  • Has anyone seen the "chicken bone house"as my family calls it.

  • @vietnameiscool What is the chicken bone house? sounds interesting.

  • @dmccoig OK so I'm going to explain the whole house to you.At the entrance their is the bone.On the inside (don't worry, its legal) is a normal house in Elkmont : empty rooms and bugs.In the backyard there's a wooden trail that leads to a separate room. When me and my cousin went inside,we found some perfume bottles that were new and other beauty products.

  • Thank you for this video, I have been in Tenn all week and knew I was going to check out elkmont. This video was awesome and has me excited about tomorrow morning.

  • @twiztidbagz Hey Jeff, That is so cool, let me know what it looks like? and have fun

  • @dmccoig

Well, we spent all day at elkmont, walked around and took a ton of photos. I read they are going to stop the deterioration of the buildings. We walked around the main strip and a few back trails. Saw most of the things I wanted to see... the one thing I did not see is the old stair case that led to the train tracks that brought people to the vacation homes. Once I get home I will throw a photo montage together and create a video reply.

  • I dig this channel. Like a mini American history e-book.

  • @LostandFoundTravel Thanks Lost and Found!

  • I think these homes should be restored and kept on the smokey Mountains National parks as our history. Not to tear down the structures but to keep our heritage living on for our future generations.

  • @mcbostic That is an interesting idea. The park service rents old small cabins on top of Mount LeConte, why not restore these old cottages and rent them to tourists ....

  • all my people are from elkmont ..do you know or know of Lem Ownby ? they built Wonderland on his property

  • @redheadmichelle That is very cool, yes we have heard the Ownby name. It is in every cemetery up there! We love the Wonderland and wish we could have stayed a night or two there.

  • stupid why not just let people come and enjoy the place stay and share in the up keep and repairs fun for kids a get away

  • I live in the area (Sevierville) and my thought is if it was built primitive ( hewn logs, wooden shakes, hand forged nails) materials from the area it should be perserved like what you see in Cades Cove and Cherokee Orchard. Structeures built with modern materials ( modern framing, asphalt shingles, sheet rock) items that had to be brought into the aera should be removed. Right or wrong thats just my opinion.

  • I would like to think these buildings were being preserved '... it would be a shame to

to let the buildings rot or be tore down' after all it's part of American history plus it's not as if the buildings dont fit in with the surroundings' I believe the buildings add extra intrest to the area .

  • heibin total ungezogen heute wer will mit mir camn der kann sich ja melden

  • The book "SYNC" by Steven Strogatz mentions Elkmont and its fireflies. It seems that this is the only place in the Western Hemisphere where the fireflies flash in sincronization. In the book, someone from Elkmont said of the fireflies: they start up in mid June around 10 pm and "exhibit 6 seconds of total darkness; then in perfect sync, thousands light up 6 rapid times in a 3 second period before all going dark for 6 more seconds." Similar syncronisity of fireflies happens in Asia and Africa.

  • that also happens in southern indiana

  • I don't understand why they couldn't rent these out. It doesn't need to be paved or changed. Just fix up the houses. I would love to rent one of these houses. It is so with nature with trees at every turn and NO CONCRETE which is what people who love nature want anyway.

  • Because if you want to rent a freaking cabin, then go into Gatlinburg or Pigeon's Forge or Cherokee or any one of the other tourist hellholes to do that. The Great Smoky Mountains was created to preserve the wilderness, not to give people yet another lodging choice.

  • @JamesRobertSmith spoken like the nazi green party idiot you are.

  • beautiful area but feel sad that habitats are destroying natural surroundings. It's sad we often forget where we came from; nature.

.. and we don't even think twice to our actions to what we could be doing. 2:08 was a beautiful scene there all is great.thank you for sharing.

    friend,

    ruben

  • i understand whot you meen but the houses are already there it just seems a shame not to use them or worse start ripping trees out all over to build another big hotel with 5000 rooms and a massive car park then every thing you wont to go see will be gone forever so i say keep these little cabins and enjoy your country side that way its more fun that way any way bye from lee in england

  • i still love this place and would move straight away just one thing can somebody please tell me the lottery numbers im sure its my turn this weak

  • It is heartbreaking to see the way these homes have been allowed to ruin. Hopefully a decision will be reached soon to allow for the restoration of some of these historically signifigant homes. The Applachian club was a part of the Great Smokies history.

  • With the UN administrating this area under the guise of a "Biosphere" I'm surprised they let you in to film it.

  • nature should take over the homes, it is the park's land now, and the people have come and gone, it's time to allow the park to re-vamp itself after humans almost ruined it

  • Thanks cewing, boy it really was a bald area in the 1930s!

    Thanks for your comment

    Dan

  • My 85 year old great uncle was forced from his home. The park has thousands and thousands of acres of "natural environments". Why does the park service feel all human history should be removed from the park? It is sad that they have let them ruin. the most popular area of the park is Cades Cove...WHY? People want to know the history of the land and the people who lived there. It is ok to build concrete camping grounds and parking lots but not preserve the history of those who lived there?

  • @cewing2301 ahhh it is always nice to hear from a tree hugging liberal.

  • @cewing2301 Yeah, they need to fall down and rot. Can't wait to see them all go.

  • @cewing2301 I am happy to see these ratty structures rotting into the forest floor. The sooner the forest reclaims them the better!

  • @cewing2301 Agreed. I am so glad to see these places rot into the ground.

  • Love you channel and I love nature, been to the Smoky Mountian's many, many time's both as a child with my parents and as a adult. Also been to the Colorado Rockie's, and after my father retired he moved to the Ozark mountian's outside of Farmington Mo.keep up the great work and please visit the Ozark Mountian's lots of interesting place's there also

  • I would love to see you do a segment on the beautiful and just as remote Ozark Mountains of rural Missouri. The majesty and beauty of the ozarks is a wonder to behole.

  • Thanks Bullmoose, you may have to do that one, I did go to MO when I was young, Merrimac Caverns, Grants Farm etc

    It was great

  • tell ya what, I would love to, especially of you are financing the expedition. LOL

  • I understand, about the only thing we are financing these days are the electric and gas companies.

  • I'm going to hit Tenn this fall on a week vacation trip

  • Awesome James!

Let us know where you go!

  • Hey Dan - why don't you remove some of the senseless garbage people have found necessary to add to this comment section? Spoils the reading of comments to keep tripping over nonsense.

  • Love that fiddle!

Really great video and information, keep em coming.

  • Great Video and storyteller. This made it easy for me to show my friends why I visit the elkmont area every year! Thank you so much! You put me right back there!

  • SAVE THESE HOUSES!!!

  • GSMNP, take from the people and give it to the privileged. Same as the Soviet Union used to do while proclaiming that they were doing "whatever" for the good of the people. There are too many examples to name where the NPS has sought to remove our freedom of using the park. Shame on you NPS.

  • Thanks for creating and posting this interesting history. As a boy, I frequented the cabins of Elkmont as a guest of the Tate family. The land there is a truly a special place, and it is sad to see it claimed by the intentional neglect of the park service.

  • wat ever

  • yeah looks nice id go camping there ; ) doesnt look run down or dirty just uninhabited

  • qwerty

  • Very nice please preserve this place.

    John

  • Thanks John, it is a treasure.

  • It should be saved as part of it's heritage. A majority of the worlds working people would rather see where the workers lived.

  • Thanks avanzatotrxx

I think you are right about the working folk. It is a part of history that is often left out of the books in any real meaningful way.

  • i love the great smoky mountains,i would live there if i could. all homes should be preserved, and decides there are plenty of places one can go to get away from them if they didnt want to see historical homes.... dmc thanks for the videos...by the way whats your favorite place in the smokys, for me thats hard too say, but i think roaring fork is one of them (and i love the houses there too) im going to focus this year on thails near the del rio tn the home of "christy" and "cutters gap"

  • Del Rio has a great and rich history, worth telling!

  • I camp in Elkmont every summer! I would hate to see those cabins go!! They make up part of the experience. I love to walk up toward the Jake's Gap trail head and look at all the old places along the way! I can't wait to go this summer!

  • Thanks rschli1,

It is one of our favorite places in the world.

  • Ghost Towns are a rare spectacle. I say keep it.

  • where about is this place in the park area ?

  • It is 7 miles from Gatlinburg heading toward Townnsend, just look for the Elkmont Campground, But when you get to the campground,(look across the street and you can see the stone steps up the hill to the Wonderland Hotel site) keep going up the road and you will run into them.

  • Just Leave them be... they aint hurting nothing!

  • Thanks lilredrunningshoe

I like the way you think

  • Gotta love Tennessee!

  • GO VOLS!

at least Go Lady Vols :)

  • I think that this historic vacation community should be maintained. It is so beautiful up there!

  • Thanks pavlos999

    I agree

  • Tear them down , they were only homes for the rich people who had political connections. All the poor folks were kicked out by the park service years ago.

  • How many homeless people could find a home here?

  • None, they'd have to pay to get into the park, then they'd have to pay tresspassing fines.

  • Fines yes, but the Smoky Mountains National Park doesn't charge to get in. One of the reasons we love it.

    Dan

  • Wow, that quite a place! I'd love to see those houses. It's a shame if they're falling into disrepair. I'm so glad you could film them before they disappear... Still, perhaps your video will raise some awareness so someone will take action to preserve them. Fingers crossed. Dan =:)

  • Thanks much dan9tee,

I think they will pick some to save and others to scrape, it is awesome up there though

    Dan

  • Seem the neglect may be due to the 1982 managment plan to remove the structures, no one would invest in development under that plan. But maybe the subsequent Historic district ruling will change that. Seems like two government agencies will spend our taxes trying to solve the dilemma. Beautiful video footage and narration, educational as well.

  • I love this video. Thanks for recording it.

  • On top of old Smokey

    All covered with cheese

    I lost my poor meatball

    When somebody sneezed

Hey Dan! Great video! What's that link to buy Tee shirts, and coffee cups?

  • If it was in England (UK) I'm sure someone would preserve it. It could be resurrected as a holiday location, an escape?

  • Perhaps a movie production company would be interested in using them for a project.

That way they could be restored AND government money would not have to be used.

  • Save the Ghosts!

Who ya gonna call? Thanks, and congrats Dan!

  • I did!

    Thanks

    Dan

  • I would recycle as much of original materials used in the cottages to refurbish them. Save them.

Offer me one, and I will pack up and get the hell out of the city! In the future, a Mega Walmart with be adjacent to a National Park.

  • i would rather watch paint dry than this guy reading from cue cards in the most monotone voice conceivable

  • Leave the land and remove the houses.

  • Stop playing that Violin !!! Pave that crap over and make room for new life.

  • Dmb people who build houses out of wood and expect it to last long?! Start learning to build your houses out of bricks fgs.

  • if i subscribed to the "who gives a chit" channel i would love this video

  • If I subscribed to the "I'm a complete retard for watching a video that I don't care about" channel, I would love this comment.

  • If you take the time to visit this place you will want it preserved too. Too bad the Park Service never has funds for this type of work anymore. Maybe corporate adoption would work, get Georgia/Pacific to repair one etc.

  • guess what? people were willing and the government said no thank you - it wouldn't have cost to repair - and then "the People" could have enjoyed - too bad life is so political.

  • Yeah, Don't care.

  • Most houses shown there are little more than wooden shacks. I don't see what is to be preserved.

  • buraya ne olmuş a.q

  • Great record of a faded time - gentle and humble production - worthy effort - thanks for your passion and concern. Will be an invaluable record for what I hope is ongoing careful management...

  • xzvr1 your just as bad as everyone else.

  • You can always tell an idiot by the words they speak, case in point here. Guess that's why your name is Tyrant, it's fitting.

  • HAHAHAAA historical man you americans just have no culture in my city was established in 1300 and some hoeses are over 500 years old and you call these ugly houses wich are maybe 50 years old historical LOL!!!

  • my country was found way back in 681 but u still dont see me wavin my d*** n hatin..

  • haha bulgaria was not founded in 681 they where one country with austria till hmm i think 1890. omg

  • man so f***in ignorant. the least u could do was to check out wikipedia. austraia was never near to village then. did you know that the asians built the chinese wall to protect themselves from the bulgarian empire... we were one of the few that could stand against the roman and otoman empire. in the ears 893-927 bulgaria touched the black, the white, and the adriatic seas. we've been here for 13 centuries... austria aint s***

  • congratulations ^^ but today you´re just a piece of shit germany has to pay for. what did your country invent whats relevant for the humanity?(german inventions: car, phone, TV, nozzle engine, diesel engine, helicopter...etc..) and why you didnt won the wc ´54 :D

  • John Atanasov, the man who invetnted the first computer was bulgarian. have you ever tasted bulgarian youghurt? or

  • bulgarians where the first to use airplanes as bombers. and btw u were talking about austro-hungaria... yeah now our country is very poor. but when we were in our golden ages, most of the countries today didn't even exist. they were just a bunch of tribes. we hav a couple of novelists too, but because of the communism we're unable to receive them... and don't worry we returned your money...

  • every land has novelists its not special. and atanasoff was born in the usa... no i never tried yoghurt from bulgaria i dont know what there should be special about it and im sure german yogurth with milk from happy cows from the alps ^^ is better. but whats important about such shit? who cares? and its just another sign that we are just better if u see that we made more in less time. your ancestors just stood at one place and were stupid farmers

  • ur so full of shit... if it wasnt for the 500 years of otoman yoke who knows what our country would look like... and the special bout our milk is not in the happy cows... there is bacterium Lactobacillus bulgaricus... if you intend on reading more facts about my country and arguing with me, we can go on. bu t since ur so blinded by the german's supremacy there's no point in waisting my time with you... and btw we were one of the country to save our jews...

  • i just joked about happy cows because nobody is interested in yoghurt. you can be very very proud of this bacterium really congratulations...!

  • They should fix them up and give them to the homeless and all the uninsurable in Tennessee or give it back to the CHEROKEE the land you people stole from them

  • rotflmao

  • Right on!

  • very interesting. I like the feeling of uncovering secrets before the masses get to them.

  • this film will be priceless the moment they do remove everything from that land. what else would they look at if there is nothing else to see of that place?

  • say the elkmont community! i wish i could be there, looks really soothing.

  • save*

  • I'm sure there are some buildings in that community that are worth saving and fixing up but I doubt all of them are.

  • Why do we cling to the past? Because, some of us(yourself excluded),know we are doomed to repeat the same mistakes of the "past",if we don't respect it. If you find yourself scratching your noggin, thinkin',Huh? Don't be afaraid,it's just the contents of that little brain, trying hard to keep up. Have a nice day. James : (

  • why do we cling to the past?

  • That was an exquisite piece of filmmaking - and a marvelous example of putting youtube to good use!

  • I dont mean to criticize but if you want to save it why did the camera person zoom in on the hole in the floor in front of the front door.

  • Thanks tailsinspace,

I didnt see any, I have however been haunted by the list of things I need to work on around the house, instead of making videos!

    again Thanks

    Dan

  • love it

  • Thanks ritagblue,

    It is nice to hear.

    Dan

  • Ummm wow. I just seen ghost in title and expected to be O_O wowzd. But nvm. *gets down to this grrrreeeeatttttt music* Not. :-D

  • Thanks Rusted glass,

Several people have said so, and i thought about re-editing about a minute into it and screaming like the other ghost videos.. I may do the next one that way

    Dan

  • I learned something here. I thought ghost towns was pretty much a phenomenon of the western U.S. (of which there are plenty). I hope at least some of the better preserved buildings can be saved.

  • I have too FallonBill,

so many folks have written to tell me about more Ghost towns here in the south.. We are going to see one this weekend up in WV

    Thanks

    Dan

  • I HATE CHIPMUNKS

  • I do to, but hate Moles more.. the only way to get rid of moles is to die first!

    Thanks

    Dan

  • Why was I expecting ghost stuff? Oh well...

  • thats wacko i was expecting the same thing fo r33l

  • I'm sorry MpLog4n15,

    *see comment to Rusted glass.

thanks for taking the time to comment

    Dan

  • Sorry reformedfruit,

I have had several comments expecting ghosts. There is a mansion in Charleston SC that claims to actually have ghosts.. we are going to check it out soon.

    thanks

    Dan

  • Thanks for taking the time to reply. This video is actually pretty cool, I just misread the title while tube-surfing.

    Best of luck to you.

  • Muy emotivo video, lamentablemente dudo que Elkmont vuelva a ser lo mismo de antes, por lo tanto inmortalizarlo en imagenes fué lo mejor que pudieron hacer.

  • I dont speak this launguage, I barely speak english correctly.. translation anyone?

    Thanks (I hope)

    Dan

  • Translation

Emotive video, unfortunally I don't think Elkmont town could back to be the same, so then, inmortalize it in images is the best you can do

    Best regards

  • i don't get it.

  • I didnt either the first time I watched it hypergamer8789.

I didnt plan to post, but decided to just because I didnt figure more than 3-4 people would watch it..

    Thanks for commenting

    Dan

  • poop!!!!

  • mtraboulay2002's comments were so unbelievable it moved me to sign up for You Tube just so I could respond. You obviously know absolutely nothing about the Southern United States and are so blinded by your ignorance and prejudice that you missed the video's point all together. The hasty generalizations you make about slave owners and Halliburton are hillarious. Just remember, when we choose to reduce it to witing we expose a little bit of ourselves for all to see as I am happy to do.

  • i thought this place was guna be like haunted && like c ghosts this is definately not that

  • relly?wow that wolud be sumthin.if this actually works...thank you(aaaaalleelluyaaa)

  • If I ever do see a ghost looking back at me, there be no tape of it.. unless the ghost picks up my camera and posts a vid on YouTube!

    Thanks

    Dan

  • I'm sure this video served your purpose, but I kept expecting to see a ghost. . . Something more alluring. I loved the music and the pics although it moved rather slow. So I would say I'm a little disappointed.

  • So sorry maggielaneink.

I agree it could have been much better

    thanks

    Dan

  • *yawn* this was soo flipping boring *yawn*

  • Your not kidding, I saw a comment about sleeping on a desk in elementary school. Thats what I would be doing if I didnt like history and old houses!

Thanks, I try to post more vibrant videos

    dan

  • are you serious, man this is the most mundane use of you tube ever.First of its intresting that you want to revive something that was made by racist elitist slave owners, ya dang nabbit such a shame.

second of all if you fixed it up, only rich people would be able to buy them.

so you must be some oil tycoon from haliburton that wants his own select social club .

sorry....i just have a real distaste for the south.

  • So you know for a fact that it was built by slave owners? The place wasn't even built until 1908. This place needs to be saved as a historical landmark. Your prejudices toward the south seem VERY unfounded.

  • Thank you hothotheat,

I know its usually the other way around? I do hear people in the south disrespectful to the folks from up north, but the reverse is more rare.

    Thanks

    Dan

  • The folks from East Tennessee were very poor and mostly didn't own slaves. They also sided with the North during the Civil War. The Scots-Irish were so independent they succeded from the succession.

    Thank You for your comments.

And I am southern, but if you check your Canadian history my Generations go back to Archibald McCoig an elected Gov. Member of your country.

    Thanks you for commenting

    Dan

  • I feel like im in elementry... I just wish i could turn out the lights at my desk and fall asleep.

  • I feel your pain, I slept a great deal in school to video/films just like this .. so sorry to bore!

    Thanks for commenting

    Dan

  • it wasnt boring... It jus brought back memories!

  • The shot of the running brook made me Really want to be there, thanks.

  • Thanks surf2Jesus,

The streams are cold like they are nearly frozen and clear. I wish I were there as well now..

    Dan

  • if you want to bring the past alive, visit Williamsburg, Va. now that is a place to restore an visit the past. Shacks are a plenty in the south and

enter-city, believe me, I know, I'm from eastern KY.

  • Cool jackmaggard,

We are going to Williamsburg later this summer, I really love Eastern KY, have been many times through the Cumberland Gap. But Berea? is my favorite part of KY , oh that and DOGPATCH on hwy 75 exit 41 I think?

    Thanks

    Dan

  • Love the music

  • Thanks yousignhere,

I called Nick on the phone and told him about your comment.

He is a wonderfully talented Mississippian!

    Kind regards

    Dan

  • I think it's great to see people so interested in the past. It's to those in the past that we even have the future. I think it should be saved and taken care of. People 10 years down the road even sooner would love to see the Ghost Town of Elkmont Houses. I love Ghost Towns. Good work. I loved the music in the back ground also. I hope everything comes out the way you hope.

  • search for The Real Silent Hill, it's where the idea from the game and movie came from, it's tight

  • Thank you beth for your great comments..

I agree it is wonderful the debate that appears to have taken over this little video.

    It is fun as well

    Thanks

    Dan

  • best sleep i got in my life! XD
