I struggled forever trying to figure out how Xehanort=Xenmas.

Then I realized that it doesn't. Xenmas=Ansem.

The main antagonist from Kingdom Hearts 1, and of Riku's story. His true name is Xehanort, but once he became a Heartless, he changed his name and started using the Heartless to obtain his goal using Kingdom Heart's true power to destroy all worlds. Sora kicked his ass, sealed up Kingdom Hearts, and ended up at Castle Oblivion. Meanwhile, since "Ansem" Possessed Riku, Riku had him in his heart, so he goes through the Castle and kills him again. That's the 500 character story anyway.
