  • For me it is al-fee-na :)= This is my next hub. I ve never been disapointed. First I drove and still drive the Nexus Inter 7, then on my daily driver I use Nexus Premium SG R36 (almost identical to Alfine 8). For my MTB I still use XT 9 Speed but my Cruiser and Trekking BIke (daily driver) run very well with the internal hubs. Rohloff (1k€) would be overkill and we have to many bicycle thefts in our cities. I am very happy with the 2x8 Nexus but I would love to have a chain glider -> Alfine 11!

  • so is it al-fine or al-feenee?

  • Just picked up my Charge Mixer 11 today - the Alfine 11 is fantastic...shame it took 6 months for the bike to arrive. Worth the wait, though!

  • oh how silly of me, derailleurs are better as they get bashed, wear quickly and the chain takes the impression of the most used gears so wears out faster through the range. not forgetting the virtue of duplicate ratios. very efficient!

  • @bassistmatt My derailleurs never been 'bashed', it doesn't wear quickly (define 'quickly' and then work out the actual costs of derailleurs versus hub gears...), "the chain takes the impression of the most used gears so wears out faster through the range" - huh? Duplicate ratios aren't a problem, because people don't need to have a 2% increase in their gears, do you?

  • Anyone know of any bikes that use the Alfine 11 besides the Brodie Once?

  • The Alfine 8-gear on my Cube Hooper is a acceleration-killer in the Stockholm city-traffic, pure satisfaction. On this bike I've put a Nexus wrist-handling instead of original, which makes it possible to gear-shift for example directly 1 to 3 instead of using also the 2-speed. Love it! Supose the new 11 speed will be better in the steepy place but no change on flatroad or downhill? Something like Rohloff, but much lower weight and faster?

  • Got one. Feels nice. Annoying process for removing the wheel for flats though.

  • From what i've heard of the alfine-8, I can't imagine how it could be popular in mountain biking in the UK. Unless mountain biking is wicked lame in the UK and thats why you guys are so into trials? But I hear the alfine-11 is a totally new design, basically built the same as the rohloff. I'm excited to get rid of derailers. Not thrilled about the decreased gear range i'm going to have but, i'll adjust.

  • @l008comm I guess you've never done mountain biking in the winter and in snow. Gear cables soon seize up. So it's singlespeed or hub gears.

  • Wish I'd never heard of alfine. More hassle than they're worth!!

  • what will the gear ratios be compared to 8 speed (0.53, 0.64, 0.75, 0.85, 1, 1.22, 1.42 and 1.62. With a 20-tooth sprocket on hub, this approximately imitates the gears on a 12-38-tooth cassette.)
