This s a very old traditional form of puppetry in Japan, though it was never as common as Bunraku style puppetry. It is not Bunraku, but it isn't some cheap street puppet. The carving of these puppets is of similar qualifty to that of the more familiar Bunraku or Ningyo Joruri puppets in Japan.
Great performer. I have seen him live several times in Japan. He has more puppets and all are fantastic. (any video of those?) But, this style of puppetry in not Bunraku. The kind of puppetry in the video is called "ito ayatsuri ningyou."
