit rate, while at 2500m the % was 71% in practice. Very very accurate gun .
