It's so unfortunate that the people of today always tell me how much better it is to live now than then when really it boils down to having the "things" we have today that they didn't then. Suddenly all else about life is forgotten and replaced by stuff. Granted some things make life easier but in fact we have become so dependent on and obsessed with "things" we have forgotten how to notice life, how to notice each other, how to use our minds. We've lost the sense of what matters more.
@kennethj1956 Not all blacks were enslaved even during the days of slavery. Slavery was abolished in the 1860s and even those who were were not always mistreated. We romanticize certain things and it's become so common to romanticize also this idea that all slaves were martyrs for white civility and scarred and abused. There were plenty of whites who were treated unkindly as well.
@BreezesofConey ..... My ancestors were slaves . My grandmother told me all the scars her older relatives had across their backs and the continual raping of the women & girls. Sorry, but i don't see anything "romantic" about this painful reality. ...But I see you have painted a convenient picture for yourself to excuse the horrific atrocities of the past......FACT: The whites had freedom and could leave an "unkind" situation. FACT: We Slaves could not leave.
@kennethj1956 Slavery had been gone for decades by the time any of these pictures were taken. Time to move on and stop using the race card. A lot of people's ancestors were mistreated too, not just blacks. In some parts of Europe and the US, Irish, Jews and Italians were considered just as "bad" as being black.
What people miss about these films is the nice way people dressed, and their manners. It's that part of society they long for, not the less savory racist legacy.
@doctorw2 i agree :) while i have short hair i always wear a proper hat or flower with my hair done in a very classical style. Always a skirt or well dressed as that is what i was taught. My grandparents were born in the 1800's and i am only 30 but age doesn't seem to show in our family
@Elewyn i just got a glimmer at your you tube channel and i have to say you have the beauty that steals a blokes heart and soul. your a real priceless jewel.
@doctorw2 many thanks for such a kind and generous compliment!! i do try to honor the virtues that i was so taught and feel that true beauty comes from strength of character and self compusre. That said i feel so drawn to the days of my grandparents and my mother says i look more and more like my grandmother with each passing day. I often wear my hair very much done in a victorian style and prefer a long sweeping skirt. Your compliment means so very much to me.
Ugh. I'm glad that I didn't have to live through that era of big hair & uncomfortable, voluminous clothes. I've worked with old folks who remember the corsets, the heavy clothes even in hottest weather, the chaffing, the boils from the restrictive clothing. (Most people did not live in the rarefied world of these posed photos.) Oh the joy of outhouses & horse poop in the road. And remember folks, bath night is on Saturdays.
I, too have talked to older people (actually I have 2 older friends, 1 of them passed away just a few months shy of her 100th birthday last year :( ). Yes, times were HARDER back then and life was NOT as "simple". These pictures are BEAUTIFUL. Of course, nowadays, women have a CHOICES, which makes me RESPECT the WOMEN of that time all the MORE. I would LOVE to dress like them now but within reason, meaning NO 13" WAIST or stifling clothing during summers for this girlie! =)
I agree with londonhumanoid. I believe (correct me if I'm wrong londonhumanoid) that "proper beauty" goes WAY BEYOND just a pretty face or figure. It has to do with how a woman carries herself and how she dresses. With CLASS. Sure these women may not "look" like Kim Kardashian or any other female star that has a nice body and/or beautiful face (thanks to A LOT of MAKEUP and/or plastic surgery for MOST of them lol) but these ladies ARE still beautiful in my eyes. Note, I said LADY. =)
Glad to see some people here agree with me. The ideals of beauty have changed in modern society. There was a time not long ago that certain magazines which contained women undressed etc, would only be found on the top shelf in a shop. Now, virtually every magazine has this element to them. The total satuation of such content has, in a way, brainwashed the masses into thinking thats what beauty is. That ideal permeates so many women, both young and old. And to achieve it, - cont.
cont - lots of women undergo surgery, fake tanning, and even suffer eating disorders. The fact is, in my opinion and like what was said earlier, true beauty is achieved in mumerous ways. And are achievable by all, without resorting to such measures. It would be wonderful if we could back to a certain aesthetic in how one dressed and behaved. I would even argue that how one dresses affects a) how they behave, and b) how others perceive them.
As wonderful as the different phases of the 20th century were, there is always a special place in my heart for the early 1900's and 1910's.

Best of times if you were white and rich.
A black like me would be a scarred back slave.

@kennethj1956 Then it is a good thing that this video is not about black slaves. :)

Beautiful video. I believe woman should dress and act like a woman, be feminine, and natural. I believe that is missing sadly.

almost breathtaking! What clear and detailed photography. Must have been the best at that time.

society has come far since this era, but a part of that which should have been kept is gone. Shame. Proper beauty is hard to find now
