There may have been sexual and graphic songs but the lyrics weren't straight in your face like it is now. It was overall more intelligently done and more cryptic at times. No comparison. Today's popular music is not only dumb down, but as comic13 states above, there were many layers of the instruments which could be appreciated and the melodies were more tastefully put together. Also, there were solos or instrumental brakes which you don't hear anymore. Man, I miss that!
